  1. @ Steiner14, I am inclined to agree with you whenever the Wehrmacht engaged another Geneva Convention signatory. But as the USSR (and the Japanese in the Pacific War) did not abide the Geneva Conventions, I am under the impression that greater savagery existing on those fronts. That might also align with your observations about current NATO operations against Jihadi extremists. On the other hand, I wonder how much such complaints of "exploding bullets" might derive from communist wartime propaganda, a making of excuses for poor Russian performance against the Wehrmacht, a mystification of superior German munitions by ill trained peasants, or some combination from all of the above. History is replete with honest error and dishonest exaggeration.
  2. @CM1fan - maybe this will help. I don't know that I play well at all. I'm only willing to go up against the AI at this point after 9 months playing CM:BfN with no experience ever playing an CM games before. However, I got better when I slowed down and took more time advancing into contact and learning to look before I leaped. The Armchair General advises to never be in a hurry to die. Sound advice. I play WEGO. When I took the advice to learn OCOKA (Observation, Cover and Concealment, Obstacles, Key Terrain, Avenues of Approach) as the keys to battlefield terrain and got to understand C2 somewhat, things started to click better. It also helped to stick with the smaller battles commanding the more straightforward troop types. I firmly believe that RECON and ARTY are worth the wait because they are a pixeltruppen's best friends!! It was work but a kind of work I was willing to do and laugh at myself for instances of remarkable stupidity. These forums really helped. My thanks to all ya'll who hang out here. Good luck and good gaming!
  3. To be envied then, for having so many more years of great gaming in front of you than behind you, and, like PARA, spending them in very good company here!
  4. Agreed. I learned it put this way, "Tis a poor general who seeks a fair fight." @JasonC - Great post. Thank you.

  6. Check that only Mods go into "Z" folider in "Data" directory. Battle scenarios go into "Scenarios" folder in "Game Files" directory. Campaign scenarios go into "Campaigns" folder in "Game Files" directory. The "readme" files with most mods explain which folders to load with what files. Also make sure you quit / end the game completely and clear game cache memory before loading mods. Most mods don't take until you restart the game. Easy mistake to make when multi-tasking (as in I learned from my own experience). Try this template for Windows "Battle Front" folder - Combat Missiong Battle for Normandy - - Data - - - - Z - - - - - - - loaded vehicles, voices, terrain, uniforms, UI tweaks, etc. (sound & graphics mods) - - Game Files - - - - Campaigns - - - - - - loaded campaign scenario mods - - - - Incoming Email - - - - Outgoing Email - - - - Quick Battel Maps - - - - Saved Games - - - - Scenarios - - - - - - loaded battle scenario mods EDIT - Unless you're a Newbie, you likely already know this. Sorry if this came off condescending. Just saw that Amreveille might be 2.0 only but it was posted to repository on 10-Dec-12, one day before v2.0 came out . Someone else would need to confirm whether version matters or if incompatibile to v1.10 / v1.11.
  7. My thinking is that these men and women of Durning's generation, as children of the depression who matured in the crucible of war and holocaust, came home from that horrible conflict and worked very hard to insure all the benefits of peace and the blessings tranquility for their own children which they themselves never knew. They succeeded remarkably. It seems their children and my peers never really appreciated it. In may ways we couldn't. Chalk it up to human ignorance and inexperience. CMBfN is a tool I use to make up for some of that as well as a form of entertainment. I don't know that I achieve a lower casualty rate. Although I try and curse myself often for taking casualties when greater care would have prevented their loss. (On the other hand, over-caution was Montgomery's achilles heal as a commander and it impaired his judgement in Normandy, particularly in his lack of leadership speed and fortitude seizing Caen.) CM is the game which helps me better realize the accomplishments of our father's fathers. May Charles Durning now rest in peace with those comrades. Bless them all.
  8. There's "Lt. Smash's Floating Icons for CMBN and CW" at URL = http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=314&func=fileinfo&id=1792 They use symbols instead of silhouettes. What you seek may not be in the BF repository but rather somewhere else like GreenAsJade at URL = http://cmmods.greenasjade.net/mods Let us know when you find what you're looking for.
