  1. I've got all three, plus the demos of CMBB and CMAK, still on my HD. That makes me think it's time I played the CMBO demos again. It's been a while!
  2. I, too, would like them listed in chronological order.
  3. S P O I L E R * * * As luck would have it, I set up everything I had at the start on the north side of the fort (where there are no minefields ), behind the ridge. I used my TRPs on as many sandbagged positions on that side of the map as possible. I used my Co HQ, along with three Matildas set to shoot and scoot from the ridge, to check for gun positions. Having located the Italian guns, I used both my arty observers to plaster them with fire, along with the three 50mm mortars. Once this had knocked out most of the guns along the edge of the fort, I used the remaining ammo from the lighter arty FO to provide a smokescreen, loaded most of my infantry up onto the Matildas, and fast-moved them across to the fort. A combination of ADVANCE moves for the infantry, and HUNT orders for the Matildas allowed me to move as far as General Maletti's HQ. When the reinforcements turned up, I simply used them to harrass the Italians' flanks. Most of the Italian Green and Conscript squads I encountered on the way surrendered to me, giving me a 82-18 victory. I didn't manage to capture MAJ GEN Maletti, but his Batallion HQ squad was panicked and retreating from the fight when the game ended.
  4. You must have got mine, as I ordered yesterday, and still haven't had confirmation.
  5. I vote Ligur writes the next strategy guide.
  6. I accidentally disabled AUTORUN, and now I can't get it back. It's great with the CDV CMBB disk, but a bit annoying with everything else. I'd love to know how to turn that particular function back on
  7. Too many to mention them all, but current favourites include: IL2 Sturmovik Vietcong Delta Force: Black Hawk Down Madden 2003 Am now eagerly awaiting: CMAK (of course) Operation Flashpoint 2 Pirates of the Carribean Snooker 2003
  8. The guide isn't "s***" but the quality of some of the b&w pictures is poor. I bought the second edition on the understanding that they had been improved over the originals, but I'm afraid to say that they add little to the written text which seems quite good in itself. I know that Battlefront.com is more into serious strategy than pretty pictures, but it still looks like an opportunity missed. The people for whom the guide seems to be intended (somewhere between average player and serious grog) are probably the very people for whom decent, explanatory images would be the most useful. It would be great if the screenshots used were available to d/l in colour, but I don't think it's going to happen.
  9. Are you assuming that the average commander in the field had a magical map that told him exactly what could be seen from every 10 square metres of the battlefield? You are being encouraged to think in terms of real life situations, and not use gamey tactics other "classic" games allow. I agree that when you're new to this game, working out what can or cannot be seen from where is very difficult. As a previous person said, getting down to level one, and skimming rapidly over the terrain is a good way to get a feel for possible lines of sight. Another useful tool is the terrain mod with an overlaid grid, which allows you to get a much better idea of slight undulations, and folds in the ground; I don't use it myself, but I've read that a number of people rely on it quite heavily. You will get better at "reading" the terrain as you become more experienced with the game. Trust me
  10. Don't forget that objects, such as buildings, that you see on the screen are just approximate representations, and not to be trusted entirely. The only way to be sure 100% that you can't see the tank, or that the tank can't see you, is to use the LOS tool. And yes, this kind of thing has happened to me before, where two buildings seemed to "meet" at a corner.
  11. I bought CMBO online, and would have done the same for CMBB if BTS hadn't decided to go with a European distributor: in fact I'd have preferred it that way. BTS's customer service is second to none. I might not trust them with my life, but I certainly trust them with my money.
  12. Just browsing through the games on offer at Amazon.co.uk and discovered that Combat Mission 2 (as CMBB is known over here) is currently available with a 20% discount! Some excellent readers' reviews. Out of curiosity, I also checked Amazon's French and German websites. The French, as usual, have got everything arse about face and their description of the game says that you can take command of all the forces involved: British, US, Canadian, French, Polish, and German! And yes, they do say that the battles all take place on the EASTERN front The German site says that the game is currently backordered. I didn't read all of the reviews as my German isn't as good as it once was! I did see that the readers' ratings gave it 4 out of 5 stars.
  13. You should have requested a cease-fire instead. I believe you always get it immediately playing against the AI. Sorry, just realised you stated it was a PBEM. Maybe your opponent would have accepted a ceasefire request? [ December 31, 2002, 02:10 AM: Message edited by: ColdSober ]
  14. In the scenario list in CMBB, the date of the battle is included. I was delighted to see this, as I too prefered to play them in chronological order.
  15. I stopped playing CMBO the moment CMBB appeared on the shelves in France. Now I'm wondering how to get back into Beyond Overlord. I see that a lot of people here have stuck with it because they've downloaded lots of mods to improve the CMBO graphics. Now, I'm thinking that this might be the way to go about rekindling my interest in the original game. Can someone suggest a good place to start, as I've NEVER downloaded a single mod before? I have a few questions about the way you go about it: Do you think I should stick to one "modder's" work so that there is a consistency of style across the board? If so, who is recognised as the "best" of the bunch? Or the most prolific? Or don't you think that this matters at all? I've seen specific "winter" mods, but I don't remember if the original game had separate BMPs for vehicles and uniforms for summer and winter. If I use winter mods does this mean that I have to remove them again, every time I want to play a summer battle? Is there a way of making this easier to do, or do I have to manually add and remove them one by one each time? Can I keep them in separate folders, and change the whole lot in one go? How long does this process take? What is CMMOS? Do I need to know? I have loads of space on my HD, and plenty of RAM, so I don't need to worry about the hi-res graphics taking up too much space, or slowing the game down, do I? Any idea what percentage of the vehicles, uniforms etc. available in CMBO have been modded? If I'm going to do this, I don't want to do it half-assed. I'm willing to spend quite a bit of time over it. I have a DSL modem, so d/l speeds should be quite good. Has anyone ever attempted to do this operation on the scale I'm suggesting? I'm assuming that most people here have added mods one by one to their collections as they've been completed and made available. Sorry if these questions seem stupid, but I really haven't gone into this side of CM at all, except for taking the very occasional peek at some of the artwork. There are clearly some talented people out there. Thanks for any help you can give me on this!
