John1966 reacted to Bozowans in Burning Bunkers Mission
It's been a long time since I've played this but I remember beating it by just attacking straight down the middle with everything I had in one giant wave. I tried going up the right and left sides like you did and it didn't work for me either.
The right side has that little wooded hill and it's very difficult to get enough forces concentrated up there. I tried sending infantry up there and they got held up by bunkers and minefields and barbed wire and whatnot and the trees blocked my tanks from being able to support them.
The left side had too narrow an attack corridor and I ran into a similar problem with not being able to concentrate enough forces in such a small area.
So instead I massed all of my forces on the map into the big area in the middle, lining them up just behind the crest of that ridge going along the middle of the map. Then I called in a smoke screen right in front of the Germans, making sure to cover only part of their defensive line and not the whole thing. Then I went "over the top" with everything I had. The smoke screen blinded half the enemy force, allowing me to concentrate all of my guns onto the other half, dealing with them piece by piece.
After I went over the top, I had the whole force halt on top of the ridge and start shooting. The open ground in the middle of the map allowed more of my troops to get LOS on the same things at the same time, so I could concentrate much more firepower. I was able to knock out a lot of the German bunkers and heavy weapons before the smoke lifted, and then I turned my guns against the other half of the German line.
After the bunkers were knocked out and the enemy machine guns were mostly destroyed or suppressed, I had my riflemen charge forward in one big human wave attack, supported by the tanks and mortars. The Soviets seem to work best without a bunch of fancy maneuvering and you just smash the enemy with one giant sledgehammer blow. I took a lot of casualties but I ended up smashing the whole German line and got a total victory.
I made a video of this mission a long time ago. You don't get to see the whole mission since I was just playing with video editing software to make a cinematic video but you can see my human wave charge across the fields and the final assault on the German trenches.

Funny I came across this thread today as the scenario I played last night had me thinking about the subject.
I was on the defence against German paratroopers and in 90 minutes I was aware that I had killed an awful lot of them.
Finished with a major victory but I'd taken a lot of casualties myself because the assault was relentless. In fact, suicidal. So suicidal, in fact, that I'd killed or wounded 632 Germans. They had little more than 100 men left as "OK".
That's ludicrous. I'd practically wiped out a battalion. Why did they keep coming at me?
Well I reviewed the map and practically all the surviving Germans were "crack". That's why they kept coming. A whole battalion of crack troops? Is that realistic?
I'm guessing that what's going on here is that as the AI isn't great attacking (there were several moments when they were coming at me without any suppressing fire), the scenario designer made them all crack to give them a chance. If they'd been regular (or even veteran) they'd have had none of it and given up the attack.
So the cause of the high casualties in this case is the AI limitations necessitating an unrealistic set up right from the start.
Of course, maybe my boys wouldn't have defended so hard in RL. "These Germans are nuts, let's withdraw", would have been a reasonable response.
But that, of course, is the problem with one-off scenarios. Successfully defending the objectives was the whole point. So not trying to do so makes the whole exercise a bit pointless.
So campaigns should be the way round this. But that only works if there's a sense that not every scenario in the campaign is a do or die affair that has to be replayed to get you through with enough to win the next one. Some of the missions should be routine. Ones you can win fairly easily and the only measure of your success is whether you kept your casualties low enough to make life easier in the next one. Some campaigns achieve this, but some deliberately set themselves up to be difficult and it doesn't work.
One-off scenarios will always be do or die so you'll get bloodbaths.
Mind you, I'd also add that including casualty parameters in the victory conditions is another weapon to make a realistic scenario. Make the objectives fairly easy but you can only win if it doesn't cost too much in lives (and, indeed, vehicles).
That thought was so profound I put it in bold.

I did that and got a tactical defeat (my best result in three attempts).
I'd won the first 4 missions (German surrender in all cases) but I've got completely stuck on this one. It might be (just) winnable but it says you'll need your forces to defend in a later mission.
As I assume your paratroopers are not going to get resupplied, they'll also be having to do it with hardly any ammunition too.
So I've decided the best way to handle this one is cease fire on the first turn resulting in a defeat but at least you'll have your force intact with a full loadout to deal with whichever mission they're next required in.

