  1. Heh, how was that storm anyways? We are at the vanguard of it now and it looks to be a bruiser! We got about 5" yesterday and they are expecting up to 18" in parts of the state today. This is the price for living so close to the ocean, sleet instead of straight snow, ugh. Well at least I have Combat Mission and 5 month old babys, I will not be bored, lololol.
  2. If Jesus came down today, said the rapture is on full blast and you're being called home, but you have to leave now, I would tell him to beat it, I'm waiting for CMBN and not even you, Jesus, is gonna get me off of this rock until at least one module has come out!!! The hardcore BF fans will wait until kingdom come for this release, they might whine and moan about it, but they will wait. Where else are we gonna go for this kind of gaming fix? And I will bet you my ticket to heaven that BF knows this, and also knows that they can take their time to make sure that CMBN will be the best it can be when they release. If I didn't already know the CMx2 system pretty well, I would be playing the crap out of that day in and day out until that time, but since that isn't the case, FSX and IL2 will keep me sedated, and a little Harpoon ANW to keep the strategy juices flowing. +1 to BF keeping the faith and waiting until it's done, we don't want no doughy uncooked CMBN!
  3. Tell you the truth, I had no idea CM even existed until I went up to Portland, ME and found the anthology siting in the bargain bin. A bargain, you bet, all three games for like six bucks. I bought it on impulse, thinking that it looked cool and would make a good flight sim diversion, and if it was even close to Steel Panthers I would be happy. What a life changing purchase that was. I still fly flight sims, and still play SP from time to time (more before CMSF came out for modern stuff, now only for obscure modern stuff) but I am now firmly in the wargaming crowd. I even upped my level of command and got into TOAWIII, it really changed my idea of satisfying gaming!
  4. Personally I thought is was common internet sense to search for an answer to your question before starting another thread to rehash the same conversation again. If no one ever used the search function, there would be triples of the same thread in every forum. In other places I frequent, threads are locked if the person didn't bother to use the search function before posting a question, since that is what search is there for. Not knowing you can search to find the answer to your question, that is one thing and I can understand. But knowing the option is there and just no doing it since you don't feel like it, seriously, it's clicking a button. It takes a lot less effort then starting a new thread, that's for sure. Common sense I would think.
  5. LOL, will have to shovel myself out first, but this could be a possibility! From what I have gathered, Steve himself lives somewhere in this state, but Maine is just about as large as the rest of New England so it's like trying to find a needle in a stack of pine cones I would be more then willing to watch a live feed of one tho, didn't think of that as an option, and I could bring the kids, since I wouldn't have to go anywhere
  6. HeHe, it was worth asking. Pennsylvania will probably prove a little to ambitious for my means, so if there are any beta guys willing to host a little hang out session in the Maine, New Hampster (yeah, I said it ), Vermont, Mass, and maybe CT or RI, I would be willing to bring any beer, food, or whatever else if you provide the CMBN and a roof!
  7. One problem we face, in this day and age it's multiplied, is the force multiplier of mass media. I know that TV shows don't directly kill people, but the way mass media sways a fickle public opinion, and in turn votes, elections, governments, and policies, can not be ignored. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have not only been fought on the front lines, but on the front page and the CNN news ticker. The US Gov knows that there is a large and loud anti-war movement in the US. I personally think it is what got Obama elected, any liberal running for office would have nailed it, even my kitty. The Taliban knows this too, and they also know quite well how to run an unconventional war. They watch the same cable news we do, and can almost watch in real time the effect their actions and our actions against them are seen by our nation. They must actually laugh at the fact that our own media never makes public out successes, only our failures and mistakes. When we build a school that thousands of Afghan kids will go to and learn from a hopefully unbiased view of the world, we don't hear about it, when we bomb their old school on accident, it's on every news program in the world. We are slanting the war against ourselves, building anti-war and anti-US sentiment across the globe, and all the Taliban has to do is show up and die, which they seem more then willing to keep on doing!
