  1. "School of hard knocks", I think it was called. And I agree it was one of the hardest I've played so far. As a matter of fact I eventually got a minor victory on this battle but there was so much allied blood spilled that it did not taste like a victory at all...
  2. Indeed, your soldiers can't use enemy weapons. But I've recently seen a german soldier pick up an italian machinegun in CMFI. Thus a CM soldier may use weapons from his allies. Although I've never witnessed this with Americans and British soldiers, I guess that it works the same in CMBN.
  3. I suggest you have a look at the Byte Battles website : http://www.kretsen.nu/bytebattler/bb_download.html There you will find some small H2H Quick battles that are relatively balanced. My two favourites are "Byte town" and "Byte depot".
  4. Thank you Battlefront ! Just one question : with this patch, will portable AT weapons be able to fire from inside buildings ?
  5. At the end of a Byte Battle I had a look at my opponent's troops and stumbled upon those guys : This german machinegunner reminded me of an old song from "The Specials" : " " Now what on earth is his comrade wondering about ? Any ideas ?
  6. Yum yum, thanks for sharing ! Can't wait to try that myself. By the way, it the next CMBN patch going to include those game changes ?
  7. I haven't been able to buy Market garden yet, so could some of you lucky fellas tell us how the game feels like now when close assaulting tanks or firing a bazooka/Schreck from a building ? I'm curious because this looks like game changing features to me yet nobody wrote about that on the forum since the release of MG
  8. Ttt ttt ttt ! I beg to differ here, Sir. When learning a foreign language one will always start with the formal stuff. But I agree with our spanish speaking friend here : if you really want to get some decent fun, you'll have to learn some very informal stuff next . Otherwise, how could you really appreciate, say, HBO's "The Wire" or "Treme" ? Or any kind of US movie with some "street language" in it ? I'm not saying you should aim for "fluency" in it but at least pick up some words or expressions here and there. BTW there is a fascinating website for that : http://www.urbandictionary.com/. I can spend hours browsing it. A truely fabulous gold mine it is, if you don't shy away from profanity. See "Bathroom stalemate" for example. Isn't that sweet ? For me, making jokes and cursing in a foreign language is the very best one can hope for !
  9. Screenshots were taken from the Byte Battle Byte_depot [see : http://www.kretsen.nu/bytebattler/], but its designer says the map has been extracted from Peter Wenman's Brencourt map. I'm also using Tanks a Lot's excellent CMBN Barns & Buildings mods.
  10. All right, I'll concede you that :-) CMBN is a truely amazing game. Edit : it's more than a simple game : I think we can safely speak about a true work of art, don't you think ?
  11. So, Poesel, you now know all there is to know about sound naming in CMBN. Can we expect a modified version of your Python program any time soon ?
  12. So Helmut made his last stand : he spread his MG42 and opened up on the nearest Amis. Less than a second after his first burst he caught a bullet... So long Helmut & end of the story !
  13. Funny how you grogs got it all wrong :-) Helmut shot first... and missed ! Joey did not fire at all : he changed his mind and buggered off. He should have know better because Helmut reloaded swiftly and shot him dead ! End of the story for Joey. Then Helmut spotted a bunch of US soldiers running toward his position. He decided to get out of the wood asap. Alas, the german outpost was overwhelmed and GIs were pretty much everywhere... [to be continued]
  14. Interestingly enough, the french version of the Wikipedia pages you cited gives a more balanced point of view on the subject. For those interested (and able to read french !), I found a recent article (2007) published in a french contemporary history periodical by an italian historian. His goal is to present a synthesis of the current italian point of view on the subject : http://www.cairn.info/revue-vingtieme-siecle-revue-d-histoire-2007-1-page-47.htm He considers probable the figure of 12.000 women raped given by the Unione Donne Italiane. English abstract : During the Italian campaign, 1943 and 1944, the French expeditionary corps colonial troops were responsible for many acts of violence against the Italian civilian population. Theft, armed robbery, plunder, and especially rape were very frequent. At the beginning they were isolated acts committed by single individuals, and punished by the French or Anglo-American allied authorities. During the 1944 victorious summer offensive that made it possible to cross the Gustav line in the southern Lazio, the French troops garnered from their superiors a relative liberty of action, leading to rapes. During the 1950s, the Unione Donne Italiane counted about twelve thousand victims of sexual violence. This communist women’s organization tried to obtain compensation for these women victims of the French expeditionary corps. This sexual violence was apparently tolerated as a “disagreeable” consequence of the war habits of irregular corps such as Moroccan goumiers [soldiers from a goum, an auxiliary military body of native North Africans, under French officers’ authority]. They were also a clear message to Italians, particularly the men. The humiliation and sexual outrage against their wives served to reassert their status as the conquered during this conflict.
