1. I don't know why, but I'm just not getting this concept. Obviously, each board is different. However, I would like some input on the best terrain to set up in. Also, is it better to set up with wide LOS or lanes? Finally, in a scenario like the one I played last night, is it better to set your guns up on hilltops where they see everything (and everything sees them), or should I place them in depressions where they have limited LOS and hope something wanders by for them to shoot at? Scott
2. All this talk of fighting, raping, pillaging... my illustrious opponent and I have completed TWO turns! I haven't even seen a bad guy yet. Hopefully, we will start moving a little faster today... Scott
3. Well, I'll be the first SuperNewbie to ask a dumb question: how do I contact my opponent? I have a feeling there is an easy answer to this question that I'm just not getting... Thanks again, SuperTed... Scott
4. Hey folks- thanks for the replies. I'll definitely be trying some of your suggestions out...
5. I'm sure this has probably been discussed before, but I'm not sure what to call my search. I just got CM one week ago today, but the last three times I've played the AI, I have massacred it. I've suffered a combined total of less than 30 casualties, while the AI has taken well over 300 in the same time. In all three scenarios, the AI surrendered less than half-way into the game... I'm sure I'm still not that great at the game, although I'm starting to successfully apply some of the tactics I've read about on here (pulled off a beautiful ambush last night!). These scenarios are giving me a good chance to try new things like the ambush or attacking hull-down, but I'm obviously not up against the most talented opponent in the world. I realize that ambushing a real person will be much harder. So here's my question. When I'm playing the AI, what is the best way to do it? Should I play set scenarios or QB's? If I'm playing a QB, should I attack, defend, probe, or play a ME? Is it better to let the AI buy units, or should I do it manually? If manually, should I do it for both sides, or just me? Any feedback on this will be greatly appreciated. I know the best opponent is another human, and I'm playing in SuperTed's newbie tournament which starts tomorrow. I can't wait, but I LIKE playing against the AI sometimes. Sorry to any old grogs on here who may have seen this question asked before... Scott
6.
quote:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by Louie the Toad: IMHO based upon 45 years of wargaming, this is the most thrilling wargaming experience since throwing rocks at plastic soldiers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh! Oh! Don't forget the firecrackers!

We preferred bb guns. You could really get some nasty wounds on the little green soldiers with a well placed pellet...
7. For folks who don't know and don't want to investigate further, ASL/SL is Advanced Squad Leader or its predeccesor Squad Leader, from Avalon Hill. The ASL rules came in a three ring binder, and each of the numerous expansions added new sections to the binders. Personally, having played ASL a few times and CM a few times, I'll take CM anyday. In addition to having to sink tons o' cash into ASL (the basic rules were $45 alone, another $45 were needed for the first set of boards and counters), I spent most of my time "playing" ASL scanning through the tome trying to figure out what modifiers apply for unit A shooting through a picket fence at unit B behind tombstones at a lower elevation blah, blah, blah. For people who have the ability or commitment to learn ASL, more power to 'em. I've been playing CM for six days, and I'm already getting some sense of strategy. Because CM does the rules for me, I'm able to focus on WHAT I'm doing instead of how to do it correctly within the game parameters... Scott
8. No Tigers? Hmmm... I guess I'd be willing to settle for Hetzers. In the interest of fairness, though, I think the other guy's force should be a platoon. Seriously, I'm really looking forward to playing a live human being. I'm not very good, but the AI already drives me crazy sometimes. Thanks again for setting this up!
9. I just want to take a moment here at work and thank SuperTed for making this lil shindig possible. My first semester of grad school ends tonight, and my first tournament starts this weekend! I have so much to look forward to (less work and getting me arse whumped). Heck, if Ted'll give me a bunch of Tigers, good fields of fire, and an opponent armed with a company of infantry (and nothing else), then I think I've got a shot. Just kidding- I actually started doing okay against the AI the last couple days- just got the game last Friday. I definitely should have waited until after finals... Scott
10. Never mind. I promise to get slaughtered by the AI a few times for the wasted BW...
11. Hey- I just got CM today, and I am thrilled. However, I'm having a problem reading text on the screen during missions. When text appears (like if a tank gets hit), the background color is white, and the text is bright yellow. As a result, I can't read it. My computer shouldn't have a problem running the game, and everything else is great. I have loaded a couple mods that have helped with the text on the interface (where text beackgrounds are also white), but it didn't help with text in the camera view... Thanks for any help... Scott
