  1. Ah so a German crew from another Panther?

    That makes sense.

Or do you mean say a surviving T-34 crew?

    Not so credible.

Well, it is obviously possible in TOW2 to do both, since Infantry can do it. But, I am more apt to have an existing crew that bailed act as a sort of 'reserve' for the rest of my armor, so if a crew member from another tank is killed, I can call in one of these guys to take his place. Am I wrong in assuming that many WWII tanks had controls that would be at least operable for a tanker from another army? If I am way off, then by all means educate me. :D

  2. So who do you put in?

Are there guys on the ToW battlefield (apart from the actual crews) with these skill sets somehow?

Anyway i’m sure a bunch of people love it.

I don’t, but it wasn’t a waste of money as based on the first episode I didn’t bother with the others.

As for others with the right skill sets, not really. If you have enough survivors from one of your own destroyed tanks then it can be done with a degree of, "may be possible" but more often then not the crew gets smoked when the tank does.

  3. As some here may know, I am a rabid CM fan, and have every CM product made with the exception of the British module for CMSF. I have also purchased TOW2 Kursk with the Caen expansion for christmas and have played that a ton lately after getting fired up from the CM: BN forums. I say that TOW is great, but you can't really compare it to CM: BN. They are two different games after two different things. TOW allows you to select which round your main gun will fire, and what kind of grenades you want individual soldier to throw. The TacAI in CM does all of these things, so you can focus on where you place your troops. Now, the damage model in TOW is amazing, really, and with detailed armor hits on you can see exactly where a shell went, and what it did when it got there, beautiful. Pausing is a way of life in TOW, as it is in CMx2 playing real time, so the only thing I can say is at least CM has the option of being turn based, TOW does not. And lastly, it is a way of life to capture enemy weapons in TOW, and this is not true to real life, so it is not true to CM. There is a whole thread about it around here somewhere, but it can get you fragged by blue on blue faster then anything else in the real world. These are my thoughts, flame on... ;)

PS - Gibsonm is right in many respects, but I disagree with is being 100% click-fest. If you want to play it like a traditional RTS you can, but if you chose to put more thought into it, it will reward you for such. And as he said, a ruskie peasant climbs into a Panther and drives off.............sounds like the start of a bad joke to me, lololol

  4. I worry for new players, since us old hands will probably know all of this already. I have engaged enough Shermans, Stuarts, Panthers, Tigers, Mk IVs, and numerous other armored vehicles that I know what gun will work against what part of the enemy tank, and if his gun can kill me. That, and my recent shedding of my need to dual at long range with enemy tanks and use real tactics (thanks gib) that I know that all of the penetration stuff is useless if your aren't using your tanks the right way. In CMAK I killed two Panthers and a Mk IV with an M8 Greyhounds 37mm gun, certainly not in a straight fight, but because I used terrain and the darkness to get my little A/C behind em and the high rate of fire did the rest. I can't wait for moments like that in CMBN!!!

  5. I think dynamic planning can help here. I never assault an objective with a less then fit squad. If the one I ear marked for it is not capable, the job goes to someone else. If there is no one else, I change the plan. Infantry soldier tend to be a tough, hard headed (read not dumb, strong willed) crowd for good reason, and many a trooper has said "I can come on line sir" with parts hanging off. Just my thoughts

  6. Really, I am overly excited about this game. I am almost sure that if it's the only game I buy in 2011, I will be happy. This is so nice I want to go play CMAK, but when I do I will want the graphics and 1 - 1 infantry of CMSF, and then after it all I will end up going Blue vs Blue in NATO, USA vs Germany, and it's all your fault. ;) Really nice DAR, getting me pumped, who do I have to give a first born child to in order to get on the Beta team. I have a wife too if anyone wants her instead ;)

  7. LOL, Happy New Year everyone!!! Best part of 2011 is going to be either CM:BN being released, or my kids 1st birthdays, still don't know which ;) Either way, since their b-day isn't till August, I hope the old lady can yell at me for playing CM:BN that day instead of spoon feeding the kiddos with a birthday cap on my head :)

  8. This is almost exactly what is written in the TOW2 manual. Funny it says to use enemy weapons when ever possible if they are superior to yours, but that ammo will be gone when it's gone unless you capture more along the way. I can see that fighting on the Eastern and Western fronts would be different in this regard. Since there was a large gap in quality of German and Soviet weapons early in the war, and gap that was much smaller when compared to the Allies in Europe. Sure, there are many individual examples of one piece of equipment being better then the adversary's corresponding piece, but the command and supply structure was out standing for the most part, as was initiative of junior officers and NCOs, which really make a difference on the battle field.

