  1. I understand the argument that ships are "scouring" the sea as an excuse for slow naval movement. However, The Russian Baltic Fleet sailed to their doom at Tsushima in 7 months in 1905. In this game a carrier task force sailing from the UK to Singapore around Africa takes longer by far. This same task force had a cruising speed faster the the maximum speeds in the Russian fleet. How would you reproduce the Yorktowns dash from Coral Sea to Pearl Harbor to Midway? You can't because of the slow ship speeds. I'm not certain but I'm pretty sure the IJN only needed a game turn to get from the Kuriles to Pearl Harbor. I know the Russian Fleet needed to stop and coal but the carrier would also need to stop and fuel. If the argument is that the current speeds are for balance then well so be it because I consider the balance pretty good but the naval movement is very week.
  2. Look up and watch the youtube video Carbon Leaf - The War Was In Color
  3. Hey I have a great idea! Why don't you give your brother the copy you were trying to sell Kinky? He wouldn't have to wait and you'd get rid of the game you don't want. Then the rest of the Forum could get back to game play issues. And the poor guys building the server and web store could work without needless harassment and get things running again.
  4. Level 0 = Panzer I Level 1 = Panzer II "Luchs" Level 2 = Panzer III Level 3 = Panzer IV Level 4 = Panzer VI "Tiger" Level 5 = Panzer VI Mk 2 "Königstiger" (= KingTiger) I think the Level 1 = PZ38/35 taken from the Czechs at least they look that way to me Level 5 = Panther V it looks more like a Panther than King Tiger Arguably the Panther was a better tank than the King Tiger, faster, gun was better than the Tiger 1's 88 and produced in greater numbers. Of course I don't know for sure and the King Tiger could be the Level 5 but the turret shape just looks more like a Panther.
  5. Steven482, Shoot me an email at taz@swva.net and I'll play as either side. I'm looking forward to it Baron
  6. The loss in readiness addresses the complexity and confusion of moving such large bodies of troops over rail. You have to make sure you know what is loaded where, where it is going, what order to load it, where to unload it, where to leave it sitting if it changes rails, coordinate its pick up by another train if it changes rails, stage it at the other end, get the actual troops from point A to point B ect ect ect....... Sound a little bit overwhelming? Now imagine doing this for every Company in that Corps or Army that you are moving. The point is that the readiness loss reflects the unit not being able to just detrain and roll into combat. Of course units could and did do exactly that but they were not as effective as they would have been without the movement they had just endured thus the readiness loss reflects this "lag" that units experience on a movement of that scale.
  7. Well I've purchased my copy! Now I will stare at the Battlefront site until we can download it. How many times can I hit the F5 key a minute???????
  8. Bowenw, If you mean the Talson Software or Matrix redo then the answer is yes. I'm thrashing a Yank on the field at Praire Grove (which is a scenario of Shiloh) right now. I've been away from the titles for awhile though so I feel fortunate to be winning it. I win as much in those games as I do at SC2 and variants
  9. Hubert, That is affirmative it did dive under the ice, do you need me to send a turn?
  10. I was just playing a game and my Soviet sub avoided an attack from the German Baltic fleet and went under the icecap. Then it continued to damage the convoy line to Germany. 1) Is this by design or a bug? On a aside note I love this sub! It has inflicted several sp losses on the Germans and still is kicking! I'm sure my opponent isn't as happy with them
  11. DD and Ludi, I like what both of you have proposed especially the increase in speed of naval units. The increase of damage on convoy routes is interesting - how many games have been played using the new settings? On naval bombardment I agree and have suggested this change for a long time. On a different note if a ship can shore bombard why can't it fire in defense of a ground unit being attacked by other ground units? The caliber of the naval guns certainly out ranged that of land artillery units and yet they can fire in defense of a land unit. I always wondered about this but since I am now agreeing that this bombardment is already too powerful I'm not sure why I'm bringing it up now............. I am looking forward to the game changes that are coming though!
  12. Jersey John, Once again you are correct! The officer that supposedly yelled at him to get down was future Supreme Court Justice - Oliver Wendell Holmes I'm not sure is this was ever proven beyond a shadow of a doubt but it is pretty commonly told. You are going to need a driver after all the jugs you've won!!
