PhilM reacted to Canuck21 in Very Odd CMRT Issue
Hey thanks for this @PhilM! Interesting it's happening on other games as well. For me, it's just the one as far as I can tell. I'll let John know. He hadn't noticed that before, but it's not surprising since it doesn't cause any issues with running the game. I don't think it's worth his time to go chasing this all over the place as long as the games do work. Really appreciate you getting back to me on this. Thanks!

Yep, Mac user here and I see this too ....
Puzzled me greatly, but I just gave up trying to sort / remove the - apparent - layers of duplications!
The only thing I'd add (don't think I see it in your post?) is that the highest level "Game Files" folder has a "shortcut arrow" format ... is it somehow re-replicating itself continuously in the nested folders?
You are not going mad! Or, we both are ...?

P.s. ... happens to me with CMFI also, and Black Sea , Normandy.
iMac, Big Sur 11.2.3 , but this has been present for some while now; not sure when it began for me.

It may not be what we'd hoped for, but then I wanted to remain a European - always have been and always will be 😉.  Oh no, now I'll be in trouble with the off-topic police...

FWIW, I continue to hope that the somewhat slow release schedule is partly because CM3 is being worked on as we speak ...
I admit to thinking sometimes that the balance of work / "issues" on CM2 is a little off - I guess mainly because of the decisions taken many moons ago over the structure of CM2.
For example: there are (almost) infinite pains taken to get new release TOE / ammunition load-outs etc right (which is good, of course), but we still have to accept (rather too often for my taste) AP shells exploding harmlessly, repeatedly, on a tree sitting exactly in front of the aiming-point centre of mass of a target AFV.
I guess that the latter is difficult / impossible to address because of the way the CM2 engine works: but I'd sooner see a solution to that than addressing the correct shoulder patches on the uniforms of *insert nation here* troops in an expansion package.
    Or am I being unfair?

+1.  I also use this in similar ways especially for high value targets.
I'll often have a vehicle for each platoon (jeep, kubelwagon, etc.) on permanent Pause next to the HQ building.  Then I'll plot out the attack axis to be taken by each platoon.  I use the reverse command since the green line is easy to spot among the mostly yellow lines of a platoon's fire teams.  Then the platoons follow the assigned axis of advance.  I use a house rule that the axis can be changed after the scenario start but it costs five minutes (probably to fast for RL) to issue an updated axis of advance.  Then just drag the waypoints to the new axis.
I also have a HQ team assigned to call for fire on TRPs.  The team is at the HQ on permanent Pause.  A waypoint is placed on each TRP with a 50 meters circular target arc.  This shows both the location and plotting area of the TRPs.
Waypoints & their lines with permanent Pause can be used for many interesting things.

This imbalance during the ever increasing attempts to sim "realism" is something that has become more obvious as time passes.  Yes, it's wonderful that every rivet on a tank or uniform items for "July 1944" are accurate.  But, we also have other longstanding issues that are quite major that BF is unable to solve eg: troops panicking in "unrealistic" directions, weird LOS phenomena, pathing issues, and other items that we're not sure are bugs or simple eccentricities of the engine.
One gets the feeling that the CM2 game engine has gotten so complex/unwieldy that solving one issue often gives rise to some other problem.  I recall the frustration re CM1 becoming problematic which led to the development of CM2.  Am wondering if CM2 is now headed in that same direction and may be becoming too cumbersome for its own good.
I note that after all these years of CM2 development I am unable to get any CM2 game to run on my brand new vanilla Win 10 machine.  Installation issues should have been solved many years ago.  Really hope that CM3 is on the horizon.

One "fix" - to my mind - that I've mentioned over the years and seems to me (well, it would, wouldn't it!) to be easier to implement is to be able to select a unit and its movement waypoint(s) as plotted by you and then hit a command to "force' the pathing algorithm to run and show you the route and waypoints that will actually be plotted by the A.I. for that unit only ...

If it shows that the unit will actually take a path that's different to what you want / expect, you can "think again" ...

As the intended route will only be based on what the unit already knows before the turn starts (and before it reacts during the turn to enemy fire), it doesn't seem to contradict FOW?

And its using only the pathing routine that will run when you hit go ... so requires no new features as such; and is voluntary and for use as you decide or not, so will slow down moves only as much as you let it?

Cures AFVs thinking they won't fit through gaps in buildings, impassable terrain, etc and going the long way around via LOS to the enemy? And building entrances, like this?

Unless the pathing routine won't work in a "preview" mode like that?

Not really different than the climate change debate. We have known for decades it is a reality.  TheN big oil started flooding lobbyist and politician pockets with cash and the denial movement kicked off. Denial was never about science but rather corporate interest.

the current problem is based in the whole “fake news” phenomena which again is nothing more than propaganda to be able to deflect. It has inevitably taken on a life of its own in that folks now live in their own bubble where “belief” trumps research.  While it is mostly something that many view as a Trump/conservative supporter issue  (in large part based on climate debate) I personally think you can’t paint it quite that way.  I think we all tend to bias these days.

as to the snowflake expression. I really detest it.  Part of what defines us as human is empathy and the use of that expression by any side seems to be the very denial of the best part of our human selves.

yeah CM email is sensitive to a number of factors in file naming.  Best to create a really simple name for the game save that is recognizable but has no special characters, is short etc.
