  1. I only reload when catastrophe strikes and it is clear I do not have a reasonable chance of accomplishing my objectives. Most of the time I learn at this point that I have made an error in judgement accounting for the issue. It is a learning curve. This is what keeps me coming back. My point was that the casualty rate SEEMS at times to be extraordinarily high in situations where units would be taking cover. I am not an expert and I do not wish to make my casualty aversion an issue about the game design. It is what it is and I love Combat Mission. I appreciate your comments,
  2. The thrust of the post, in the beginning, was a concern about time constraints and how "unrealistic" they seem to be. The thread has morphed into thoughts on scenario design. I am less concerned about the time constraint issue and I have no issues with scenario design. I have found few with major issues FOR ME. I may have problems with a scenario but it inevitably turns out that the problems are mine alone and not due to the scenario at all. I am in awe of the time and effort it takes to design a scenario for combat mission and thankful for those that create them. However, I am horrified how bloody battles are in the game. Whole squads wiped out in a burst of fire. Early on there was mention of how time limits often lead to high casualties as players rush to complete the scenario using brute force. I agree and am neurotically casualty aversive. I will do anything I can to avoid unnecessary loss. This usually means recon by endeavor. I start out with a plan and if it goes south and the casualties mount, I start over. I accept I have cheated by learning enemy dispositions by encounter but in the process usually discover that I have erred in choosing my approach and method. I would love to have a less bloody battlefield and imagine a better game world where squads hit the dirt with each incoming burst of fire to avoid becoming mincemeat. It would mean more going to ground and defilade and immobilization and less gore but it is only a game and it is what it is. I would like to see a thread about the casualty dimension of the game but I will bet it has been discussed to extinction. In the end, it is a game (/simulation) and the 'rules' (game design) are the ultimate constraint. Remember scenario designers have the same constraint.
  3. Just invested 150 + hours finally in CMANO over the past couple of months while I had some free time but ultimately decided to put it aside and switch back to Combat Mission as my main focus. Had a lot of fun. It does have a steep learning curve and it is indeed Harpoon on steroids and well worth the investment in time and money. It does involve intense micromanagement and the frustration involved finally overwhelmed me. It is probably my lack of skill and dedication. I may return if the proposed strike planner ever materializes. We are living in another golden age of combat simulations. Armored Brigade from Matrix is on the horizon too but I am a sucker for Shock Force!
  4. Installed CMBN and cannot find where the program is installed to access it. I can find CMRT and CMFB in Program Files (x86) but cannot find CMBN. Thanks,
  5. Very helpful thanks. I have upgrade 3 for CMBN. Will follow directions.
  6. Have no Combat Mission titles installed but I have purchased CMBN, CMRT, CMFB and CMBS. I will be getting the bundle 4 upgrade package. Do I need to install older versions first? From reading here in this forum I think I should be able to install all version 4 titles from the bundle pack without having to install older versions first. is this correct? Thanks,
  7. Do not want to hijack this thread but there seems to be two issues interwoven here. One is a concern about bunching and the other is about the lethality of combat in CM. I have been astounded and even put off by how bloody close combat can be in the game and have had to fight the impulse to blame the game for the carnage. The amount of effort it takes to protect my troops which I consider a priority has led to a very deliberate and stealthy method of approach to arrange the sudden delivery of overwhelming fire superiority on the enemy. The amount of effort this takes always amazes me and the tension created is often unbearable. I have been playing off and on for years and in reading this discussion I finally realized how this is really an expression of how successful the designers have been in creating such a great game. If this makes me a fanboy so be it.
  8. Loud applause. You captured the dialogue perfect! A slight tip of the helmet from behind and a wink...
  9. Agree completely. Worked last night and couldn't get home 'till today. Downloaded without incident and installed. Absolutely loved CMSF. Can't wait. My dilemma: just got started on Beutezug in CMRT and am determined to work through RT but there is CMBS beckoning me onto the rocks. Yikes! So quality stuff, so little time. Thanks, Battle Front.
  10. So, do I have to install the original (version 2.0) of the game first after purchase of the 3.0 upgrade or can I just install it from the new 3.0 upgrade all by itself?
  11. Hotkey customizing didn't work for me when trying to assign reverse view to "V" key. None of the view keys work for me. Noticed first when I couldn't get "V" to reverse view or use "WADSQE" to work. Love the RTS set though. Right click to select menu is great.