  9. Is this the one? "Juju's floating icons v2.0" at http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=314&func=fileinfo&id=2481 & "Juju's floating icons" at http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=314&func=fileinfo&id=1916
  10. Ja, gewiss, und Ihnen. Danke sehr. Merry Christmas to all indeed.
  11. Got it. "Alternate Silhouettes and Weapons" by Marco Bergman. Thank you!
  12. @ Mord & @Phil, Can't seem to find Marco's interface in BF Repository. Where should I look? What is that file name? Thank you.
  13. Bestowed by Swiss emigre's settling in America. It's in Europe. Glarus is the capital of the Canton of Glarus in Switzerland I'm not Swiss and can't speak to the details. They brew a damn fine beer, though.
  14. New Glarus Brewing Company; New Glarus, Wisconsin http://www.newglarusbrewing.com/ Really, really good bottled beers. Caps do NOT twist off so you will have to buy that $20 bottle opener . . . .
  15. From Battlefron.com "Combat Mission Battle for Normandy - Feature List" http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1745&Itemid=517 [COMMANDS] New Scout Team Command sections off 2 men, favoring automatic weapons, to act as scouts New Driver Team Command allows large passenger units to leave behind one or two Soldiers to drive and/or man the weapon of a transport vehicle (such as a halftrack) Hence my thinking in earlier posts that Juju's tweaked AI is not compatible because it hasn't accounted for these new command buttons yet. Where can I reference those conventions? Be advised, I've not yet learned or performed the "rez-explode" tasks which you and the more experienced players / modders know how to do. So, I'm looking more for a readme type instruction set that tells me "rename 'A' to 'X' in my Z-folder".
  16. Okay. It seems then that game play itself, or game outcomes, don't differ much between versions. I wasn't sure whether play balance might have been much affected by movable waypoints, the new scout and driver commands, target armor arc, target briefly, or canister rounds. Truth be told, its really ez's patched uniform mods which I want to keep playing. I like to see pixeltruppen who match Mord's portraits and the briefing OOB. As I understand it, v2.0 doesn't support these patched uniforms mods. Thanks for feedback.

  18. General question to those whom care. Given the differing flavors of CMBN distributed amongst us, how important is patch & version information when posting AAR's? Do scenario battles play differently between v1.01/v1.11 and v2.0? I'm currently running v1.11 and will likely stay there until some of the graphical mods (like Juju's Tweaked AI, Mord&CN's Unit Portraits, Veins Tracers) become v2.0 compatible. I still intend to post AARs of modder scenarios developed but am not sure whether or how versions might differ. (Specifically, I just finished "Dusty Roads 2.0" and owe the developer an AAR posting for his updated scenario). So, for those of you with any opinions, does versioning matter to any of ya'll in this matter? If so, how? My intent is to make AARs as useful as possible for others when deciding whether to play them. Suggestions welcome. I'll apply such feedback as best I can. Good luck and good gaming!
  19. Wow, Shakespearean wargaming . . . . Much ado about nothing. The lady doth protest too much, methinks. (I concur that the four horsemen gif is just way too cool, though . . . Thank you for that!) Whatever CMBN patch or version you play, good luck and good gaming!
  20. Alludes to the English proverb, "People who live in glass houses should not throw stones." One meaning is that a person with faults of his own would be wise to avoid taking offense from or delighting in the faults of others.
  21. I mostly think of CMx2 as a kind of company-grade level "Steel Panthers" (which I never mastered) re-done as a 3D simulation. I find it a very robust computer transformation of map & counter wargames like Squad Leader / ASL / Close Assault. As others have said, download the demo and see for yourself. Give yourself 1-3 months of demo play if you really want to understand CMx2 mechanics before actually purchasing the game(s). Hope you enjoy. Good luck and good gaming.
  22. Am using the following mods in V1.10. Removed them to install V1.11. Then re-created the Z-folder and applied them all after running a quick test without any of them. They all seem to work after applying v1.11 but only tested using "A Ranger Squad gets a tall Order" scenario. Then I reloaded a saved game for "Dusty Roads 2.0" and resumed play briefly. So far, so good, but I've only played 3 WEGO turns since upgrading. 24. Its always nice to read these kinds of comments. This mod is prominent on my to-do list; just haven't been able to get to it yet. I certainly look forward to doing so. Thank you, modders!
