  1. I'm sure I clicked (or did not click) a button somewhere, but I requested artillery support but then "oh wait, not that guy!" quickly issued the Cease Fire command. The stationary U.S. motorized mortar unit still shows its full ammo complement and still shows as Cease Fire when anyone else (including the requesting unit) clicks on it. It's been that way throughout the entire battle and I'm not sure if it's a known glitch (my apologies) or if I've made another mistake. Thanks!
  2. Oh, wait, Hubert... I just read your response again. You said two units had to be adjacent to Baghdad to trigger the event. The 3rd Indian SF in Karbala stayed in Karbala -- never attacked; never moved adjacent to Baghdad. The XIII Indian attacked, then retreated to Hamadan. That's only one adjacent unit, which didn't trigger the collapse. The Iranian Corps and the XIII Indian moved next to Baghdad in 1944, triggering the collapse. So, I wonder why the Allied AI wasn't savvy enough to realize years ago that it just needed to move the 3rd Indian SF one square so it could be adjacent to Baghdad. The downstream effect for me as the Axis was that I left Syria undefended, while using the upgraded Syrian Corps and a handful of Italians to attack Egypt from across the Suez. Once Iraq fell all of a sudden (without warning!!! wahhh! wahhhhhh!), I was too far away to save Damascus. But, like I said, I really like the script -- knowing what I know now, I'll definitely have to look sharp. Great game, by the way.
  3. Hubert, that does sound like the event, although there was an Allied unit in Karbala (3rd Indian Special Forces, two squares away) and another (XIII Indian Corps, adjacent) that attacked Baghdad for several turns before it retreated to Hamadan in Persia (four squares away) once the Russians took over Persia (by event, forming the Iranian Corps in Tehran). So, for at least a few months, two Allied units were within two squares of Baghdad until one of them chickened-out and retreated. So, in 1944, the Iranian Corps suddenly found its mettle and moved southwest with the XIII Indian and sure enough, when they moved within two squares of Baghdad, that triggered the collapse of the Iraqi government. Not sure why it didn't happen earlier. Then I think "hmmm... why would the XIII Indian just sit there in Hamadan for over a year when all it had to do was move within two squares of Baghdad to cause a government collapse?" But thanks for the reply! I really like the event, by the way -- keeps me on my toes -- but to my other point... if I'd been wise enough to stage a German or Italian unit in Baghdad, would have that prevented the collapse?
  4. I benefitted from the pro-Axis coup in Iraq (can't remember the date/year) and fended off enough attempts by the Indian Brits to take Baghdad that they camped out nearby and sat still for at least a year. Persia sided with the Russians. I built an Iraqi corps and used it to take back Basra (but not Kuwait, which apparently left the port of Basra still in Allied hands). I went further a-field and isolated another Indian unit near the coast who inexplicably headed for the hills from the relative safety of the town it was in. Sometime in early 1944, another event turned the tables completely on the Axis, toppling the government, and eliminating all at once both the unit in Baghdad and the marauding Iraqi unit headed for the western border of India. I am guessing this was a scripted event. Can anyone confirm? I was definitely lulled into a state of confidence, trusting that I was going to be able to use Iraq as a base to push north against Persia and then the Caucasus. If losing Iraq is indeed scripted, then if I'd moved in a German unit into Baghdad, would have that German been eliminated by the "pro-Allied" event? Thanks!
  5. I guess it is sort of a rough rectangle made up of several tiles that are white, but it only covers a patch of low ground about 3/4 of way across from the German side of the map I will admit that I turned on all the weather/fog/trees/ground cover settings to max when I ran the demo. However, I didn't think that particular demo battle had fog in it, anyway -- I think the weather is set to be clear and sunny. I haven't tried this in ages, but what's the screen-capture process to get this while it's happening and then is there a way I can post the image? I could also try playing it by setting it to XP compatibility mode and see if that does anything.
