The above is not speculative and is routine for an election year.  What is also routine is the sitting President trying to avoid having gas prices spike during the election cycle.

Therefore, my guess is that Biden is trying to head off any sort of possibility that Ukraine's strikes might have a ripple effect that may drive up gas prices or be used as a false narrative as to why gas prices are whatever they are.

But still, even if the Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries was having an effect on gas prices, stopping them won't have any effect because the Russians can just as easily themselves halt production when the time is right if they want to effect rising gas prices during an election.

The logic of these narratives doesn't hold up.

  2. These recent videos of Russian armoured assaults are insane ! 🤯

I mean, I ( and almost everyone on this forum ) would be absolutely messing myself with worry if I even tried that in CM in a WW2 context. Are the Russian generals on drugs ?

Maybe it's just because I tend to be very logical, but I cannot wrap my head around this kind of behaviour after 2 (two !) years of seeing this sort of thing get smashed.

Well, I don't have a ban stick and you didn't answer my queries either.
Barely even queries, more like requests for elaboration. I'd like to think I was polite about it.

It's back on page 3361 if you care to have a go.

On to the statements according to my current understanding of the world:

    1.partially true partially false

    2. disproven by brics

    3. sure

4.partially true partially false in part depending on what one considers a provocation (not universal; see individuals per inverse Plato's Republic) and what one considers violations of treaties and ethnic cleansing

5.I am not going to look up the UN definition of Genocide, a bridge too far, sorry, I am not a human rights lawyer

    6.purely speculative

So, sfhand - Steve asked some questions and you waved them away. Perhaps you would clarify - for example. for Steve's Point

    1. The Putin regime is a brutal dictatorship that has increasingly less tolerance for anything that questions its legitimacy

And you decided the answer was

    1.partially true partially false

Now I'd love to hear what part of the Putin regime is tolerant or not a brutal dictatorship  ? Because if the statement is partially false, then there must be some tolerance shown. I ( we here ) have not seen any, but perhaps you have access to info we do not ?

    1. Russia unilaterally launched a war against Ukraine, unprovoked and without any rational justification.

    Again, you go half half

4.partially true partially false in part depending on what one considers a provocation (not universal; see individuals per inverse Plato's Republic) and what one considers violations of treaties and ethnic cleansing

Apparently you think that Russia DID have some provocation, could you state what you believe it is ? Otherwise you're just throwing in "partially false" to try and justify the war somehow.
What treaties are you referring to ? And ethnic cleansing ?

You imply these are involved somehow, but again, fail to tell us what/how they inform your opinion.

So c'mon, this forum is a pretty vigorous place for peer review - give us some facts/info to back up your position - everyone else here has.

... It will be very interesting to see what the Kremlin says about the campaign against its refining capacity once it is done with its fake election silliness. I can see at least a possibility that Putin goes all in threatening nuclear retaliation over them once it doesn't interfere with the everything is fine theme he has been pushing for this so called campaign.

Although they then have to admit/prove that it's Ukrainian and not a "smoking accident".

If those USVs bring UAS with them those nets will have to cover the entire ship.  I am interested in a few ideas beat nets.  First are very small unmanned bots who swim in and manually cut the nets up.  Second is tandem attacks.  Third are standoff EFP which will simply blow through the nets.

Surely nets will simply drive the USV's to have a terminal underwater phase ?

I used to hate war games where there were “rules” on what we could or couldn’t do. History is full of events wher an opponent didn’t “play by the rules” and the other got smeared because they didn’t think the “inferior” opponent was smart enough to be innovative enough to beat the crap out of them.

i’ve never understood the concept unless it was structured specifically to determine is something was or was not possible, and then to determine the best possible defense against it. One doesn’t do that by designing a training operation and putting rules in place to ensure one gets the results one wants. If one is trying to train some one to “think on their feet,” one doesn’t do that by saying “Oh, but you can’t do this or that. This is one of the reasons one should play CM missions with as many different opponents as possible. No one thinks or sees the the same way. IF EVERYONE’S THINKING THE SAME THING, SOMEONE’S NOT THINKING!

The classic is the Japanese Midway wargames where the Opposing force hid their carriers nearby ( IIRC it was even almost exactly where irl the American carriers were positioned ) and thrashed the attacking force.

That was deemed impossible, the opfor guys were chastised and it was replayed for the Japanese "win".
And then in reality ... 🤪

Micro-missile might work, but I suspect a shotgun would too if one could get in range.  That or you simply go with ramming.  But as you note.  The solutions are pretty damned expensive, while the threat gets cheaper.

Surely if you can get close enough to ram, you could fire some sort of short range net over it.