  8. Hmmmm, favorite new NATO weapon, that's a difficult one, there are so many. For infantry weapons, the G3 is my new favorite assault rifle. The MG3 my favorite new machine gun. The PzFaust 3 is my favorite new un-guided AT weapon. The german hand grenades are neat too, I don't know if it's modeled, but they are basically offensive grenades with a sheath that can be slid around them to make them defensive grenades, very neat stuff. For IFVs, the Marder is excellent, but my favorite is the CV9035. It has the largest useful IFV gun in game, enough to shred BMP and BTR vehicles, and dangerous to tanks from the flanks. The lack of an ATGM is a serious weakness, but they are not tank destroyers, they are IFVs, so when used for what they are meant for, that doesn't become an issue. The only place where it's helpful in it's designed role is taking out hardened bunkers or houses, but the 35mm cannon does that well anyways. I know the 73mm gun on some BMPs is larger caliber, but not as accurate or useful as the 35mm. For armor, well, the options are limited, lol, but the 2A6M+ is a real treat, must be careful tho, cause like all tanks, the AT14 can punch a hole in it an any angle.
  9. LoL, I figured on the corporate HQ bit, good for a laugh tho, there are maybe ten buildings in the whole state that could fit Battlefronts greatness in them anyways Now I am truly intrigued, and if Steve is out there listening, somewhere, it would be far easier to go check out CMBN in state then down to PA, but I wont start crying...........yet.......if not I figured that he was in New England somewhere, cause whenever I would see him post about crappy weather, I was having the same crappy weather, he better not be in Bath, I'll be camping out in front of his house
  10. Granted, this war wasn't as much of a Cold War proxy like Korea and Vietnam, but the equipment was. Iran having recently changed management, the inventory was mostly western, including the vaunted F-14 Tomcat, but also the old standbys like the F-5 and F-4. Iraq was armed mainly with Soviet block equipment, that is until mid war imports of Mirage F-1s and the mighty Exocet missile. Meanwhile, the Iranians, cut off from western aid (excluding the Iran Contra) had to turn to the Soviets to replace losses and help fabricate spares for existing aircraft. I am also very interested in the Iran - Iraq war, but mainly the aerial conflict. On the ground it was a bloody mess the like of WWI, but in the air two marginally trained air forces went at it, and the fighting was legendary. It's a shame there isn't more information out there, since this war would make the stuff of so many Top Gun style movies, I mean, F-14s man! F-14s!
  11. lol, yeah really! Why, where is the HQ? Closer to me then you are?
  12. No waaayyy, this is way closer then Chicago! I live in Maine, and NYC is about 5 1/2 hours away (at 75 mph or so, maybe 80) from Brunswick, so another two isn't bad. When I was young i got from Pitman, NJ back here to Woolwich, ME (couple miles from Bath) in just over 6 hours, so this is in the day trip category, count me in!!!
  13. I did not get the British module. I got Marines bundled with CMSF, and I grabbed NATO about a week after it came out, three nations in one module was too good to pass up. I don't plan on getting the British Forces module since Normandy is coming out and I know my CMSF time will be curtailed for quite a while when that happens I just didn't see a real reason to get it, It has one nations armed forces, no huge Red items, the only thing that really makes me want to get it are on-board mortars. LoL, no offense to the brits, but their equipment doesn't really capture my attention like some others nations do.
  14. Hmm, Chicago is driving distance from Maine. I may just make it. If I can get wifey to take the kids to her moms that is. Heh, actually it may be cheaper to fly, and I am due for one good out of New England trip this year, and Air Combat USA is still a touch on the expensive side, and this promises to be a good time so we shall see....
  15. The only time zooks/shrecks had any effect on infantry in CMx1 was when it was the enemy firing at your very last MG team, and kills every member.
  16. You don't technically have to perform recce with any unit in particular, any infantry unit with eye-balls can work in a pinch. If you have a route that allows you to stay concealed, most of the route at least, then vehicles can be useful to get recon teams to a spot that provides a good Line of Sight (LOS) to the suspected enemy position. Then you let them sit for a moment, assign target arcs so they will focus their spotting. Patience is key with recce work, cause if you are moving, you are seen easier and can't spot nearly as well. As soon as an enemy unit moves, you should spot him, after waiting a bit to figure out enemy strength and disposition, I start making my plan of attack at this time as far as Air/Arty support. Where and when smoke must be used, or even if I need to. Normally it's just timing I figure our now, as the basic plan was laid out as I deployed my troops. This is how I try to do it, and it doesn't work every time, since nothing ever does, but it is a good starting point. CMSF is a type of game where, if you were to put every forum member and give them the same scenario to play out, and watched every re-play, they would all be unique. There are many different schools of thought when it comes to tactical strategy, and many, many, many more individual variations on those schools, to create a very large pool or ideas for the same situation. Trial and Error is your friend, since we have the luxury of troopers who aren't alive, and we can lose as many as we want in the learning process and no one will protest on our lawns! Take advantage of this, and practice, practice, practice. I played the original demo (with like two or three missions) for months before buying the game just learning the new system (versus CMx1) I do hope you stay at it, this game rewards persistence and thought with a realistic combat gaming experience that will leave you very satisfied.
