  1. Hello everybody, So I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, (a long time ago) and I'm told 'License is not for this machine' when I try to start CMSF. When I try to get the license online, it says 'number of uses exceeded' (words to that effect). But the game's not been on more than 2 or 3 successive computers of mine. So, should I uninstall the game and try again, or does it look like I need helpdesk level of assistance for this? Just wanted to ask advice before uninstalling. Any help much appreciated. Want to dust things off and get ready for CMSF2!
  2. If the Chaffee was 'Knocked Out" then it's the damage model involved, nothing crew reaction could affect. Small arms fire in the game which gets through a hatch has a chance of immobilizing or, apparently, knocking out a vehicle. How small that chance is, and whether it's set at a level we'd like, I don't know.
  3. Fraps is a good program for taking screenshots in the game.
  4. I wonder what kind of guns were involved. Light AT guns like 37mm and 45mm can be very hard to spot. Did the tanks suffer morale effects from all the AP hitting their armor? That might reduce their spotting ability- I think.
  5. c3K, I'm glad you liked the video but I can't take credit for the subtitles- they were already there.
  6. Swedish post-war film showing Sherman, Churchill, Panther and some light tanks attempting various obstacles, with explanation. Don't know if this has been posted before, but it's pretty interesting. The Panther comes off quite well.
  7. An ATR can can penetrate the side or rear of StuG's and Pz IV's and similar vehicles, if the the range is not too great. That can mean crew casualties, morale effects, etc. I've seen a StuG crew bail out after their vehicle suffered one side penetration by an ATR.
  8. JFK's 'Bear any burden' statement. I think about this often lately. This is what courage sounds like, not "What's in it for me?"
  9. I agree, you could picture the eagle getting hurt by the rotors, but at least they are probably not rare birds- and they could save a lot of people from getting hurt.
  10. Cool. I saw an article recently about Dutch (I think) police training eagles to take down small drones. Looks like a burgeoning field.
  11. An anecdote about a successful use of the 'slow' command. This was in CMBN but the dynamic is probably the same for all of CMX3 - I sent a small team to move 'slow' into a building. Just behind the building, unknown to me, was a pair of enemy troops apparently hiding in ambush. My men, while still crawling, spotted the enemy and killed them, apparently without ever being spotted themselves. Granted troops moving in buildings benefit from some concealment, but the slow move really 'sealed the deal'. If it had been a 'hunt' move, they might have stopped and regrouped before ever getting LOS from more than one man.
  12. Awesome! Now I don't have to create collections of objects for reference in the corners of maps I'm working on!
  13. I think Vonnegut mentions 37mm guns being used in the Ardennes in Slaughterhouse Five. He wrote they left a big powder stain on the snow when fired, which gave their position away. If my memory is correct. It would be fun, but not vital, to see them in the game.
  14. Or a 2 pdr maybe. Another advantage of keyholing is that if the gun is set back in terrain with very broken lines of sight, the enemy may even have trouble calling arty onto it, as the spotting rounds may well fall out of the spotter's LOS.
  15. Mikey D is correct. The commander's .30 mount on this tank is unusual in that the pedestal (and MG with it I presume) can roll backward to an upside down position and out of the the way. The shield protects it from, I suppose, tree branches snagging it, etc, while it's folded down on the side of the turret. The M5A1's seen without this shield are an earlier model. Some Polish 1st Armored Division M5A1's can be seen with British style smoke projectors mounted on the shield. (Can't remember if they're represented in CMBN). Another interesting thing about this tank is that the co-driver has his own redundant controls on the right side so he can drive the tank without changing seats in the event of the driver becoming indisposed. A good reference is the Squadron M5A1 walk around book.
  16. Maybe they were hitting something I couldn't see, though I think the trees were turned on before. Now one of the batteries at least is giving proper contact bursts...hmm. Well, as Miss Emily Litella used to say, "Never Mind."
  17. In the demo battle December Morning it seems the US 81mm off map mortars are firing only airbursting HE rounds, and there is no option for contact fuse (if that's the right term). Can anyone from BFC give us a bit of a preview about US arty changes, options, etc? It would be a shame if the most common US arty types could no longer be used effectively against buildings, buttoned vehicles, wooden bunkers, etc.
  18. Kohlenklau- The plumage don't enter into it!
  19. I find that the Stug MG gunner is simply unbuttoning to fire when infantry targets of opportunity appear. And I wish they wouldn't do that, because it's often inappropriate for the threat situation. I wish BFC would make the Stug act like other vehicles, and stay buttoned up when ordered.
  20. Firstly, thanks BFC for the great demo and all your hard work on FB! Secondly... in the Chaumont battle, I got a couple of 'upper left hull penetrations' on a Sherman M4A3 76W, and the graphic holes appeared not in the side of the tank, but on the glacis. (They came from the tank's 10 o'clock aspect, so they weren't coming in the side and out the glacis.) Has anybody seen this kind of thing before? I saved the file if anybody is concerned that it might be a bug and wants to look into it.
  21. In '87 we did an air assault mission that combined a TOT mission and the firing of a Dragon ATGM. The rounds arrived within a couple of seconds of the Dragon hitting the 'enemy tank' (actually a dumpster). We had to hustle to get from the LZ to the firing position in time for the TOT. The idea of the TOT was to suppress any reaction by dismounts against our little Dragon detachment (gunner, Plt Sgt, and yours truly the RTO). Probably the most clever and well coordinated thing I ever saw happen in the Army. Ne desit virtus.
  22. I guess it's up to the map designers to provide a long-range environment where the 88's could really shine. And the player's unavoidable ability to make all units react to a gun as soon as even an isolated unit spots it doesn't help. C'est la guerre.
  23. Sometimes you see Bren gunners running around with their pistol drawn. I think JonS is correct, it is a regular situation in the game.