  15. Sorry for that ! Hmmm, a modder or BF could answer that, but I'm afraid I can't . However, is this really important for you to know ? As a librarian I'm used to search catalogue and database on the root of a word. To do that I use truncation. For exemple, mathem* will give you as a result mathematic, mathematical, mathematics, mathematician, mathematicians etc. I was wondering if you could use something similar in Python to match a BF original soundfile (root) with its variants in soundmods (root*).
  16. Thanks ! Adding a "sound" subfolder did the trick ! Now in the html output file I noticed than some categories of sounds for the mod were not displayed. After investigating the files, I found out that in my soundmod I have several alternate versions for the same sound. For example : explosion a 0, explosion a 1, explosion a 3, etc., whereas in "0bfc" (original BF sounds) there is just one : explosion a. Is it possible for you to make these variants appear in the html output file despite the filenames being slightly different (but sharing a same root) ?
  17. Poesel, can you help me out ? I installed Python 3x on my Win 7 PC. Inside the Pyhton33 directory, I created a specific folder "CMBN_SOUNDCOMP", in which I put : -your files and folders (downloaded from https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8811801/soundmoderator.zip) - a "0bfc" folder with BF sounds in it (extracted from the original brz files) - a "soundmod" folder with... well, a sound mod ;-) Problem is when I run you python program (by double clicking on it) and then open the resulting soundmoderator.htm file, I get only one "0bfc" column with sounds, the other ones (including "soundmod") are... empty. I checked the "soundmod" folder and the structure is the same as in "0bfc", except there are more subfolders in "0bfc" than in "soundmod" (ex: "Polish voices", "Music"...). I wish I could start your pg through the command line interface but I could not find out how to change directory (silly me !). Help !!!!
  18. Dead on ! I's funny how one can cope with the weirdest things as long as one gets his kicks with a game. I've gotten used to it, like many others on this forum, but man, this is a such a pain in the butt ! Thanks for reminding us ;-)
  19. I second that. A much needed help especially for newcomers !
  20. Led to believe by whom ? I suggest you have a look at that : http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/tgm/table.do?tab=table&init=1&plugin=1&language=en&pcode=tps00071 It will give you a good overview of the situation in Europe. The average work week in France is estimated by Eurostat at 41 hours in 2008. In France, the legal maximum number of hours worked per week is 35 (cf. the famous "35 hours law" passed by the social government of Lionel Jospin at the end of the 1990's). But it does not reflect the reality because since then conservative governments have considerably increased the legal number of extra hours one can get. As a civil servant I work 37.5 hours a week. As for weeks of vacations per year, it's 5 weeks in France. Some international comparison might be enlightening as well : http://www.mercer.com//press-releases/holiday-entitlements-around-the-world Hope it helps !
  21. I just found out that, for an unknown reason, graphic parameters for CMBN had been changed to "Fastest". This explains the ever reloading textures phenomenon. So the problem I ran into had nothing to do with your brilliant sound mod. Sorry about that and thanks again for your great mod !
  22. Thanks for your mod ! I installed it yesterday and so far enjoy it very much ! But I found that it has an adverse effect to the graphical part of the game. Textures keep changing all the time. Maybe it's memory related ? I've got 4 Gb of RAM on my PC. I was wondering if anybody else is experiencing a similar issue ?
  23. Let's open Pandora's box and dream on I will gladly add my two cents : - destructed vehicle models. - ability to check/uncheck weapons for a given unit (this would allow for example to make sure that a sniper team only fires with the scoped rifle). - area fire on more than one Action spot. - finetuning of the amount of ammo one unit can take from a vehicle (instead of having to choose from a list of arbitrary quantities). - possibility to grab ammo from a vehicle without having to board it first (even if the process could be slower that way). - possibility to exchange weapons and/or ammo between two adjacent units. - a "mirror" option in quick battles : when activated, the 2 sides would get the exact same forces (with manual as well as automatic selection). - in quick battles : at the beginning of setup, I'd like to have my units spread out in a line like it was in the CM1X series. This would be much easier to sort out than the current "scrambled eggs" deployment. - false enemy identifications : do you remember when your CM1X pixeltruppen thought a Tiger was approaching only to find out it was just a Stug or a Panzer IV ?