  17. The Canadian campaign has been very enjoyable for me personally. I took the advise Paper Tiger gave a while ago when this topic of preserving buildings and keeping friendly casualties down at the same time came up. True, you will lose points for killing building you shouldn't, but you will lose more if your boys get all shot up. If I take fire from anywhere, it get a healthy dose of whatever can get an LOS on the target, and then some arty as soon as it starts to fall, which is when I slack off the HE from IFVs, Recce, Leos, Infantry squads, ATGM vehicles, and the kitchen sink. In a certain mission, I ended up wasting two of four preserve buildings, but passed my friendly casualty requirement, so it was a Major Victory, and on the first play through I was stoked. I say, the order of priorities should go like this: 1. Preserve friendly forces 2. attain objectives 3. Destroy enemy forces 4. Preserve infrastructure in the battle area This formula has worked well thus far, and can be a ton of fun too!
  18. Ahh, but thats the beauty of the human race in general. Why else would we build giant monuments to ourselves? I used to think it was to leave a mark on the rest of history, but my view is different now. They built them because the have the knowledge, the materials, and the man power, and want to show off how great they are. That is why we are constantly trying to build a bigger and better everything, since we have the knowledge, materials, and personnel. Tell me the Hubble is there just to get pretty pictures? Or that sky scrapers are built just a story or two above the next tallest one? All those things exist because we can build them, and we love to show off! Human nature, it's what we do BTW - All random rants and raves are strictly IMO, just FYI
  19. LoL, that is the difference between us, the drooling public, and Steve, my lord and savior When he looks and a screen shot taken somewhere south west of heaven, he doesn't see wonderful pixeltruppen, he sees missing ammo pouches! Good thing someone is, lol, this DAR is just great, I have spent almost as much time in the BF forums this week as I have spent playing CMSF (which I am playing the Canadian campaign in, good stuff, my respects to Paper Tiger, great missions!) And....that reminds me. The demo charges that are carried by troops in CMSF are door/wall breaching charges for the most part from what I've seen. Now, I know that the charges used in WWII were, I guess, satchel charges. Like a bag of Compound B with a fuse that can be thrown at a bunker, used to demolish road blocks, etc. Now, will the demo charges be different in CM:BN then CMSF, or similar in power and use?
  20. LOL, my girlfriend hates my gaming, and yes, it is because when she is whining about this and that (she is right about that, I don't listen) and I am like, yes, wow, thats too bad, ok...... She hates it, hates, hates, hates, hates to the one-hundredth power games that I enjoy. Man, the first battle is to play, and meet the second battle when I get there.
  21. lets not be hasty now..... lol, and the public loves cute kitty names for armored fighting vehicles, so bring on the kitty names I say!!!!
  22. Any fight is serious when people are shooting at you, just my thoughts
  23. I had a similar problem. I had patched my CMSF + Marines to 1.31 but shortly after that I bought the NATO module which brought my game back down to 1.30. Then I had to get the patch for NATO 1.31. Basically, which ever module is the latest one you have (they go Marines, British, NATO), get that patch (1.31), and select all the modules you have installed on the check box list and your good to go.
  24. all good points, and I really hadn't run through the chain of thought I would go through climbing into a WWII era tank and trying to operate it effectively. For the Soviet crewman it's like leaving his Cessna for a 747, and for the German it's like getting out of his 18-wheeler and getting into a Ford Festiva I do find the use of captured field guns to seem reasonable enough though. That is another manual recommended strategy in TOW, the use of captured AT/Arty/Inf guns. I can surely see a reduced efficiency of the gun crews, but trial and error would allow them to put fire down range. Ur thoughts? I had not actually used captured tanks as anything but emergency Arty, I figured they were immobilized, but perhaps this was the problem. lol
  25. It is great to watch someone else play the CMx2 system, and it has caused me to increase my CMSF time dramatically! In fact, while playing the first mission of the Canadian campaign, I have been able to use this fire and maneuver type of advance (the right way, I know, I know) to great effect. And, as has been stated, when tried in CMx1 more often then not the results weren't the ones I was after. I really, really, really can't wait for Normandy. It's whats keeping me alive, I have dreams about it, LoL, I need a CM rehab I think, but I don't think anyone here has a leg to stand on to force an intervention, so the vicious cycle continues
