  1. When did these fall out of favor? Or is anyone able to tell me that they are still allowed on modern dress uniforms. They lend a quiet elegance to a military uniform next to the highway bill boards literally mounted on peoples chest on today's uniform. Those THINGS just don't drape well on a persons chest. I know when I was in the USAF in early 80's they allowed embroidered specialty badges and ranks before we changed over to the bus driver uniforms-that is my only encounter of everyday military uniforms with embroidery. Photos of General Doolittle, Field Marshal Alan-Brooke and General Eisenhower to illustrate my point on ribbons. Okay they are Generals-but I have seen pictures of enlisted with these sort of medals.
  2. I'm back from travel and I hope to have it uploaded by Sunday. We just need to have the readmes/icon key reference finetuned
  3. amidali:

The mod is ready for release. Except-We (CMFDR and myself) need the small icon reference and readme translated into Italian. We want a readme and icon key in English, French and Italian.

Would you be able to do it? I have it in a small zip file and I can send you the link to download. The documents are not very big.

  4. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4WdULP5kioDVE1keWN0c2lTcTg/view?usp=sharing

Here you go-readme. Please proof and translate. One will remain TEXT one with the icons will be pdf'd. Like to have one in English, French, Italian.

  5. I'm back. Tired. I'll upload a reference card I intend to include for your review. Intend to upload everything Sunday to Jade.

Will be icons, readme and reference key.

