  1. Its been awhile since Ive posted on the forum, but has anyone ever tried a static defense consisting of a solid line of trenches across the map? Coupled with lots of inf and AT guns, I was able to annihilate my opponents forces and took less than 10 casualties. I have found it effective, but lame too. Any other rock solid defenses out there?
  2. A while ago one of my friends was playing Russians, and had brought his entire infantry force consisting of an infantry battalion in a massive assault on my lines. I was expecting a bloody battle at a group of pine trees across from the road he was coming up. All of a sudden, his plane he bought came over head and landed a huge group of bombs right in the middle of his troops, which were, fortunately for me, packed together. Its been awhile so i dont remember exact numbers, but he took around 150-200 casualties, and what was left of his army scattered, some running off of the map. He surrendered the next turn.
  3. I would have payed 25 dollars for the demo. Ok, maybe not, but 10 bucks hell yeah! The seven years it gives you is more than enough to conquer the entire map as either side, if you wish to do so. The replay value is high, as you can choose multiple ways to prosecute a war, and its different each time. Plus, the new patch gives it a better ai and tcp/ip. It is an incredible work if you dont mind old school graphics and sound fx. Buy it, its the best $25 youll ever spend on a game, maybe anything.
  4. just surround moscow dont invade it or even throw anything at it, and you have just cut russian mpp's in half. It works in single and multiplayer, and it is usually what signals russias eventual defeat.
  5. The game may be a little too simplistic for some people...but its not beer and pretzels like A&A...its complex enough to require strategic thought and foresight, while simple enough to draw in a decent base of people who will play it. It definitely one of my favorites.
  6. Has anyone actually invaded Russia before blitzkrieg in the West? And won?
  7. I believe for the most part thats how it worked in real life. The Italians never got jets or tigers from the Germans, as the Russians never gave the Western Allies T-34's. The only reason the Americans gave the British some equipment is that they desparately needed it. Even in an Alliance, you dont want to share your tech secrets...
  8. I too have had problems in Spain. When attacking Iberia, you have to land a unit that cuts off Spain from occupied France. Then the going is quick and you can readily deploy troops against France or Italy. In a game versus the AI where I failed to cut them off, the added advantage I gave them let them crush Russia and actually attempt a sea lion when the game ended.
  9. Territory where you can build ALL units must have a land connection to your capital. However, you can build air units in ANY working captured city. I too would like to build American armies in France before liberation, but alas... oh, and working means not wiped out.
  10. If your going for Ireland, just use air power and a couple battleships. Land a single corps and when dublin is clear, just move that solitary corp in. Very little forces wasted. Although the first time I invaded, I left Monty and 4 armies stranded there...
  11. I hope Hubert is scanning this thread, as many important points have been raised. I think the brest-sub is pretty much universal, and I have even fell prey to it. And my transports stacked and made each other disappear too. Odd. I have also noticed the Russian tendency to abandon the caucasus and build too many HQ's and fighter fleets. If they build so many HQ's, they should be building masses of corps to delay the Germans until the West can provide a decent distraction. Stalingrad should be considered a priority defense by the AI, as it was a very important target in real life. Anyway, perhaps in the next patch these AI quirks will be addressed.
  12. I would like to see the game extended to '48. but not into the '50's, that would be ridiculous. Also, as the game gets farther past may '45, the late victory penalty should get higher in a compounded manner. By the time '48 rolls around, if you just conquered your enemies, there should be a very hefty penalty. I also like the idea to make it optional in hte options screen to extend gameplay. I cant imagine surviving as Germany four years after overlord.
  13. Holding France is possible. At normal, exp + 0, I get a few corps to defend the Italian front and thats all it takes. Mountain entrenchment is especially useful here. For Germany, you shuttle every allied unit possible to the defense of France and make sure you have one French HQ and one British. For the most part, just retrengthen your forces when attacked, but if an oppurtunity presents itself kill off a German unit or two. This slows them down for a while. Also, move your entire navy off the coast of the low countries. This is useful both for hiting German troops on the coast and providing targets for their fighters. Gamey, I know, but it works. Finally, once USA joins, so when they enter, take everything over to Framce and buy an HQ asap. Hopefully, Paris will still be protected when USSR goes to war. Then the war will dramatically turn in your favor. In a game where I employed that strategy, The Russians were in Berlin in early '43, and the Western Allies were charging down Italy. I payed a heavy price in terms of navy and land forces for the Allies, but the Russians just overwhelmed Germany, since they were wasting all their money on France.
  14. '39 is definitely my favorite, but there is something to be said for trying your hand at history's stalingrad or kursk. Plus, I love seeing how long I live as Axis in the overlord campaign.