  13. Hyazinth von Strachwitz, You are correct, he waited a day after appearing before Washington and the delay allowed the Union 6th Corps to rush troops to the capital. During the attack on the second day these veteran troops easily beat off the Confederate skirmishers. Now for a clue as to the identity of the Unionist - he was a very tall man from a border state.
  14. A bonus jug for the answer to these questions: Who was the Captain who told the above Unionist "Get down you damned fool"? What was he later famous for?
  15. This one is bit of a softball but here we go: Who was the Confederate General that commanded troops that actually attacked Washington during the war? What Unionist exposed himself to Confederate fire during the battle?
  16. Jersey John, You are correct sir! Longstreet was not killed though he survived until 1904. The really weird thing about him getting shot was it was under almost the exact same circumstances as when Jackson was shot, by his own men while returning to his own lines after scouting the Union lines and he was within 5 miles of the spot where Jackson was shot and almost exactly a year later. On of your earlier guesses was AP Hill, he was killed the last day of the siege of Petersburg. He was riding to rally his troops and rode up on a Union force that had broken through his lines. He obviously was not aware his lines were breached. What a shame he died a week before the surrender of Lee to Grant.
  17. Jersey John, Why do I know that name Jim Boggs? he sounds very familiar to me. May he rest in peace
  18. Jersey John, J.E.B. Stuart is a good guess and he was killed in May of 1864 but it was on a different battlefield at Yellow Tavern. Stuart was often referred to as Lee's eyes and was one of the 3 Generals Lee depended on most during the war but he is not who I had in mind. Yellow Tavern is quite some distance from the battlefield at Chancellorsville and the Wilderness.. Another note: Stuart was a cavalry commander and would never have been considered to replace Jackson who was a Corps Commander (Infantry) in the ANV. He was also born not far from where I live here in Floyd. The next county over is Patrick County and the county seat is located in - you guessed it Stuart, he was born in Ararat which is very near the North Carolina border. Ararat is about a 45 minute drive from her to the Southeast. 45 minutes to the Northeast is the home of Jubal Early another of the Generals in Gray and one of my three personal favorites. One more clue: Jackson - Lee's right arm Stuart - Lee's eyes and ears ????????? - his old warhorse
  19. With me being a "hillbilly" I can't afford some exotic sports car but we do make some great shine up here in the mountains. Maybe a virtual mason jar for correct answers? Another clue to my second question. Jackson was the first officer shot on the field by his own men and this second General was also shot on the same field almost exactly a year later. The General was his "right" arm the second was his ????????
  20. JerseyJohn, I'm full of useless information when it comes to the Civil War I was just guessing Hitler because it is so obviously not him that it might just possibly be him.... I think???? If I were a modder it would be great to see a Civil War mod I just wish I had the time to devote to it. What part of FL you in? I lived in Port Charlotte for almost 13 years and I don't miss the heat and humidity. I like it up here in my mountains although this winter has been very rough so far. I still have snow on the round from before Christmas and it has been in the 50's the last couple of days.
  21. Howdy all, Like many gamers here I cut my teeth on AH games in the late 70's. I loved the SSI games and eventually stumbled on SC as a downloadable demo and I've been hooked ever since. I live in Floyd County which is in SW Virginia and have been a huge Civil War buff for years having grown up here. I am a prior service Marine and now serve in the VAARNG. I work for the local school system doing computer work and it is really nice since my commute is less than a mile To check out Floyd look up Mabry's Mill or the Blue Ridge Parkway and you'll get a good idea of what it is like around here. Finally I think I have the worst winning percentage of any of the SC players all time! Just ask anyone I've played - I'll get them next time though
  22. I have no idea who the highest ranking reserve officer was - the obvious guess would be Hitler
  23. Actually the Gen. killed in May of 1863 by a doctor was Gen Earl Van Dorn. Apparently the doctor did not appreciate the Gen calling on his wife while he was not at home Jackson did die in May of 1863 but it was from pneumonia which was a complication from the amputation of his arm 8 days earlier. But a very good guess!! Speaking of Jackson what other Confederate General was almost killed by his own troops a year later on the same battleground (4 miles distant)?
  24. Next question: What was the name of the Confederate General killed in May of 1863 by a Doctor and why?
