Play Now!? (use this thread to plan new games)

Sorry, Kim. I'll check this thread more often- no guarantees that i'll be able to play but hopefully i'll catch a game or two. Maybe people could sometimes post a day in advance? I certainly check here at least once a day...

I've installed under Linux, now what?

Well, hopefully you've tried running runClient.sh and if that doesn't work you should get some sort of message that will help. Regardless, there's a couple main problems I've seen. First, make it executable if it's not already. (running chmod +x /home/yourusername/DropTeam/runClient.sh or whatever path to where you installed DT should work.) If the file still doesn't run, then you should open runClient.sh in a text editor, and change the second line to say "cd /home/yourusername/DropTeam/bin or, once again, the path to the "bin" folder in your dropteam install. I'm not so sure about this last step on SUSE, but you can try switching what it says at the top in the first line to #! /bin/bash Good luck!

    Linux Installation

Well, it's not *impossible* to get DT working on 64-bit ubuntu- I was doing pretty well with 64 bit back in 7.10, but later on it got shaky. I did a custom install 32 bit later on for more support, but I'll try installing DT on 64-bit and tell you how it goes if it'd help, it'd be fun to try.

    some questions

I don't have the map editor (it's windows-only and many users are on Linux/Mac,) but you CAN make maps "by hand." In a nutshell, you make a black-and-white .png image as a heightmap for the terrain, then get a .png terrain image to layer over it, then make an rgb .png with red, green, and blue representing different detail textures for close up. Then you make a .scenario file tying them all together, and adding objects like trees, rocks, water, etc. It's complicated but very fun. There's a great guide around here... http://www.battlefront.com/community/showthread.php?t=78165 As to your next 3 questions, 152's basically got it nailed. About dropping "anywhere"- You can, technically drop a unit in any location on the map. The problem is that AA is long-range, easy to deploy, and brutal. It's almost never a good idea to drop in an area covered by AA. This makes it possible, using units like the Bacchus or AA towers, to make large swathes of the map "undeployable." This does limit where you can drop, and becomes an integral part of the game. If you take out AA, it's easy to advance quickly by dropping. Hope this helps, and if you start going online with the full version soon, let us know!

    Linux Installation

Yes, it sounds like you might have 64-bit? Be warned that Dropteam is not always, ahem, perfectly stable on a Linux install. Lately it's been okay for me though.

    Where is everyone?

Hello all. I also haven't been able to make the Sunday or Wednesday games for a while, and I have to say I feel guilty because I ducked out before a lot of you did. I would love to get back playing, and I honestly think I could pull off Sundays again, but so far only 5 people (not counting me) have posted here. I started skipping games when we started getting to only 4 people a round or so; it just didn't get interesting enough without many humans. (Also, I lost some spirit after my ill-fated attempt to install DT on Linux.) If enough people post here and think they can keep playing, I will definitely join in, and I'll be checking the forums or even watching for people online on Sundays. Unfortunately, unless we can muster more than 6 players at most, I think that as much as I hate to say it I will have to also give DropTeam an honorable retirement and look forward to seeing you all when DT2 lands. Sunday Bloody Sunday VS Black Sabbath

Hey Jalinth, long time no see! I hope you can come and join too. Unfortunately, no news in the last year from the programmers. They are, though, apparently working on the sequel or some such...?

gah! I won't be able to play now. I will post a message later if I can play then.

    ZebraTeam!

Well folks, I was really quite happy when DT started working flawlessly on Ubuntu 7.10; unfortunately I've started to have problems, perhaps with the upgrade to 8.04. I used to have problems related to my dual-monitor setup, but those seem to have gone. What remains, however, is artifacting (or something) that I have taken to calling "ZebraTeam." White stripes all over random objects and surfaces (even terrain.) Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone have advice? I'd appreciate any help. I do assume it has something to do with my graphics card...

    ZebraTeam!

Thank you, 152! I have to say, I was really doubtful, but after installing the 64-bit most recent linux driver, messing like crazy with the Ubuntu packages and finally removing the correct files, I am now good to go with DT on this computer. Thanks a ton 152 for the suggestion, I've been missing DT on here for so long! And I'm going to try to make it. Check the forums before you get on- I'll post if I can't be there. Finally, to Marneus, this means I can finally test your mod! I'm really happy, if you couldn't tell. Thanks again 152!