  12. Thanks all. Very helpful. What I have found out is that I have to be careful about being too cautious and sparing of casualties. You can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs. In order to bring overwhelming firepower to bear I must accept losses. I can still be careful but I need mass firepower or risk being defeated in detail. It has been a hard lesson for me to learn given my nature. I'm just glad the lives lost are silicon ones.
  13. I would like to know other gamer's ideas about a topic that recurrently gets to me while gaming. Had a couple of days off and reinstalled CMBN after having to re-format my hard drive a while ago. I was fooling around in the Roadblock scenario a bit to get my feet wet again. I recall being able to take the farm objective relatively easily and bloodlessly after a mortar artillery prep before but this time my assaulting platoons took horrific casualties assaulting through the gap in the hedgerow causing me to fall back to another method, a brute force solution to the problem. It occured to me then how quickly things can go bad and how bad things can be. Two platoons were wiped out virtually in a minute due to my stupidity. Then I went on to Barkmann's Corner and was again amazed at the power of a well-sited Panther. Technology can indeed trump numbers. However the AI responded with an end-run around my left flank and a marauding pair of half-tracks turned the corner and hosed my infantry caught at the base of another hedgerow. The losses were again horrific. I managed to swing the Panther around and clean up the situation and came out with a victory, of course, but again I started thinking about the casualty rates from battles like these. Now, I know nothing specific about the kind of casualty figures resulting from battles in Normandy. That kind of information is hard to find. But I bet those at Battlefront do and veteran gamers might. I do know that battles on the Eastern Front were fought to the death and the casualty rates must have been very high. Again I know nothing specific but my reading has told me that at the front line there no mercy was shown. I know that a rough figure of overall casualty rate of about 10% is standard (killed, wounded, MIA) but this must reflect a denominator of a lot of non-combatant troops. Does anybody have any information about how bloody the battles in Normandy were for the GI's on the front line? I would imagine Battlefront and Combat Mission gets it right. I am not making any criticism of a fine game at all. I am just trying to get my head around some very bloody figures. Was it really this bad? Thanks,
  14. How much do the system requirements differ for CM v2.0 to v3.0? Have CPU speed slightly below suggested but a whoppingly huge GPU. I know I can wait to check out the demo but might like to preorder. Thanks,
  15. Thanks for the help. Installed the 1.32 patch again making sure to check both & no joy. Still doesn't recognize the Marines module. Uninstall & reinstall from scratch? From the bundle setup or original CMSF then Marines from disc?
  16. Installed CMSF with Marines from CMSF_Marines_Bundle_Setup exe file in April, 2011. My CMSF now shows version 1.32 but the Marine module is missing (it was present before for sure). I run avg but turn off resident shield when installing. I have saved the original setup exe file & I have backup copies (unopened) of CMSF & the Marines module. Suggestions, please. Do I need to do a complete & fresh re-install or can I try to install the Marines module into 1.32 CMSF? What is this going to do to my activation limits? Thanks in advance.
  17. Just into the fire part of the tutorial... Wow!!! I don't know what happened but the view controls work so much better & are much easier to use. Fantastic immersion & great game already!:D:D
  18. Brand new iMac with os x 10.6.7 & 3.06 ghz intel core i3 + 4 gb. Downloaded demo from gamershell without a problem. The splash screen comes up but the application (demo) will not launch -> freeze requiring force quit. The shortcuts on the splash also don't work. Can open the manual from a window but not the shortcut. Hmm... I re-booted after install when it wouldn't open & no joy.
  19. Thanks all. Very helpful. Wolfseven, I worked in La Mesa for 20 years. Lived in Bonita & Tierra Santa.
  20. New to CM:SF. Enjoying it a bunch. Played original CM series a lot but fell away. Now looking forward to Normandy but bought CM:SF as intro & liking the game on its own. Color me re-converted. Question: what is the difference between the Assault Command in the Move Commands & the Assault Team Command in Administrative Commands? A good example showing how to use each would be appreciated. I am not sure after reading the manual how the 2 commands differ. Thanks,
  21. I recall back in the CMBO days posting about hedgerow busting & how Shermans would bust through the hedgerow & plaster the corners with willie pete to take out the German machine guns. Combat Mission & I have come a long way since. Just purchased CM:SF & I am very impressed. I am really looking forward to the Normandy release. I play on a pc but my wife just got a new iMac. Deciding if I will play on the pc or the mac or both. It is very good to be back.
