  1. LOL, I am $23 short!!!! I will have to wait a couple more days to order, Steve, u better save one of those steelbooks for me, I am not all that far away!!!
  2. LoL, at least the mystery is solved. I am thinking this tank is a loyalist vehicle, since the man in front of it is wearing something resembling a uniform. We have this AFV in SF so I plan on using it I don't know why but I love soviet armor, guess I feel like it's too easy with an M1A2 to kill everything. Kind of like a Sherman and a Tiger with a T-72M vs M1A2, one on one you will be lucky to get a kill, lucky!!!
  3. Here is a pic of a tank I saved. I really cant tell in this one as the barrel isn't shown, but the wheels are. I am now thinking T-55 now that I am looking at it, but I am not sure. Also the other is the AT-3 round. If you can distinguish type, that would be excellent. DUH! Just looked at the pic again with your advice, T-55. I can see the gap between the two front wheels, lol, a little attention to detail, no wonder my Drill Sergeant used to give me so much greif, lololol
  4. Honestly, the folks down there, he was probably eaten.......it was you wasn't it??? Another candidate for FEMA re-edumication!!! Or is that PETA? Either way, get ready for a helicopter ride
  5. LoL, the weather up here has been CRAP!!! We cant even have RAIN without something bad happening. We had 3.5" of rain and 2 feet of snow melt off in one day, so there was a ton of flooding throughout the state (Which Steve lives in as well ) AND, a squirrel jumped on some power lines down by Kittery and killed power to almost 10,000 people!!! Maine is a strange place, too close to Canada I reckon
  6. wow, I knew the Libyan army was ill equipped but....wow. I have been searching news sites and have seen the rebels with SPG-9 RR (could be M106, but the sights look identical to the russian versions, I am no RR expert so I may be wrong), quad 14.5 AAMG, ZU23 AA, a single AT-3 without launching equipment, and an abandoned looking BMP-2 (30mm, no 73mm) plus technicals and a Toyota Camry (lol). I believe a saw a T-62 running in rebel hands, the turret is of a lower profile then the T-55 and a longer main gun. No ERA or anything but I wanted them to have a fighting chance. T-72s make me happy, so I am glad you told me this. I am going to change some of my force structures as to the info you provided and see how it works out in a battle. Earlier I was able to take out 3 T-72s with RPGs, great fun R vs R is in CMSF, great fun indeed!
  7. I have been working on a scenario, titled Battle for Libya (lol), for my own amusement lately. I would like to know your take on what kind of equipment they would be using. I have so far equipped loyalist troops as reserve mech infantry with BMP-2s and upgraded T-62MV tanks. Also a few older (AT-5 and AT-7) ATGMs. It is more of a checkpoint then a city though. Rebels have highly motivated Infantry and Uncons supported a few T-55s and a couple BMP-2s. Maybe a BTR in there to spice things up. Also a ton of technicals mounting SPG9s and ZU23s, along with the usual machine gun versions. I also have numbers on their side. But they are at the mercy of air strikes (unless NATO air power shows up and only time will tell there) We may just see the creation of a campaign while the campaign is really happening, a first for CMSF I believe. It is ironic that this conflict plays right into the type of game we play, right down to the units available and the terrain. It is like watching my favorite game play out in the real world on TV. Scary yet interesting, kind of like watching a car accident, you don't want to watch yet can't look away.
  8. Cross of Iron is an awesome movie about a German squad on the Eastern Front. Real T-34's and a Stug to boot!!! Also MG34/42, Maxim MG, 8cm Mortars, all authentic weapons and equipment, a Pak 40 as well. I just watched it the other day, ending was different but a must see. Made in 1977 I believe.
  9. I really don't know how I missed this but I am glad today is the last day, lol. Being a former Army grunt as well, I am glad that you are taking CMSF and using it in a realistic manner with the knowledge and experience you have gained in your r/l occupation. I never did see any combat, but the training exercises gave me a good idea and that is the way I fight in CMSF. Your tutorial is outstanding, and is really fleshing out my basic understanding of war. Plus, from my view of things, all I was trained for was the fireteam/squad/platoon war. Company and Battalion sized engagements were far out of the scheme of my training and knowledge. Gibsomn has helped me a TON with using armor and IFVs with some really basic stuff that opened my eyes to how it should be done. Really makes CMSF a much better time for me, thank you!!!
  10. There was a tank battle in the north of France that saw the french 1st Armored not only hold, but decimate a german armored thrust during 1940. In fact, the germans were getting ready to fall back when the french received the same order due to strategic conditions (ie, getting their butts kicked down south) It is in one of the WWII magazines I have, believe it is Chembleux or something like that, will look it up and post it later.
  11. This is good to hear. I just fried my laptop and went out to get a replacement. I got a desktop with more HD space, a slightly faster dual core CPU, and an NVidia 6340 graphics card. I have never had adequate performance for CMSF, but love it so I play anyway. On this new rig, CMSF runs smooth as butter, no joke, with setting close to max. I don't really get it myself, but I sure am happy about it. I am now even more eager for CMBN to come out, since I know I will be able to really enjoy playing it!!!
  12. HaHa, I was Mech Infantry and I can tell you, I really felt like a sardine every time I climbed into a Stryker. It was times like those when I really kicked myself for not getting Airborne in my contract, lololol.
  13. +1!! I would even go for a Tube Guy T-Shirt, or maybe a Hooded Sweatshirt. I have a 'How to Kill Zombies' one coming in the mail soon, so Tube Guy would be an easy buy for me!!!
  14. Hey folks, glad to see CMBN getting some much needed publicity. I just hope people interested don't come tot the forums first before checking out the game, they may be frightened and run away, and we don't want that to happen ,well, not before they purchase the game to keep our rants and raves going through another title or ten Great read, I always enjoy the stories of what the engine is capable of when circumstances are just right, that Priest taking out a chunk of his line when exploding would be a priceless moment.
