  1. It sounds like you're doing fine with something like I'm considering - although my cash won't be accumulated for a few more months, so I expect I'll get something equivalent, but with a more powerful graphics card for about the same price. Except in pounds, since the USA seems to enjoy cheaper computing than the UK. Thanks, now I can look forward to CMSFing on the move
  2. I'm going to be buying a laptop in the next few months, and after a distressing experience several years ago, in which my then laptop just wound't run CMBB or CMAK due to some graphics card problem, I though I'd research this time to ensure I can play CMSF without trouble. So, CMSF-laptoppers - anything in particular I should make sure I get? Anything to avoid? My laptop will be more powerful than my current PC, which runs CMSF okay, but are there any laptop-specific quirks I need to know about?
  3. OK, reinstalled, all mods, scenarios, saved games etc back where they should be...game works fine, just played a PBEM turn. Conclusion: Gremlins.
  4. Thanks slug, I emptied my Z folder, unfortunately. In fact, I just removed it entirely and its still crashing - but I'm off work today, so I'll reinstall. Then I can return your PBEM file!
  5. CMSF has just started crashing for me when I either try to start a new battle, or load save games or PBEM files. It gets through the loading screen but then at the mission briefing or password screen (for PBEM) I get dumped back to desktop with the generic "...has encountered a problem and needs to close" error. It was working yesterday, and all I've changed since is swapping my euro texture mods for desert ones. Could this be causing problems? It doesn't get fixed if I empty my Z folder to try with default textures. I'm running dual 2.21 Athlon 4400+ processors, 3Gb RAM and a Radeon X800 3D card with Catalyst 8.6. I was running this before, when everything worked. Anyone else had a similar problem? Any ideas on a fix, or should I just dig out my disc copy and try a fresh install?
  6. I've seen this too. I'm pretty sure this happens for all troops who should have pistols. I guess the animations and models for pistols haven't been included/finished?
  7. When I edit the hotkeys.txt file to use only my chosen "direct" commands, CMSF crashes as soon as I try and use any of my chosen hotkeys. Replacing hotkeys.txt with the original makes the problem disappear. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Are they case sensitive? Do I need to ensure some or all commands have a hotkey assigned? I'm avoiding using all the keys I should avoid, as far as I know.
  8. Thank you for your thorough reply, I'll try the long shot idea. It looks like I've got another incentive to buy another computer, probably.
  9. I'm trying to install CMBO:SE on my laptop. it installs fine, and starts up fine, but I can only get as far as the scenario menu without the menu freezing; as soon as I click on a scenario, and then "play scenario", it freezes and doesn't progress to the briefing. If I alt-tab out and back in, it will progress on, but will then freeze once I try to go to the menu anfter the briefing. alt-tabbing will (eventually) get me as far as the actual playing part, but I'll just have blackness where tanks, troops, terrain, etc. should be. I have a functioning in-game bar with buttons, but no way of playing. If I click on the hotkeys button, the hotkey list appears, but will not vanish when I click it. again, alt-tabbing makes the hotkey list vanish, but doesn't help with my lack of 3D visuals. I've searched these forums as much as I can, and read the online help, but the only thing that seemed promising-turning off anti-aliasing-I can't do with my system. I am running: Windows XP (home edition) Intel Pentium ii 1.1GHz 240 MB RAM 16MB Trident CyberBlade XP Ai1 (someone else on this forum was haviing trouble with this video card I think, but not the same trouble as me). Forgive me if i've left out any vital details, computers are soething of a forgein language to me. If anything else could be of help to know, I'll try and find it out. I've tried updating my video drivers, and no luck. Any ideas on what I can try to make this wonderful game work? If it matters, I've also tried the CMBB demo, with the same results and trying to run CMBO.