  6. We certainly will upload to Greensajade. However, I want to include a small pdf readme that matches the in game icons with thumbnail actual screen captures from Italian Army docs. I foresee maybe 2 or 3 weeks. It would be sooner but I'm without real computer resources/utilities to do that while on travel. I already cleaned up/fixed the HQ's icon that has an uneven blur on one side.
  7. Had to rename one file with the wrong name. It was a BLUE HQs Icon misidentified as RED. Corrected file can be found in corrected mod. Ignore the link in first post. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4WdULP5kioDX2I3NU82WldwZkE/view?usp=sharing
  8. Sorry for the format of the above post. Not easy when posting thoughts, link and mult-screenshots.
  9. I want to thank CMFDR –this mod would not be able to be accomplished without source material provided and suggestions given. Also again want to thank amidali who helped with the translations. The link to the BETA Royal Italian Army Icons is here. PLEASE read the short README! https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4WdULP5kioDZ0ZLT1BiT2VuUDA/view?usp=sharing As I stated in another post: “Nearly Everyone either fudges it with NATO/Wehrmacht or small pictures. Not CMFDR/Tempestzzzz. So this is a first. The real deal-Royal Italian Army Tactical Map Symbols! And we're pretty proud of that. It may be a little jarring for the eye when you see it first on your screen because all of us have been raised on NATO and Wehrmacht Tactical Signs. You may go back to that-but at least your horizons were broadened. Right? I should add we have quite a few historical resources to draw on-but every icon used won't be present since there are some units Not in the Royal Italian Army depicted in FI/Gustav Line (i.e. SNIPERS and ANTITANK infantry units (like Bazooka and Panzershreck). Certainly no Heavy or Medium Tanks. “ Below is some screenshots in what it looked on my computer. The first screenshot show Regular Force Italian Icons with Lozenge shape. The second screenshot shows Round Shape. You choose which ones you want. The screenshot with green round icons is what you use with the Italians playing as BLUE force." The icon selection will be expanded if future modules should they have more Italian Unit specialties. Currently the icons we are using are only Royal Italian Army units in Fortress Italy and Gustav Line game. Also, the final release will be in BRZ format and a key to the signs. The future Non BETA release will also include a tactical sign reference an actual screenshot of the Royal Italian Army actual icon depicted from a source document. CMFDR and I don't want you to think we made these icons up. Hope you enjoy. Please leave comments and suggestions. I’m on travel for 2 weeks but will monitor from iPad. CMFDR can also answer your queries to. If it appears this is a big production for a small mod-let me just say-researching a few of these icons wasn't easy. Not a whole lot on the INTERNET. The work felt like a Big Production. Italian Round HQ's icon here (optional use-MOD-TAGGED [HQ's icon very similar to infantry unit icon [as in real life]) The Regular Units are Lozenge shape in this screen shot-But Round shape Regular Units look the same as HQ round icon. Regular Unit Icons- Lozenge Shape Italian BLUE Force Icons-Round shape only.
  10. We getting close to posting a BETA for people to comment/ critique on and put in their Z Folder to use. Download link we be posted here in MODS. Final product at GreenJades site. CMFDR and myself had quite a lot of background exchanges on this. And amidali helped with the translations. This isn't a Juju Mod-But from at least my own travels on the INTERNETS this is the ONLY Royal Italian Army Icon/map symbols/tactical signs I have seen anywhere in any paper board game or computer game. I could be wrong-but I didn't see any. And believe me-I LOOKED! Nearly Everyone either fudges it with NATO/Wehrmacht or small pictures. Certainly no Heavy or Medium Tanks. Bit of a sample for Tankettes for Red Forces. Yeah Blue Forces and Fog of War will have their own icons. You'll just have to wait and see.. One request I have for Battlefront.Com and I hope it's passed on by the Moderator to the Battlefront Powers that Be - Can we have French Military Icons slots said aside for Free French Units depicted in any future Combat Mission modules??? CMFDR and myself well on are way researching that area now and would like to do a mod for that-if French slots are available. We have -uniforms, vehicles, firearms and color schemes depicted for specific countries- Could we please add more foreign country slots to? Please. The US, Germans, British and Russians have their own period WWII slots. Okay 'nuff said there. Yeah CMFDR did a lot of investigating here -but sadly- one EXAMPLE OF ONE MILITARY ICON THAT WILL NOT APPEAR in CM FI/GL Italian Army Mules Google translation - The in-line with mules . My interpretation 'Mules in Formation'.
  11. I do recall reading American ads from that period requesting people donate their binos for the war effort. I have no doubt The Brits needed every binocular they could get their hand on so that any manufacturing of optics could be freed up for other projects.
  12. I found out about GREENFISH ICON utility in a forum string here. If anyone is interested it's here. Freeware http://greenfishsoftware.blogspot.hu/2012/07/greenfish-icon-editor-pro.html YouTube instructions-though I just learned playing with it. Have fun! (That's the point-right? ) https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=greenfish+icon+editor
  13. Taking a break from icon building -bit burned out-but I'll upload a group of 4 icons tonight with their opacity lowered. If the opacity is lowered to 85 from 100 look for a file that says Red Icon-85 in a 7Z zip. I'll PM you when it's done.

Got it. Yeah, I'll love to see more variations in Italian weaponry in Gothic line module. And French troops! Definitely on my shopping list.

Notepad++ and a similar tool to WinMerge (Compare It) are on must have list, among the first tools I put on a fresh Windows install. I might give a try to Greenfish, thanks for the link, it seems to be quite interesting. Even though I'm no artist!

By the way, you know that messages posted on one's profile ain't private, right? ;)

      Cheers mate.

No I didn't know that.

      rod_dickson@hotmail.com

Though I am of the opinion the moment you log on or dial your cell you are hopelessly compromised.

On Greenfish - it's a very simple utility. Layers are a bit different with PaintNet and Paintshop i.e. more work. I found out about the tool in a passing comment in a forum string here. Just play with it. The magic wand is very helpful. I'm sure the French Army had their own tactical signs ! I don't want to use NATO or US icons for French units.

They could use more countries - how hard can it be to put uniforms on the figures?

  14. Sent you a PM. I haven't fixed the FOW icons-they need to match exactly the black ones. Haven't fiddled with them yet. They work they just are slightly different.
  15. Okay it's in my GOOGLE DRIVE.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4WdULP5kioDNlV2UjdwTFgwXzA/view?usp=sharing

    It's Red Icons. 7Z

Just drop it in your Z file.