But why not continue the WWI analogies that we've seen all over this conflict - get hordes of combat flight sim pilots to fly hunter drones. With some natty sensors to aid the Mk1 eyeball, that could be effective, since most of the target drones are looking at the ground, again, a la WWI observers who never saw who shot them down.

Why three and not one or ten? This is not a an high school or college level test you know. Where is the blue book for heaven's sake. So here is a start: take your three statements print them out, go let some young warriors read and laugh at them while we empower the warrior to win the war in several weeks. It's not as complicated as you write about. Firepower has a language all its own. And is not verbose. People have always attacked me first and I just come back with a short retort that frustrates them. I do so with precision not multi worded cluster bombs.

You do so with the most nebulous position you can possibly take, if you even define it at all.

Exhibit A : "while we empower the warrior to win the war in several weeks".
Easy to say, but none of your posts have addressed how this would be done in the slightest. Whereas The_Capt has unpicked stuff down to the platoon level and not pulled any punches on where we ( the "West" ) might be coming up short in our understanding or analyses.

I guess I'm joining the muters, there's only so many times you can scroll past yet another post. I guess that will also make me "wrong". 🤪

Oops - posted a page behind "current" and redundant immediately. Apologies.

Officially, there is a promise that they will note and log all areas they hit with these things, but experience from Iraq shows that doesn't happen in practice.

    .

But remember, it wasn't Iraqi's using them.

I suspect the Ukrainians will be a bit more careful on this, having somewhat greater motivation.

Russian drones are having a field day. Losses must be much higher than the footage we've witnessed. I don't get the complete lack of AA umbrella of UA offensive

Or they are using every drone they have and in a day or two they'll have nothing. We just don't know.

Plus, maybe they've had that kind of footage all along, but now that it's Western kit, it's worth them posting it.

Also, remember that all this is Russian footage and everything they post will have at least some element of trying to convince everyone that the offensive is failing.

kinda off topic, but I wonder if BFC is planning any offensive actions now that the ground it dry?  As in new releases?  In support of UKR offensives.  There's probably lots of influential military minds in RU that would be very distracted by new CM content, just in time for UKR to strike.  ...

If the war has proved anything, it's that NO ONE in the Russian Army plays CM !

So, it seems Bakhmut has finally fallen.

At least according to latest update from Deepstate, the last highrise buildings have now been coloured in red.

It seems the very definition of a pyrrhic victory.

Hah, if it's anything like the asphalt factory, it has to fall at least 3 or 4 more times before it's a done deal.

    KaChunk!

I could have a go, but then again, I never actually got my degree and your question is poorly phrased - I'm a Roman history guy, but you want a Byzantine history guy 🤣

If you are in Hamburg, Travemuende or surroundings, try to get hold of a nice portion of Nordseekrabben (North Sea shrimps). Either served with scrambled eggs or on dark bread. You can´t get something more delicious than that.

I have been promised turbot in Travemünde, but will try to fit your recommendation in.

    Damn you man!

I'm on holiday in Hamburg, Travemünde and Berlin in 3 weeks time and already salivating about currywurst, bratkartoffeln and schweinhaxe.

    Now I can't wait!

Edit : sorry, very off topic, I know, but German food is so awesome.

Additionally, RUS have gained in positional terms. They are on the 3 sides of Bakhmut on the high ground so crossfire opportunities are available.

    ...

I question this bit particularly - if they have artillery on 3 sides of Bakhmut, 2 of those sides would have artillery pieces so ludicrously close to Ukrainian lines that you could almost use mortars for CB.

All info we've seen lately is that the Russians are keeping their artillery as far back as they can to avoid as much CB as they can.

Oh goodie, another war with a begrudging and resentful partner we are supposed to arm to the teeth, be continuously told we suck and are doing it wrong, and then enjoy the post war sh#t show as we have to sink billions more into a resentful nation to keep it propped up.

Seriously man, we get the frustration but why not follow the lead from your political leadership and offer a simple “thank you” now and again?

To be fair, in 10+ months, Haiduk has almost never "bubbled over", I think we could cut him (and others) a wee bit more slack.

Really, we should all do that with each other - sure we all have different opinions and that can lead to arguing, but we're all on the same side, so we should take a few deep breaths and try not to get irked at disagreement, rather than reaching for the ignore button.

Outside of needing eye bleach because of the lack of your traditional warning, my key takeaway is this paragraph:
“Russian officers described companies in the Kherson Sector as consisting of between six and eight men each. Companies should deploy with around 100 personnel.”

One cannot manoeuvre a company with 8 men.  You can't even coordinate their efforts, because they aren't integrated into a larger whole.  If in fact companies are down that far, AFAIK the only solution is to fold the remaining men into an actual company-sized unit.

    6 to 8 men !

Fold them into a Platoon, never mind a Company !
