  1. "You'll be able to copy the CD as much as you want, but won't be able to play the game without verification." About %^$$%#^ time I saw more signs of a company that had more brain cells than titles Glad to hear you are using methods that don't say "screw you" to a paying customer. Yeah serials ain't perfect, but serials don't normally translate into "I ain't paying for your game but will download it, because you use a well known obnoxious method of copy protection". But as you guys are warming to digital download, I am encouraged. Was beginning to tire of thinking the only company that has a clue was Matrix Games. Glad to hear BF can be added to the list of companies that actually have a clue what they are doing (beyond being able to make the game initially). It's simply not enough to know how to code a game so the armour rating of an old tank is perceived as correct. Releasing a product properly also takes skill.
  2. All things considered, not all of us have the "store next door", or down the street or anywhere in town for that matter. Meanwhile, I live in the modern world (can't speak for everyone), and I would rather by 21st century products in a 21st century fashion. Only place I use plastic is with online transactions. And thanks to an article about a recent Citibank disaster, I have no intention of beginning to trust the retail scene with anything but actual cash." "i dont understand why battlefront does not offer its products in retail. It would sell more," A misconception. Stores expect price reductions, massive price reductions. And then when your non mainstream product fails to sell 30 copies on the day they first put it on the shelf, poof your trash is in the bargain bin. I have no gripe with Battlefront wanting to always get their XX dollars consistently for their games. Digital though cuts out the XX dollars plus shipping, plus entering foreign countries duties and all that other nonsense that often leaps out to bite some persons out of the blue. With digital, you KNOW what it will cost you, and you KNOW it won't cost anything else. No surprises.
  3. The second it goes digital download (as it appears it might) number of copies available will no longer be relevant
  4. I'm all for humour, any that know me know I am rarely serious longer than 10 minutes eh. But guys, if all you can offer is the last few posts, do you seriously ever expect to ever be taken serious later by anyone around here? If the last few posts is any indication, then there is NO reason for ANYone to ever initiate anything approximating a serious discussion on any topic eh. Fortunately I found out (after the fact) that they can do digital download for the original SC. So now all we need to do (I would assume) is insist they don't take forever to add SC2 to that list. But if you guys want to resume your line of thought postings, consider this my last contribution to this thread.
  5. Hmm just saw this. Ok I guess this is going to muck up some of my earlier comments. Ok so the tough question, how long will it be before you add the new SC2 game to the list of digital downloads? Surely adding another title is just a matter of adding another title. You must have already done all the ground work with Direct2Drive.com in the setting up of the SC game download.
  6. That's the low tech thought process actually. The modern viewpoint would reply with "I'd rather read my wargame pdf file on my hand held electronic data device of choice". The best looking manuals I have read, I read off of a disc actually.
  7. Oops double posts, I trust the relevant person can escort this one to the round file.
  8. I know this has been raised in one capacity or another, but I just want to put my vote in for it (I assume it won't be changing though). Digital download is a good "option", I KNOW it has strengths as well as weaknesses. It's the manner that I increasingly buy my limited pipeline, niche market based wargames that are not about to be retail shelf friendly products any time soon. Digital download in a swoop, eliminates several issues. It trashes shipping costs nicely, it makes a sale a matter of hours not days. The methods of copy potection are more appealing to me as well. It results in more positives than negatives. I don't care if the price remains the same if I get the perks of "buy it now". I am not that obssessed with a box, and manuals while good (about 1 time in 4 actually) really are not why I buy or not buy a game. I have bought more games with "lousy" manuals, than games with manuals that were worth getting. And as for the cd and or dvd, well really feel sympathy for anyone that still can't burn a data file to a humble dvd let alone cd. I also feel for those not on broadband. It's as common as rain here though in Ontario, land of low cost unlimited hi tech service. Wish you were here hehe. So come on Battlefront, lets start thinking og going digital download. Even Matrix Games has more and more demos these days

  10. Secretly laughing. A: you already know me I didn't just get here. B: got married 20 years ago, the only chicks in my life are the ones I produced from scratch. C: had good sense to pick a wife that while not a wargamer, doesn't insist I pick her or my wargames. Thus, "significant other" lamentations is someone else's problem. D: I just don't care for online play, too many choices that are local. That, and I prefer to play wargames as challenges, thus I prefer to play the game solo me on both sides when needed. An AI is not required to do this. AIs are for people that can't handle playing with themselves (Yes Kuni, I am aware of your legendary quote ). While I am sure I could suggest many things for HC for his game, I think I will wait to offer suggestions for the 2.1 patch which can be added to the usual unfortunate, but not entirely unlikely tweaks that manage to vex all game makers. HC, have you at least contemplated a global version as a later evolution of the game? I am assuming to do global, some further design evolutions are required eventually. Given a choice of Matrix Games's Computer World In Flames (which friends are promising will appear before 2006 expires), or a global extrapolation of you much more user friendly experience (I assume your SC2 will feature a great interface like SC1 has), I am inlined to think I would prefer your attempt. I have GGWaW but I am just not entirely in love with it. And I don't like HoI2. As far as I am concerned, global grand strategy still hasn't been given a classic for this century yet. Desert Dave, you do realise that prose style is often a lot too much like work to read sometimes eh Your posts usually have a good message, but I sometimes lose track of it trying to read it.
  11. Considering all the hoopla, silliness, pleading, and endless pick mine request lists, just want to let HC know some of us are just waiting for the game, and realise it will get here soon enough. Likely will be playing the demo before the real deal, only because it is likely I will have my hands on the demo sooner, and why wait (I like going to the market and trying samples too ). I am not numbered among those that think the game is over priced. I am not numbered among those that think that game will be unbuyable if it hasn't got my long list of "requests" added in. I am a "hex" fan, but I've loved non hex using games in my time. I am certainly expecting to see what comes out of the fan base after they get their hands on the editor. I think SC (the original) is a great game. Yes, I AM aware of all the gripes, but most of those gripes are not mine. I am not in a hurry to be playing you guys online (so don't bother waiting). I also couldn't care less if the AI sucks (not planning to pay it much). I am basically a solo wargamer that also likes Hotseat to play locals. AI what AI? Thanks HC for saving us from real time games (few are worth getting free let alone paying for). I'd list my wargaming past so all would know I am not a newb, suffice it to say, I was likely wargaming before most of you, and likely have played all the "great" wargames most use as a yard stick. ASL and A3R to name two. So HC, after the logical decent pause to rest, got any plans for something in a totally different vein?