  16. Yeah I need someone to test the tags. No transparency issues. The screenshot of the desktop shows the transparent areas in black. In game no problem. The icons aren't transparent-I made the lines a little thicker since the last screen shoot. But it is a BETA. No crashes on my machine. Fog of War looks good to. I only have the RED ICONS done. File weights in at 3.5 Megs. I'll upload it to my GOOGLE files later and PM you the url when ready tonight. Can you open 7Zip? Need a break now.
  17. About half way through-tested 2 of them in game and they stand out fine.
  18. CMFDR: Let me think how to do that. BILL: Yes-They have an AT Gun-but no separate unit with a dedicated icon we could find. I'm still looking. At Tobruk the Italians used an assault engineering unit (man below led that unit) with explosives meant to breach defenses - but I didn't read where that some Italian infantry stepped in with some dedicated AT tank handheld weapon or doctrinal use. Albeit I realize this was only one action but they did'nt have 'shrecks or zooks. Americans and Germans were the one with that kind of weapon. And of course the Americans had the bazooka in North Africa-the Germans later developed their rocket. Of course the Italians maybe had some 'sticky grenade' magnetic grenade . Still looking. But I haven't seen anything with a dedicated doctrinal AT roll in combat. But if you have anything to counter that let me know-I'm pulling hair out trying to find info. I believe their is a lot out there-just not on the 'net' Now in the Christmas Bone in FI they talk about later roles for Italians with all kinds of weapons (below). But in the early 1940's ....they are not there yet. Still looking. An Italian Forces Pack that adds a ton of Post-Armistice Italian forces to the Allies and Axis sides. Italian partisans, captured Italian equipment in use by Germans, actual Italian military forces operating under Allied and Axis sides, the works. This would be a pretty big Pack that will completely revolve around the Italians. I'm personally super excited for this pack, it will be a lot of fun to make and play. hehe-written by another Italio-phile hehehe. Bless him. _____________________________________ True warrior, artist, engineer... so much ENGLISH wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paolo_Caccia_Dominioni ITALIAN wiki https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paolo_Caccia_Dominioni ART http://digilander.libero.it/trombealvento/caccia/cacciad.htm Decorated by Rommel-he went back after the war to take care of fallen soldiers and designed a memorial.
  19. See corrected below-red x'd out changes as I understood from your post. OOPS Forgot to x out the winged icon on #27. It's replacement is on it's right.
  20. Thanks Aildali-will do with # 8. When investigating #11 correct icon I didn't realize the Italian Pioneers played such a big part capturing Tobruck. Looks like they used flamethrowers to at Tobruck!! I'll post that link and pdf at a later post tonight. My goal is is only to change the icons that are Italian-keep the colors similar for both German and Italians-only symbol changes. So an HQ icon that both share will have the same color as the nation specific icons. There shouldn't be any conflicts with icons that have the name GERMAN and ITALIAN in the file name. You should have mixed units in the field with no problem (see link below to other posts). FOW icons have are also noted by specific county names to. I could go into say the CM Final Blitzkrieg file explode the icon file for Germans and label the US icon units that are for the GERMAN counterfeit units and give them US icons BECAUSE they have a GERMAN nation specific name in their file name for that US unit. You explode the FLOATING ICON file in FB and you will see this. You can even do that with your icon set Bill-use your US icons for the GERMAN counterfeit US units.. See here my posts and screens in this string. Below is a screen shot from exploded ITALIAN FI icons. The key is the country name in the file name. Tagging should work-this will be tested. Should be obvious with the first BETA Italians have their own FOW icons. Gotta go to work. Hope I answered the interrogatories. If not be back tonight