    ZebraTeam!

Thanks- good idea. I will try the Linux drivers, hopefully in time for today's game.

    ZebraTeam!

Uh oh. I took out the card, dusted out the inside of my case, and guess what? No cahnge. I guess it's a driver problem somewhere?

    Some Modding Questions

Dangit, and I agree. Where is my ogre? That mode was going to be awesome.... And Marneus, If you're reading, I am about to resolve my zebra problems, and then I can check the mods you sent.
  16. I was thinking today about a few things. First, it'd been way too long since someone posted in the mod forum. But in the way of real ideas, I did have a couple. First, new gametypes. These might be possible to use workarounds to create without code changes, but I think it would help if, say, Clay could help with how to do this. One thing I thought would make for a very interesting scenario was Escort, in which one has to, say, get a Thor to a certain point on the map. Of course, the game couldn't be very long but I think it would force group fighting, which would be very interesting. What if, say, we could "attach" the objective to a vehicle? Or maybe make it so just one vehicle could gain points at the objective? Or maybe we could give one team a single Cutter to get to the objective with and force them to keep it alive (no Dropships of course.) On the other hand, the enemy being able to just "camp" at the base would make this a rather bad gametype, so one could eliminate all dropships and perch the "defenders" on a steep slope above the escorters so that the defenders couldn't stay at the objective. Another thing I thought of was a new vehicle, which could require code changes as well. Could one, once again, "attach" a deployment zone to a vehicle? Then that vehicle could have allies deploy in and support it. Some problems come up: what if it moves? Perhaps we could have it stay still while acting as a deploy zone. On the topic of new vehicles, I thought along the lines of gunships and aerial attack, and that maybe it would be nice to arm say a Viper (or Dragonfly) with auto targeting weapons. Of course, now, autoguns only can target air units, but I think giving them air-to-ground abilities would make for Dropships that could easily attack and maneuver. Just an idea. Also, I'm starting to miss CZ. Poesel said a while ago that it outlived its use but now I'm starting to disagree. I know Poesel didn't decide to cut out CZ and just spite us all, but if anyone could host a server with mods, I think it would help. There's not much incentive to mod anymore if there's nowhere your mods will show up. And thank you to Poesel for doing it so long! I finally realize what a great thing you did with CZ. Thanks very much! And this brings me to the end of this admittedly long post. I myself think we should get some of the best CZ vehicles, and, if we have good enough ones, put them in the full game. Of course, many units lack polish, and if those are the ones we decide to put in, we can put some modding focus on prettying them up. I think a vote on putting some new vehicles in would be nice.

    The Wednesday Night Fight!

Turns out I may be a bit busy tomorrow morning. 11:00 EST or even 12 probably won't work. I assume you can't play later?

    ZebraTeam!

I guess I'll pull the card today, thanks for the help.

    ZebraTeam!

Well, I think it's a gfx card problem. I just tried playing Freespace 2, and as I got close to enemies I realized that, guess what, they had zebra textures too! I'm kind of glad, because this means I'll be able to fix the problem and it's not DT. Do you think DT will work on a Geforce 6100 integrated gfx? Even on very low settings, if it will work, I can see if DT will work with just the integrated graphics on my board by removing the original card. If there's no zebra-ness, then I'm "lucky" in that all I need to do if buy a new card for stuff to work again.

    The Wednesday Night Fight!

*Throws down glove* All right, Jung, that's it! I know I can't beat you, but, um......................................... Okay, never mind. It's going to be a while till I'm able to play. But on a serious note, we do need to have a tournament methinks. I should I hope be able to make it to some more games these days, though Wednesdays are sort of out. I really want to get back to playing this game again. I think a tournament would accomplish two things: 1) get people playing 2) get people's egos involved, which contributes to 1) So I am now dead serious. Tournament time? And Jung, though I can't fight atm, I should be able to go at it sometime this weekend. Want to set a time? PS- Jung, this in no way is meant to suggest delusions of grandeur. I am willing to get trounced, though- please, let's play.