  15. I use the T90 like I use any Syrian tank, as an ambush predator. You can't duel anything in those, since while they can dish it out, they can't take it as well as the M1 or Chally2. If I do fire at long range, I get off MAYBE two rounds before moving to a new position. I try to keep one in position to cover it's friends when they relocate. The T90 is a good tank if used correctly. The Blue forces are dangerous to any armor. Once you've exposed yourself your time is limited, so you must be sure that the moment you do so is the same moment you are in position to deliver a devastating attack.
  16. +1! Combat Mission is right up there with IL2 in my list of all time great games. Of all the money I've spent on games, very few I have gotten my moneys worth out of. CMBO,CMBB,CMAK,CMSF have all cost me pennies a day for all the time I have invested into them. Not many games make my short list, but the fact that EVERY combat mission game has made it, says a lot about the quality of the work going on here. Again, Thank You!
  17. I was trying not too, staying far away from the icons on my desktop. Then, in a moment of weakness, I was struck, and it was all downhill from there. All those dead russian tanks and pixeltruppen, they would still be alive if I had CMBN to play instead, their shed pixels are on your hands. LoL, tongue in cheek of course
  18. Congrats Lt Colonel!!! ::cheers:: I will be sure to have a couple drinks in your honor sir, you will be receiving the bill in short order All in all, I enjoy threads like this. I find that, personally, I practice things repetitively so they become more like instinct or muscle memory then anything else. We are dealing with the basics of modern warfare here, never a bad idea to say things over, and over, and over again if they important enough to do so.
  19. They really need to implement my idea of having special textures when infantry is spotted by, then fired on by the main gun of a modern battle tank. These textures, when used properly, will show a growing brown stain in the pants of said infantry, to simulate what happens BESIDES being suppressed and/or killed. This test would also be a great test of the functioning of those new textures, cause that is exactly what would happen to me if I were the bad guys in that house!
  20. We had a pretty good discussion about overwatch and bounding overwatch in a thread I started about getting my Leos smoked consistently. Overwatch is a vital component of any offensive operation in which you don't want everyone to die discovering ambushes. The Major's 'style' of instruction works for me very well, so I picked up on what he was trying to pass on and then used it in game, and shucks darn it worked like a charm. As for your original tactical problem, how to use the forces at hand while advancing up a road where enemy contact is likely, overwatch. How does this translate into the units you have on the ground. US Army infantry units break down into one basic element, the fire team. Two riflemen, a grenadier (M203 equipped rifleman in the modern day), and the SAW man. This unit, in some ways, is self sufficient on the battle field. I am not saying that you send one fire team to take Damascus, but they are able to maneuver as a unit being mutually supporting. The drill I will never forget is when you and your battle buddy advance across a field with a 'machine gun simulator' popping away. While your buddy covers you down range, you get on your feet and move. I would count it in my head, "I'm up, he sees me, I'm down", and with that you hit the dirt. Then, while you cover, your buddy does the same. The truth is, you can see this form of 'fire and maneuver' all the way up the chain of command. Fire teams provide overwatch for other fire teams, squads overwatch for other squads, platoons for platoons, etc. This is what you need to be doing to get down your road. If I were in your TacShack, I would advance a fire team (half squad) up the road with the other half providing overwatch. Once they reach a certain point, the overwatch team moves up with the scout team, rinse wash and repeat. I would also attempt if at all possible, to provide both teams with at least an MG team, preferably an IFV with some kind of auto-cannon, to provide overwatch for the whole operation. Modern warfare is quick and brutal at the point of contact, you want to bring as much firepower to bear on a target as quickly as possible to destroy it outright, or suppress them so the infantry can close with and destroy the enemy. My thoughts only of course, but rooted in tactical common sense I feel, and reiterating some points already made by others since they are important enough to be said twice!
  21. True, a game is a game. But I feel CM is way more then that. 90% of the people here want a realistic representation of commanding troops in combat. Now, we do play platoon commander and company commander at the same time, not realistic, but as far as weapon systems and how you must employ them, much more so. The "fun" I get out of this game is knowing I defeated my enemy with minimal casualties, not always an easy task. I think AA is out of the scope of CM. Very often, SA-6,10,11 SAM systems would have engaged the aircraft far, far away from the battle space. And when aircraft are on a CAS run with guided weapons, they are often out of the range of AAA and MANPADS. Helicopters on the other hand, are not, and are often engaged with RPGs. That is something I would like to see in game, but it's not likely, and not a deal breaker if it's not there.
  22. Very interesting, I split squads very often but for the most part they stay within visual range of each other. I do this since assault commands lead to leap frogging that isn't done quite how I want, so with two teams it's easier. I will have to go check this out myself!
  23. That's the thing Dan, if we beat him often, but not to badly, we would be alright. Even if we beat him badly, but not all that often. Alas, we beat him often and with very large lead pipes, I can understand not wanting to come back over to the sand box after something like that.
  24. Hehe, I remember one exercise we did where I actually fired rounds from the front opening of the FOB. It was the last part of basic, the FTX, and the QRF was SLEEPING in the adjacent tent, well big drill didn't like that so some opfor managed to get inside the wire and started shooting all sort of stuff, arty and grenade simulators, all that good stuff. Well I was in the FOB giving a report and witnessed all this. I put my face in the dirt and started firing out the opening at passing opfor. Man, at the time I was cold, wet, hungry, dirty, but it was a ton of fun. Beats the heck out of daddy daycare
  25. I would have a North East preview.......if I was a Beta tester, but as it is, I will be providing logistic and fire support for when we storm Steve's place
