  1. There's a ton more options in most games these days than there are in CMBN. For instance, X-Plane 9, another OpenGL game/simulation has a gazoodle of options as well as an *API* for mod writers. Oh, and X-Plane 9 supports windowed mode for the main screen.
  2. Thanks! Update: Installed it, worked OK, but had a few issues so . . . I'm now going in and editing vein's terrain and adding 128x128 grids directly to the .bmp files. Am using the following technique: http://www.bluesfear.com/tutorials/Grid.htm . . . and it works like a charm for me.
  3. Well . . . Embarrassingly enough, it turned out to interfere with the only other graphics mod I had, namely Veins_TerrainDesaturation. If I get some time, maybe I'll add a grid to Vein's. /sheepish
  4. I've tried to install a couple of grid mods for CMBN without success. They are: - Bil_s_Ground-Gridded - Niessuh_outer_grid Here's what I've tried: - I read the manual as well as the 'How To Install Mods' sticky. - Tried a few searches for similar issues. - Created a 'Z' folder in 'Data'. - Exited and restarted CMBN every time I make any change. - Copied the Niessuh_outer_grid.brz file to the 'Z' folder. - Removed the above, unzipped and copied Bil's folder there. - Then tried copying the contents of Bil's folder directly to 'Z'. - Uninstalled the CMBN demo (in case it interfered with the purchased version). - Removed any previously exploded files from the Mod Tools directory structure. - Zoomed in and zoomed out. - Rebooted the damn computer. I have a sound mod that works like a charm, but these graphics sure don't. I suspect some sort of graphics caching thing going on with Windows 7-64 bit and CMBN. I'm wondering if anyone else is having these issues. Oh, and the graphics mods work great in CMAK/CMBB.
  5. I'm about to start a 2560 point game in lots of bocage/fields and a small village in the distance as the Germans. In selecting my troops, I was not sure about the armour. Seeing as we need to move, should I select tanks or tank destroyers (or some combination of both)? So far I haven't done well with tanks, and am open to suggestions.
  6. Sorry for any confusion, but they never had a server. Setting up peer to peer is still as tricky as it ever was.
  7. Not that it's any consolation, but I assume that issue would have shown up in the demo. I tried the clickfest and it was just plain silly, so I'm sticking to PBEM (and Dropbox). I'm expecting that an upcoming patch will improve the multi-player capabilities. BF doesn't have a match server, so setting up live play is still a 1990's era clunky experience at the best of times. OTOH, we don't have to worry about BF's server being 'up' in order to play against each other.
  8. Installing games on PC's can be a REAL chore. Our Xbox on the other hand has hardly any problems at all. Now all we need is a keyboard/mouse, a bigger hard drive and much more complicated games.
  9. It figures. I started alphabetically and got stuck on that one right off the bat. I finally ended up creating a 'Hard' directory and threw it in there.
  10. I agree with the OP about the difficulty in the campaign and battles. Sure would be nice to have easy/medium/hard settings or the percentage option that we get in Quick Battles. More often than not, I run out of ammo trying to suppress the enemy and both 'flanking' sides end of dying horribly.
  11. What a great thread. I'm getting out the popcorn and coke at the same time as I'm typing this message. Multi-threaded, I am. . . In the meantime, despite several useability issues, I'm having lots of fun with the Normandy's PBEM experience.
  12. When you compare the cost of CMBN against that of many other forms of entertainment, you'll find that CM comes out on top almost every time. CMBN cost me about $75 and will provide me dozens if not hundreds of hours worth of entertainment. A single ticket to a major sporting event these days can easily cost well above that. For what? A couple of hours? Add the cost of food/drink/gas/parking, etc and it's no comparison. For me, CMBN may be a diamond in the rough, but it's certainly the best value going for my entertainment money, bar none. It's a no-brainer investment, with a great future. Sorry Vancouver Canucks, but I'm playing Combat Mission tonight. . . . Signed, Johnny (from Vancouver)
  13. Did you buy the Vista patch for CMAK? http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage_bfc&product_id=198&category_id=8&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=26 With this patch it works great on my Win 7 - 64 bit system.
  14. My box arrive in fine condition and customs didn't bend me over. I would have preferred to see the manual in 8.5" x 5.5" format with a greater contrast between the background and foreground. These 56 year old eyes require a stronger set of reading glasses than normal to read it. Am happy to see that there was a 'printer' version of the PDF file though. That being said, the first game for the IBM PC that I bought in 1981 (with DOS 1.0) was Microsoft's Olympic Decathalon ('82), which was the first game for that platform. I later graduated on to Flight Simulator 1.0 and continued from there. . . That computer cost over one third of my gross annual salary.
  15. Having just bought CMAK, CMBB and CMBN, the latter seems to have a LOT more going for it, especially in the area of graphics and I'm sure there's a lot more going on under the hood. That being said, I don't regret buying any of them. The interface is awfully dated on the first two, however the latter sure could do with some updates.
  16. I click on the unit, and have the paths turned on, however the thick semi-transparent line for the current unit is sometimes difficult to make out against the myriad of thin ones. So, I fiddle around for a bit and either misinterpret what I thought I saw or just remove and re-issue the order just to be sure.
  17. I've accidentally used ammo bearers as scouts, and with all those floating icons, am having a tough time determining who's what and who are they connected with. Also finding it harder than CMBB (which I just got as well) to see the movement orders for the active unit. Guess I just need more practice and stronger reading glasses.
  18. Bingo!!! I found that although you could pause at any time in RT, I quite often didn't and got caught up in the action. WEGO forces me to review the entire battlefield again, so I like 'em both. RT with pause and WEGO for teh win!!! RT without pause? Just say no.
  19. Got it in Vancouver today. No customs charges at all!
  20. I recently bought the CMAK/CMBB combo pack as well as the CMBN Steelbook (from the BF web site). Since the former are jam packed with included battles/operations and are several years old, I was wondering if the built-in scenarios have been rated anywhere? I don't (think I) need more battles/operations, but would like to know which are the 'best' of the built-in ones. Update: Oh wait, found a great link: http://www.theblitz.org/scenarios/Combat-Mission/CMBB/action=list&game=64&order=d&order_by=rating
  21. Straight port, no. A lot more development money and a larger team, yes. The vision behind CM has a LOT of potential, but I think it has a long way to go before it gets there at Battlefront.
