  1. Honestly I am so grateful for the reduced price for previous owners of the game. $35 to bring the who deal up to engine 4 is not a bad deal, I mean we're getting on board regular/vehicle mounted mortars and the updated QB force selection. That right there is worth the money to me. It's also the kind of stuff that keeps me coming back, and getting new stuff whenever I can.

  2. @MikeyD Nice, that makes 4 of us. My word, Presque Isle is a ways out there. I've only been up that way once, and I've lived here most of my 35 years. I always kind of figured wargaming would have to be popular, with the long winters and all. If you don't like winter sports your options are that are the other state pass time, Allens Coffee Brandy.

  3. OMG, Mord I am also a maineah, I think BF Steve is as well. Every time I buy a CM title I have to pay state sales tax, couldn't figure it out until I had a technical issue with the site and he responded personally and we got to talking a bit. I am over by Bath, not too too far out of your neck of the woods.

  4. I tend to give group orders to platoon size units, and only in the beginning of the battle. About the only time I 'need' to split up squads is for urban and heavy woodland combat. Since the infantry TacAI behavior improvements in 4.0 there is even less of that micro. As the rest have said, it's got to be fun. I really don't enjoy anything over a couple companies at most in CM, but in something like Steel Panthers a couple battalions is just fine.

  5. What really strikes home watching these videos is the terrain they fight in. Watching the endless videos from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan shows a lot of sandy terrain, mountains and some light vegetation. These videos from the Ukraine look like they could have been shot on the road that leads to my house.... Lots of foliage, familiar housing, street signs that would make sense to me if I were there. Kind of crazy to think that it is indeed possible I may have to set an ambush somewhere on the main road that runs through the island (connected to main land by bridges) to stop some badness from coming through. Civil War is anything but civil, and seems to be in vogue this decade.....

  6. @Bloody Bill - I am curious as to the speed/type of your internet connection. Where I live up here in Maine didn't even have cable or high speed net until 2 years ago, and it doesn't take near that long to load videos to You Tube for me. I use the free version of FRAPS to record in game, then edit the bits together.

As mentioned earlier, lowering resolution will help considerably. I tend not to mess with anything over 480p, as size grows exponentially faster up to 720p.

Best of luck, was looking forward to watching v3.0 in action!

  7. Unfortunately CMSF is lower on the CMx2 engine totem pole then CMBN v1.12. Development for this title is no more, with the exception of mission and mods made by the community. The CMx2 engine has now progressed to v3.0, and while outwardly similar, are almost completely different games.

The good news is, Combat Mission: Black Sea should be out sometime this year and will bring us back to modern warfare with the v3.0 engine! With the later modules adding decent MBT's and air support to the Syrian side, you could almost feel like you were fighting a peer nation instead of uncons and the Syrian Army. With CMBS the US and Russia will finally square off in a CM title. Granted, it will take a while for CMBS and it's following modules to match the quantity of content you get with CMSF+Marines+British+NATO, but the game play will be at a whole new level of awesome!

Two games have gotten me sprung like this before now, and those were CMBN when it launched and the Matrix Games title 'Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations' which I tested pre-launch and still test patches to this day. Each of these have given me countless hours of play, fractions of pennies per hour, and I can tell that CMBS is going to be amazing!

LoL, rant concluded, hope there was a little helpful info sprinkled in my ravings.

  8. --------------SPOILERS------------------

I did it the same way. I played as the Russians first and won, but was surprised when the 251/9's popped out by the left (German right) treeline and hit my IS2's with flanking fire. Well, when I played as the Germans I threw 3 Panthers down there with a platoon of PzGrenadiers. I kept two a little farther back (by the road), and placed another platoon in the trees at the center. On the left I sent the last platoon and the other platoon of PzG's. I managed to smother the Russians in a cross fire when they advanced, but I did suffer some freak long range losses to the 122mm gun of a single IS-2. I lost 3 Panthers, they lost everything. In an ironic side note, every single Russian kill was scored by a single IS-2. He got all three Panthers, one when he was immobilized.

  9. In one mission, I used them for a 'drive by' shooting of Germans I had surprised. I was also surprised, but my instinct said GO and I drove them right in, two of the men on board had Bren guns and there was a Sten in there too. The volume of fire those boys put down at close range was a sight to behold, and the Germans didn't even have time to get a 'nade off. Granted, this doesn't happen all the time, even some of the time, but it was really fun to watch! :)

  10. I am very excited for the release of MG. Kind of felt like the Normandy folks were getting left out in the cold while the 'shiny and new' CMFI got all the attention :D

On the level, financial issues have prevented me from even getting the upgrade to CMBN 2.0 let alone buy CMFI and GL. Now the the next module for CMBN will have most of the stuff I was missing out on from CMFI (read German Paratroops) I will still be able to enjoy all the amazing stuff that's been introduced in CMFI. The $35 for a module is far easier to scrape together then 90 or so for FI/GL.

Also can't wait for CM Black Sea or whatever it's being called now. Be nice to have the new engine set in modern times again. :D

  11. That's how I prefer to do it in MOUT, lay down so much fire that the enemy vacates their protected positions and are picked off by small arms fire. That is the inherent trouble with being the attacker. A well disciplined foe will not open fire, revealing his position, until the opportunity for getting a kill is very high.

  12. I won that movie in a contest on Facebook that included posting your thoughts on lessons the US learned from the Soviet experience in Afghanistan, and what they had to learn the hard way themselves. I lit up said comment board just talking and ended up winning the movie, a poster, and $100 to Amazon which bought me Rise of Flight and some books, all in all totally worth the time spent.

As far as the movie, the above comments are accurate, but I didn't go into the movie expecting much so it was easy not to be disappointed. The kit featured in the movie was pretty accurate to my knowledge of soviet equipment. GP-30's loaded from the muzzle like they should, and there were the usual assortment of Mi-24 Hind-A's, Antonov transports, BTRs, and BMP-2s. The acting was meh, but it was watchable. Loved the blonde..... ;D

  13. Here is a book that Amazon has made available free of charge for the kindle.

    http://www.amazon.com/Panzer-Tactics-German-Small-Unit-ebook/dp/B00CDWVNXG/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1372969336&sr=1-1

You can d/l the Kindle emulator and read it in your browser with an Amazon account. I highly recommend it for the diagrams and pics alone.

EDIT - Guess i was a little late to the punch, as it isn't free anymore, but still worth a look if you have the $15 USD to shell out for it.
