  1. Update. I have been using the server based PBEM for Beta Panzer Corps. It works great. You get an email when it is your turn, you log in, play your turn, and add a comment if you like. All your games are listed, and it tells you whose turn it is. You can't replay a turn, so harder to cheat. Also, you don't have to share your email with anyone. A win win, if you ask me.
  2. this is something that has irritated me in the past, would be great to swap.
  3. Seamonkey: The service is free. the money making is the games they sell through the same service.
  4. @ seamonkey - Ask the boys at Steam how it works, they have turned it into another way to make money
  5. I think you could use the server as effectivly as PBEM, but if you can't just do it the way we are now..
  6. I was checking out a new game coming out, and ran into this concerning PBEM. It seems that the games are kept on the server. That way, if you reload (cheat) it is tracked. It also has other benefits, like not having to give people your emai. I think this would be a great idea for Global. Herbert, any chance that battlefront could do something like this? Here is the info I cut and pasted: Using a centralised server provides a lot of advantages: it is very easy to find an opponent (but you can also create a password protected private game in case you want to play with a friend), you will never lose a game in progress, because it is kept by the server, cheating becomes much more difficult because all reloads are tracked by the server, and new features (like tournaments) are being added to server all the time. It also avoids the need to actually send e-mails and attach saved games – this is all handled by the server making this the way to play turn based strategy games.
  7. A ton of them!!! Russian Campaign still my favorite game of all time, still looking for a computer game that is that good. Third Reich, Panzer Leader, Midway, Luftwaffe, Victory in the Pacific, War at Sea, etc. There were many gems there that sadly never made it to the PC. Played a little squad leader, but prefer strategic games.
  8. thanx for your response. Agreed Mr. Cater, that there is still some possibilities for randomness, but it won't be as bad. This system worked great for all the old Avalon Hill games that I played as a kid many years ago. @ Jollyguy: this would be an option that you could freely turn off, so it should not interfere with your games.
  9. Mr. Cater, would it be possible to add an option to have historical weather? How about both sides having the same weather for each turn? My last game, my Japanese lost the war because of a giant battle. For 4 (I kid you not) straight turns, the allies had clear and the Japanese had rain. It was enough to completely destroy the Japanese navy and change the course of the war. Eeven my opponent agrees that it finished the game for the Japanese. Ok, probably I should have ran, but I had level 5 air and 5 carriers present, and I knew if I could just get my shots in... I have seen many instances less dramatic than this (in russia for example) where one player clearly got the better of weather for an extended period of time and it ruined the game. thanx for any consideration p.s. historical research would also be cool! Example here, I have a current game where my Russians have level 0 antitank in 1944 despite 3 chits in there since late 41.
  10. I agree 100%. Although I love the game, losing Italy and France as major powers was a terrible choice in my opinion. France and italy should have there own research etc. I think I remember reading it was "limited by the game engine". Too bad the game engine wasn't tweaked. I'm playing a game now and have level 5 italian tanks and level 5 italian air, and of course level 3 italian subs. The game is great, but this could make it better.
  11. I have had games ruined by this as well. I would like to see an option to choose historical research (but this would need an adjustmenent for money as well. Same thing goes for weather. I would love an option to use historical weather.
  12. I have no idea what forces would be historical. I still have plenty of money to buy all the japanese subs, dd's, and air. The payoff for taking china (big bucks, no chinese front, threat to russia) worth the trouble for sure. @ Wushuki - Good input, but I play much different from you. I take china with no tanks and minimal air (just use it for knocking entrenchment and countering chinese air). Both ways work, but unless you really want to go after russia, I would prefer to have the extra naval units over tanks.
  13. Thanx for the input, Mr. Cater, and others. It would be interesting to see how often other players have China fall. Hoping for more imput. dave
  14. bump for some input. would like to know how Mr. Cater feels.
  15. Another bug, although I don't have the turn. Allies took neutral Persia. Later, the germans dropped a paratrooper and took it back. When the allies returned to retake it, the germans saw them coming and just surrendered. Pretty sure this is not supposed to happen.
  16. I checked online, Japan did not get very far in China during the war. Just about every game that I have played, even when I'm against players better than I, China falls like clockwork. I think something is wrong here, am I alone on this? It obviously hasn't been addressed by any of the patches...
  17. I would play, but is there a standard for ability? I'm not that good.
  18. Good advice, all of it. I'm off to try! Thanx dave
  19. No, I prefer to think. When I play PBEM, I have a personal rule that I do nothing without looking at everything first-all fronts-research-diplo, etc. I did not do this in TCP/IP But we were playing early in the game, so turns went faster than they would in say 1943. Still way too slow for me.
  20. Thanks for the advice so far. Minty, if you are right, then I must wonder how 3 patches have failed to address this????
  21. Every game I have against equal opponent is ruined because the russians get walked on by the Germans (happens to both of us). We have tried many things, lining up the russians on the frontier, back around moscow/riga, and in between. I have even tried allied attacks in italy, france, vichy, spain, etc. to take the heat off, to no avail. Current game, my russians have level 2 inf. and anti tank, convoy lines open almost the whole game and ran at max, yet all the russian troops I build are just fodder for the experianced Germans. Allies doing well elsewhere, holding africa, building in England, but by winter of 43, the russians are backed up well behind Moscow, and still falling back. My allies can't help until winter clears. Is anyone willing to share some russian tips?
  22. I tried it once (1.2 patch) and it worked fine. Problem is, you have to spend all day, takes forever, gets boring waiting for the other player. I would think the time in McDonalds would kill you from just breathing the greasy air for that long One good thing we did figure out, though, is that you can alt tab away during the other players turn, then come back, and it will show everything he did while you were gone happening fast, like an e-mail game. That was cool.
  23. I'm not suggesting sea zones and all that, although they are one way of handling the problem (I remember them from Avalon Hill games). All I'm saying is that the strength of Battleships vs Cruisers should be tweaked to avoid battles like the one I had. @ Seamonkey. Not saying it could never happen, just that it never did, and hence should not happen, except perhaps very rarely, in the game.