  6. Right -- this is indeed a massive battle. It's called "To The Volga." I built a new Windows 7 64-bit PC with an Intel i7-960, 12 GB of memory, an SATA III SSD running (successfully!) at a 6 Gbps data rate, and a ridiculously sized GeForce GTX-580 video card (or video brick, more aptly) -- I am curious to see what the difference will be between my old retail Dell from 2004 (128 video card) and this new machine. If I figured out what the optimal settings were on this new machine and loaded "To The Volga" (I need to purchase CMBB again... my download link has since expired), I wonder if I should expect a dramatic increase in performance -- setting all the orders for my troops is going to take real human time for me to plan, set waypoints, orders, etc. of course (which takes most of the time for each turn in this battle - err... operation - anyway). But then I wonder if I just downloaded the old CMBB demo (v1.04) and played it in Win7x64 mode just to see the difference in performance, and I noticed that one of the demo battles "Citadel Schwerpunkt" (sp?) (a handful of German tanks rolling across rolling hills) had a big white blotch that wasn't textured with grass in a part of the lower-lying elevation areas between the hills. Now, I am sure there are probably all sorts of reasons why this white splotch shows up -- top-of-the-line video card not playing nicely with older graphics elements, running CMBB in 64-bit vs. 32-bit mode, CMBB prefs need a refresh, etc. I guess I am even wondering if I should see a dramatic increase in performance with this new video card -- (I am no expert in this stuff, if you haven't figured that out yet) seeing that the game is "older." Problem is that I have an undeniable addiction to Battlefront's CMx1 series, so I'd really appreciate some starter suggestions for optimizing how each of the three plays within Windows 7 (or the XP compatibility mode). The white splotch is a real head-scratcher, though. Suggestions?
  7. actually... both. I realized soon after that To the Volga was the huge operation I had remembered. So, that's solved by getting CMBB again (lost the original from way back - oh well). But I also am trying to locate the Stalingrad Pack -- I remember "Boots and Tracks" as one of the names and "Der Kessel" but I can't seem to find a definitive answer as to where it is, currently. Help! Thanks!
  8. (Sorry, I should have created two posts -- one for my Win7 and one for the location to this awesome scenario) I was hoping someone could direct me to wherever the large "Stalingrad" scenario pack is located so I can grab it again.
  9. Several years back, I remember a "Stalingrad" scenario one could download from a repository somewhere. It was a HUGE battle in the tractor works and each turn took a very long time for the computer I had at the time to process the turn before it replayed the turn. Now I am on the verge of building a new PC specifically for gaming and hopefully, it will be a different experience. I've never had the hardware to play any of the CMx2 games. From what I read, it sounds like they play a little differently than the CMx1 games (I'll have to get a demo here and there and try for myself). But specifically, has anyone experienced an issue with either Windows 7 x64 or even more specifically, a GeForce GTX-570 card with these "older" games?
  10. Managed to get the corps out unhindered all the way back to Bordeaux, where it's foie gras and sauternes all day, every day! The carrier re-fitted in Bordeaux for a few turns and has blasted a UK bomber wing into oblivion, sunk a few weak destroyers, and is causing general mayhem. Cruiser bit the dust while straying too close to the UK coast, but sunk lots of shipping. That extra cash bought the Germans two extra tank groups that are right now ready to take Leningrad. Thanks, Fort De France!
  11. very helpful... thanks I'm still tempted/intrigued by the whole South American thing, though. What a blast it would be to keep all those goodies nearby and then perhaps try to secure the Panama Canal with a surprise invasion -- but I think FdF is still too close to U.S. mainland such that a cruiser or the Yorktown in Puerto Rico could easily smash the invasion force... forget that idea they're all coming home to the Fatherland (given I can disable the corps accordingly)
  12. as a Johnny Come Lately to this game and thread, I was wondering if the community might help me sort out the pros and cons of the Fort De France situation... Current State: It's October 1940. I accepted the challenge and moved a German corps to Fort De France (couldn't unload quite yet due to the port supply value, but did next turn). The $$$ has been transferred to the Germans (seized the gold, I guess). A German aircraft carrier and cruiser are now floating around the port. The U.S. is issuing stern warnings, but I see their activation is still sitting at 22%. Clarification: I read the script details in the manual that DE514 is supposed to fire off. But I don't see that one described anywhere (this has probably been answered elsewhere...) Suggestions: Is there any advantage to leaving the corps, cruiser, and carrier in/near Fort De France now that I've got the $$$? Has anyone successfully employed a "South American" gambit to get the Argentinians, others involved? Is that even an advantage worth the trouble? That seems to be the only reason to keep them there, otherwise, I could use them back near the Channel or maybe the Med. Does removing the corps from Fort De France decrease the chance the U.S. will activate or has the damage been done? I might need to move Japan in position to strike Pearl Harbor now just in case. Those carriers aren't helping much, anyway -- I've managed for the first time to actually push all Chinese forces out of range of any carrier support. And yeah, I guess an early U.S. entry makes it harder for Japan to grab the DEI, Indochina, Thailand, etc. trade-offs... trade offs... thanks group!