  21. And I learned a lot today to. 1st Thing. Don't worry Bill-this is only a BRZ file that overwrites the Italian Tactical Symbols that are German right now. The only thing I am using is the color and icon gif shape. So thanks for the permission. Below is a number key list matches the proposed icons in the screenshot. You can figure it out. Before anything is committed to graphics we have to agree on the icons. To that end I have used the manual, your translations (helps with BING and GOOGLE searches) and screen captures and suggestions to produce this key. Look it over, ponder it-ask questions-nothing is written in cement. Everyone one of them is a Gen-U-WINE Royal Italian Tactical sign-circa 1935-1942 - absolutely no NATO or Wehrmacht b.s. The standard here is Grognard. The Green question marks on two of them #1 and #8 I couldn't make up my mind. The Ammo Bearers suggested I think is a dedicated position for supply (cache) not people carrying ammo IMHO. To that end here is the screenshot and the key. Have fun. Like to get a Beta out by May 2nd. If I can't well I can't. My apologies on the Italian spelling-Royal Italian Army Manual pdf isn't clear. I did learn genio has to do with Engineering-but you put Plotono Genio in the translator you get Genius. One other thing the Reconnaissance Vehicles SPA-Viberti AS.42will have to be armored cars with icons-they are not separate like Light Tanks and Tankettes with their own icon. That is just how the game is set up-even though there is an icon for it. Too bad. Anti Tank Team - ????? Anti Tank Gun - cannoni anticarro Flak Gun - NONE Infantry Gun -Sezione cannoni per fanteria o batteria d'accompagnamento Light Mg - fucile mitragliatore Heavy Mg - squadra mitragilieri Mortar - mortaio d'assalto Brixia mod.35 Ammo Bearer - ????? Infantry - pattuglia Reconnaisance - pattuglia di osservazione e collegamento *OR* pattuglia o gruppo di vedette Engineer/Pioneer - plotone genio Sniper - NONE (No sniper for Italians in game !) Forward Observer - osservatorio di artiglieria HQ - SHARED ICON WITH GERMANS CANNOT BE CHANGED Armored Car - autoblindomitragliatrice Half-Track - NONE Light Tank - carro veloce [TANKETTE] AND carro d’assaluto Light Tank Medium Tank - NONE Heavy Tank - NONE SP Gun - Compagnia Semovente 75/18 Tank Destroyer - Compagnia Semovente 47/32 Heavy Truck - autosezione leggera Light Truck - NONE LT Truck Hvy Weapon - NONE LT Truck AT - NONE FOW Infantry - DUPLICATE OF #9 FOW Heavy Gun - squadra mitraglieri controaerei FOW Gun - cannone c. a. FOW Light Tank - DUPLICATE OF #17 FOW HVY/MED Tank - NONE FOW Truck - DUPLICATE OF #22
  22. Geez so much to digest CMDFR -I'll dummy up some kind of sketch for a screen capture on what we got here. Bill is right about the red (Thanks for the comments Ed.). Last night I lost an hour of my life looking for a MEDIUM TRUCK IanL. GEOMETRIC ICONS will be the what we will go with first. I find quite a bit on Italian Army WWII camouflage, rank, insignias and uniforms-but tactical symbols for maps is rare as hens teeth. I wake up this morning look at our combined forum string here with a manual download to download-that started this string and various screen captures and it's safe to say this one BATTELEFRONT FI MOD string has more Italian tactical emblems then anywhere else in one location on the net. PDF this forum string HAHAHA As an aside I went to LOAN SENTRY to first thing. Nothing there. In the interim what this link has here is free and legal to download (download options on the bottom right). Off to work. Period stuff-old school classic stuff. Battle Drill kinda of stuff. https://archive.org/details/FM21-30 https://archive.org/details/TME30-420 I'll register at Supremo Commando tonight and ask. Gotta catch a bus now.
  23. Open the Scenario and give yourself 3 hours. Seriously I played it twice and won (as the US.). If it been 10-15 more minutes it would have been a Total Defeat for me against the AI. Your enemy isn't the MG's-it's the time constraints. And the real enemy is Snow. Running in that crap makes your men Tired faster then anything.
  24. Yeah it was noted for carrying some pretty big loads. Probably on his way to pick up a new toy train set or art piece.