I get your point, but I wasn't trying to participate in a moral debate - I just meant to suggest that 'nuking the whole place from orbit' (so to speak) was in fact a part of British urban warfare doctrine.

It was either that or take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. While it was the only way to be sure it seemed a bit ahistorical.
Actually, thinking about it, that would be a good way of doing urban assaults with the Brits. It'd only be slightly ahistorical. 😉

John1966 got a reaction from Bulletpoint in Ritirare! - I can't drive over the first bridge
Searched the forum and haven't come up with anything on this but I'm playing Ritirare! as the allies and none of my vehicles will cross the first bridge (the ZO01 objective, if I recall). Infantry are fine but vehicles just get about as far as the third support (or first if coming the other way) and stutter like a glitch in the matrix. You then have to reverse them off.
Tried various movement commands (even hull down) but they won't cross. Searched the forum and nothing coming up despite lots of people having played it so I assume it's not a bug (unless no-one but me has actually tried driving across the bridge - you can win it like that but it's still annoying). Any ideas?
(The second bridge was also a bit funky but it had two wrecked tanks on it so put it down to that - but it let my vehicles cross one way and not the other)

So are there any scenarios which more accurately depict the CW way of fighting?  Id like to play those.

From what understand the Brit/CW tactic was to obliterate the objective with arty and air HE.  HE was the main killer.  Theoretically, the Brit inf should have been able to simply walk in over the rubble and corpses.  Of course, it didn't always go that way.
Most designers are American (I think) so they tend to design scenarios without taking into account that the Brits always planned to have massive HMG and HE support.  The designs reflect more the way the US fights.  US troops were more able to function independently.
Similarly, Russian attack scenarios tend to de-emphasize their massive HE barrages.
Of course smashing your oppo with HE is not fun, so designs try and make the match-ups a "fun challenge" - which may not be typical of reality.

I always fear fighting in cities with CW forces for this reason.  Is there a guide for using CW forces in a built up area?  Its one thing when you can call in artillery or tanks but what can you do on the attack when the streets or buildings prevent you from calling on this support?

Yes, I've seen morale improve when a squad is split which makes a certain amount of sense. If some of them are getting a bit panicky then it'll affect the rest of the team less if you split to panicky ones up.
And it works the other way when you recombine teams too. They always seem to revert to the better of the morale levels the team had.
But I assume tiring/tired etc. relates to physical rather than mental state. When I split the squad and noticed one was "ready" I assumed the other team would be "tiring". I'd just split the knackered guys from the less knackered ones. But no, they were both "ready". Which seemed odd. Not complaining though. Worth knowing, in fact.

My alarm bells ring at "tiring". Usually stop them unless it's a particularly inappropriate spot at a very inconvenient time.

Gotta think of them as fireteams, but yes. Edit: I see what you mean now, I originally read that as "three man/two man squads"; I'm not that pedantic I promise.
A four man fireteam has less firepower and fewer eyeballs, but also fewer targets to hit.
A six man fireteam has more firepower and more eyeballs, but has more targets to hit.

They take morale hits when there's shots penetrating their vehicle though, even without kills. Also large calibre non penetrating hits can spook a crew if they don't see the shooter.

No, the game AI isn't that advanced. If you make the vehicle immobilised from the beginning, the crew acts normal apart from that they can't move.
I don't even think it affects morale if the tank gets immobilised during the battle. Only if crewmembers (or their buddies in other tanks) get killed.

Going out on a limb here, but I don't imagine many of the UK folk on this forum voted for the fiasco aka Brexit.  To do so you would likely be incapable of playing a game like CM, but also you would be unlikely to be interested in history.

It's actually worse than that. The increased tax means that British citizens have lower purchasing power - they have to spend more to buy the same stuff. So now people are poorer because of the increased taxes. Not only that, local businesses are also affected as their imports are now more expensive, or they have to purchase more expensive locally-produced substitutes. This means they too have to either increase prices or else cut costs (payroll...) in order to stay profitable. And this doesn't even include the probable loss of business they'll face when customers abroad find that they now have to pay additional taxes.
I wouldn't be surprised if this leads to a net decrease in tax revenue.
It's insane that people would voluntarily do this.

    Thanks for the confirmation.