  9. Maybe they could be issued only to the 82nd and only during certain time periods, i.e. the Bulge and crossing into Germany. In any sense, the chase across France and the Bulge are both out of the scope of Normandy, but I think it would be a great addition to future modules ;)

OT - I have been playing a lot of Theatre of War 2: Caen and have found that, in contrast to a CM game, this game is almost dependent on enemy weapons and equipment. I know u can turn the auto - pick up off but, i never do :) it's fun to get an MG42 if you don't already have one ;) Now if Normandy was out already, I would be playing that, but nooooo....... LOL, j/k, take all the time u need, I'm sure it will be worth the wait!

  10. Did GI's ever really scavenge panzerfausts? I have never heard of this and I wonder if it happened....in a documented fasion. I mean that I never read about it despite my rather large WWII book collection.

I was wondering about this myself. I have heard several people here and on other forums and I heard it mentioned several time. I also have done much research myself at the local library and on the web to no avail. I would love if someone could provide a link to any information on the subject. I can imagine that US troops would have wanted effective personal AT weapons and since Bazookas weren't handed out to rifle squads, what choice do you have. In WinSPWW2 mech rifle squads are issued Bazookas, I wonder if this was accurate since no other war games I've played include this.

@ Krilly - Sorry I what was written angered you, but since it had to do with uses for enemy weapons I added it. Just to make it clear, I myself didn't see these events so whether of not they actually happened, I don't know, but I do know that the streeses of combat can do strange things to a soldier if there is not an adequate structure around him to provide a release. Only took me one visit to Togus as a kid to figure that out. Anyways, sorry for the hijack!

  11. I'll tell ya, from what I was told, and this isn't a whole lot, the reason this SSgt was with our unit was because he had killed a bunch of civs that were being used as human shields by some insurgent. The insurgents opened fire on his patrol and he returned fire with a Mk.19 AGL. You can imagine for yourself how that worked out, anyways, he showed up some pictures he had taken shortly after the incident. Not of bodies or anything, but of him kneeling on the ground vomiting as he was pretty shook up about the whole thing. They sent him home and on to DS school, and he was waiting for the appointment to DS school when he was with us. I have heard of the drop weapon thing happening after all this in the news and went "I hope thats no one I know". I took the idea with a grain of salt, but others, who knows.....

  12. Tell me about it!!! I'm up here in the great state of Maine and we just declared a state of emergency, close airports (yes, we have two) and all that good stuff, I hope we don't lose power. Stove is electric and we've got to keep the babies warm somehow...... Eh, we'll figure it out, resourceful types around here ;)

  13. When I was in the Army I had a SSgt that told me to make sure I had an AK or two in what ever vehicle I was using on patrol. That way if I greased a not so bad bad guy I could fire off a few AK rounds into the wall, drop the weapon, and say they were an insurgent. No bull folks, and this was in Basic training. The SSgt in question was a bad a** tho and I have no doubt he was telling me this from experience.

  14. Hey, thanks so much!!! I was wondering why my generated missions weren't working so I played the first mission of German campaign instead. No joy there either, as after the end of the first mission no save. At least this time I might have more then one soldier from an infantry platoon survive, lololol, there is always a bright side!

  15. The menu system in CMSF was tough for me to get used to as well, but now that I have the gist of it, it is almost as intuitive as the older style. The original reminds me of Close Combat in the right click menu, and that is just dead easy for anyone. The new commands available in CMSF are the selling point for me, and it means that new features can be added without confusion for players since they just go in one of four categories. I like it, but thats just me.

  16. wow, @ bmackay - I would have guessed Marines too on first glance, and I am a, shall I say, "avid" amateur student of WWII History. And this is knowing that there were no marines in France, the similarity is there. I like the uniforms personally, but I can see the reason those troops wanted to ditch them in a hurry with a lot of SS units operating in the area. Like when someone asks me why our soldiers weren't picking up AKs of the ground in Vietnam to use them when the M16 was so faulty (no cleaning kits or chromium [spelling] lined bolts era). Of course, the reason being is that in jungle warfare when the enemy is only 20 meters away and the quickest way to ID friend or foe is from the report of their weapon when it fires. I spoke to a man once who was an adviser in 64 and he told me much the same thing, only between the M1 Carbine and the SKS (he had NOTHING good to say about the M1A1 carbine, but I don't know myself, always heard they were great weapons) The lesson learned is that it's a very bad thing to be mistaken for the enemy in a fire fight.

OT - Ironic I thought after thinking about it, there were no Marines at Normandy, this is fact, but later on during Operation Dragoon, the first aircraft to land in southern France was an Air Corps P-51B being flown by a Navy arty spotter pilot, strange circumstance war brings!
