  1. Thanks very much for the responses. This game is really cool! MOS:96B2P, I notice your C2 icon is an antenna vice a radio. Is this a mod? The ony thing as good as this game are the folks here at the forum. Cheers all
  2. Yes, IanL, there is green radio status in the Damage panel whether or not the company commander is atop the tank. If the commander is off the tank, the C2 radio icon on both the tank and the commander disappear. The Special Equipment panel never shows a radio for either unit, whether or not the commander is riding. The tank's Special Equipment panel does show binocs, so I'd assume there'd be a radio icon, too, if the tank had one. Curiouser and curiouser. When my Mortar Battery HQ — which also doesn't have a radio — climbs aboard one of the tanks, the same thing happens as with the infantry company commander. What's also strange is the lower echelon 1st Mortar Platoon HQ does have a radio while his immediate superior doesn't. Methinks this is not the way it's supposed to work.
  3. To clarify further, the armor units were individually selected and assigned to the infantry company. Could it be the armor always has radios (even w/o any indicator in the Special Equipment panel), but can only have a C2 link if there's a sufficiently senior commander to use it?
  4. Newbie question (I did search first). In a Quick Battle setup I noticed the following: In deploying a Soviet infantry company commander, two T-34-85's, and two SU-85's (all w/o a radio icon in the Special Equipment panel), a radio icon suddenly appears in the C2 panel when I place the company commander on one of the armor units. What's up? TIA for any response.
  5. Jyri, agree. I didn't expect an easy time overall; there was mention of a counterattack and my first thought was to grab objectives and good defensible positions ASAP. That was a really bad thought!
  6. To any newbies to CMRT, like me: Beware! The Angriff briefing is a head fake. "We can expect logistics elements and rear guard units so this should be a walk in." Really! I quickly closed my eyes and quit the scenario 30 seconds into it after losing half my light armor. So much for tacintel. I'll now try again; this time more prudently.
  7. Interesting scenario. I touched The Cutting and assaulted the Ganger's Hut, then ran my guys back down the tracks and exited for a tactical victory. Unfortunately, one lone soldier — part of a squad that had already exited — wouldn't move from the hut; I could select him, but he was unresponsive to any commands. Hate to leave a guy behind! The scenario didn't end, probably because of the straggler, until I "ceased fire."
  8. It's happened a couple of times in two different scenarios, most recently in Vierville. All the appropriate green lines were in place among the target, spotter, and mortar, but the mortar never fires. A close inspection of the mortar unit reveals the gunner going through his motions over and over and over ... to no effect. Could it be me mortar unit is too close to a building that's giving it cover? TIA
  9. Can the Open Up command be applied to a waypoint? I'm playing Task Force Raff and it seems the command only takes effect immediately. TIA
  10. WRT mods, I put the swastika mod on the German vehicles in CMBB and it did NOT prevent these from being whacked by German CAS. I don't know if BFC has fixed this problem in CMBN.
  11. I'm new to CMx2 also. A word of warning, though. I played the Bois de Baugin scenario for such a long time yesterday that my eyes are literally burning this morning. Take breaks, use Visine. Welcome aboard and cheers.
  12. The Panther did the same in my run through of that scenario, and judging by your screenshot, we took the same approach. The tank probably doesn't know what to do but hide if the Yanks don't come directly down the road. (I play on Iron.)
  13. Is there a way to blast a hole in boccage (or a wall) without having the engineers/pioneers actually go through it (and usually into a hail of lead)? TIA
  14. The Manual notes one difference between Skill Levels Elite and Iron: Friendly units need to be spotted just like enemy units. If you have a friendly unit not in line of sight or in contact with another friendly unit, then the only way to find this unit is by either re-establishing contact with another friendly unit or by clicking through the chain of command in the game interface, jumping from unit to unit. While friendly units may not be spotted when the player has a particular unit selected, all friendly units are visible when no unit is selected. Is there something else going on that makes Iron a step up in difficulty? Something with the Tac AI, perhaps? TIA for responses.
  15. Thanks, guys. BFC it is. I given Apple enough $$$ this month anyway.
  16. MikeyD, it's mentioned on BFC's CMBN "news" page, where there's also a link to the App Store. It also notes that CF isn't yet available via that channel.
  17. Thanks again for all the responses. My new laptop arrived yesterday and it now appears I may not have to have a dual boot system to use some key software (it seems to run well under a Citrix plug-in). This will likely save me a few bucks on Windows and an external CD/DVD drive. I downloaded the Mac demo, but haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet. I expect it'll work okay, so my question then becomes: Should buy directly from BFC or via the Mac App Store? I suspect the former, but all thoughts welcome. Cheers
  18. Doug, agree, with Jobs gone Apple has lost a driving force. Nevertheless, from a tech design standpoint I think Ive (Sir Jonathan to the likes of us ) will continue to perform. And Tim Cook knows his business. One of Apple's greatest skills as a money machine is it's ability to monetize practically everything. Make it simple to use, integrate all your products, and channel your customers to your stores. This business model probably doesn't work all that well with grognard wargamer types like us, but we're not the target market. It sure works for my sweetie, who just can't do without her MacBook, iPhone, and iPad. Is AAPL worth $574/sh? Couldn't say, but the PE is only 14 and many think that's reasonable. Can its money printing press continue to roll, probably. In my view it can roll a lot longer than Facebook's, but then I don't own either of these puppies.
  19. Michael E, what's particularly confounding about Apple's early strategy is it also targeted the education market, but didn't consider the potential of students' (i.e., young people's) gaming interests. I suspect that particular myopia was a Job's thing. Doug W, ha! I hear you wrt "happy wife, happy life." That's exactly what I was thinking when I said DIY tech support at home. I'm about 60/40 play/serious, but some of the serious stuff is either Windows only or heavy Java/Flash, which Apple doesn't seem to accommodate all that well (another Job's thing). If CMBN works well over OS X, then I may try Parallels or Fusion for the Windows stuff. I know what a pain it is to have to reboot and I'd like to avoid it, but at least it should be quicker with the MacBook's SSD. PaulMG, I've been wargaming on and off since the 1950's (started with dice, a ruler, wooden blocks, and Napoleonic lead). By the age of computers, I was a bit of a grognard and never had an interest in the games developed for or ported to the early Apples.
  20. When I retired in '06 and lost access to an IT crew I switched to Mac to minimize DIY tech support at home. In January '10, I bought a high-end 17" Dell laptop (we'd always had Dells at work with good results) to expand my gaming choices (CMx1 being a target). The build quality of the Dell was horrible and the Windows load out didn't work properly. Contact with Dell's call center in India was very frustrating, ending with a request for an RMA when I was told the OS difficulty I was having was a "known problem" with which I was going to have to live. So now I'm an Apple fanboi. Youse guys' responses are most appreciated.
  21. Thank you all very much for the feedback. I'll certainly try the demos and see if there's a discernible difference. Keeping in mind stikkypixie's mention of the demo missions' small size and sfhand's recollection about getting full use out of my RAM, the tests may not be definitive, but I'm sure they'll be fun. MikeyD/Pak40, I need to run Windows on the Mac anyway in order to use some essential Widows-only apps. I've had a dual-boot Mac before (I think with Vista) and seem to remember you could use a memory stick to enhance Windows performance. Do you know offhand if that also works with Windows 7? Michael E/Doug W, Macs are indeed all over the tube. I suspect paid product placement, but it may be those artsy types just like good design. Again, thanks.