  16. Rather than scattering the HQ units around the town, put them all in the biggest house in the village. After all, they're probably eating in the unofficial officers' mess together, no? Make sure that the building they're in puts them out of C&C of their men, has no adjacent cover and concealment, and that part of the Russian force is set up in a position to mow down any of the officers who try to rejoin their men. Add low levels of ammunition to the other suggestions made here for the German forces to account for them not being able to find all their equipment in the panic. This should create the kind of effect you're looking for. Remember that command delays will be reduced if the German battalion is "veteran", so make them regulars. 17. Just when you thought it was safe to accuse these guys of being no different to everyone else in their industry, they go and rip your legs out from under you. Excellent service, BFC! You just convinced another doubting customer to part with his hard-earned cash.
  18. Just had a quick look at three or four of these. Great stuff, OD! It'll certainly make QBs against the AI a more lively affair. I'd been despairing of ever finding a really playable computer-generated map that looked even vaguely realistic. Now, I don't even have to try for quite a while
  19. Actually, 240 seconds are only four minutes, but I take your point. Seriously, I think that if you're getting delays like that then you're either on a poorly-designed map or else you're planning way too much movement in advance. My most complicated moves rarely end up with delays of over 45 seconds, especially on roads. I think you're trying to do too much. There is actually quite a lot of leeway when turning corners: you shouldn't have to plot more than one point for a right-angled turn. I think aiming for graceful curves when driving a 38T tank is expecting too much. In any case, as soon as something unexpected happens, your careful planning will probably become redundant. Yes, I do think that AFVs should have a "follow road" command where you just set the entry and exit points for the road portion of your journey. I think that in trying to prevent abuses of the myriad of waypoints, micromanagement orgies of CMBO, another problem has arisen, especially as was pointed out in a previous thread on this topic, if you're trying to co-ordinate movement of a convoy along a road. Having said that, I recently saw some photographs depicting German armor trying to move in the "mud" season: even on 'roads' the process looked like a nightmare.
  20. I'm telling you now, you're getting socks. Like I always do. Every damned year!
  21. I seem to remember this came up a long time ago, over on the CMBO forum. IIRC, it was suggested that infantry might not want to hang around too close to a large slab of metal that's attracting a lot of enemy attention. When small arms fire is trying to get a tank commander to button up, you don't necessarily want to be around it when bullets are ricocheting in all directions. Someone else stated that the correct place for infantry is in front of the tank, not behind it, as a screening force to counter the possibility of ambushes by enemy infantry armed with anti-tank assets. Personally, I think I'd rather be behind a tank than in front of it, especially when I remember the hostility displayed by some of my highschool friends whose fathers were infantrymen towards the tankers' off-spring. It seems that in the peacetime army a high number of casualties are caused by tanks accidentally rolling over friendly infantry hidden in foxholes. But then, what happens if the tank commander suddenly spots a deadly enemy ahead, and decides to sling the tank into reverse? I would imagine that visibility to the rear isn't too great in one of those things. I think, actually, I don't want to be anywhere near a tank. Or a battle, come to that.
  22. You can only hide a tank when it is stationary at the beginning of a turn. You can't tack the "and hide" command onto the end of a movement order the way you do with infantry. You can cancel whatever's left of the tank's movement order, and then hit hide, but this will leave it, more often than not, short of its intended destination. "Hide" for tanks does NOT represent the crew getting out and throwing stuff over it in an attempt to conceal it with additional camouflage, except if you "hide" it during the setup phase. Once the tank is moved, that extra cammo is lost for the rest of the game. "Hide" in the middle of a game represents reducing the engine to a low idle so that the enemy doesn't pick it up as a sound contact. I remember the Band of Brothers scene refered to, and can only assume that those tanks were hidden during the setup phase
  23. Then again, this suggests that it may well be piracy on a grand scale. An Indian (dots, not feathers) friend told me recently that over 90% of the software being used over there is pirated.
  24. Yes, but only a fool with a total disregard for other people's property and rights then goes and announces their actions on the makers'/owners' own forum. To do so is simply taking the p***! Not the French version I received. It's green, like the one shown in the pic, but it has the CDV, Battlefront.com, and Focus labels on that bottom edge. If European versions can be different, then I don't see why a batch made in the States specifically for export shouldn't be slightly different (with different cover-art) too. Or just a batch run off at a different point in time. Items sold on internet auctions often crop up twice or more in succession. I haven't looked at this one in detail, but I have seen this happen on French sites before. The seller specifies a certain length of time that the auction will last, or it may be imposed by the site. If he doesn't get an offer that interests him in the period specified, then there's nothing to say that he HAS to sell it. He just puts the sale up again, and hopes to get higher bids second time around. Do we know for sure that this person already sold one copy? And how many people on this forum ordered more than one copy of the game, the "extra" one(s) being meant for friends or relations? If you looked at YOUR copy and decided that you hated the game, would you be so confident about giving the others as presents? Looks to me like some people are over-reacting, but Battlefront can clear this up quickly by saying if they recognise the CD and cover or not. Until then, all this is mere speculation.
