  1. CMx1 does not support widescreen. I just got used to the scaling. CMBB is just too cool at 1600x1200.
  2. Yea, I tried installing DirectX8.1 in the virtual PC (installed just fine), but it made no difference, CMx1 games just detect 640x480 s/w mode and exit out. Vista apparently DOES have DirectX9 support built int because games that don't have any DirectX10 support play just fine. And some games (Crysis for example) give you the choice of select DirectX9 or 10. The suspicion is that Vista has dropped the old legacy support for the DirectX5 era stuff that CMx1 was written under. The last thing I can think of to try would be to DL and install the 20 demo of VMWare and see if it's video emulation is any better than MS's. If it works, then I've got the decision to make - give up on CMx1 or pay $140 (I think it was) for a personal license!
  3. Set up a Win98SE virtual PC. It's emulating an S3 (are they still in business) video card w/4MB of VRAM. Supposedly I'm supposed to be able to configure it to emulate an 8MB card, but haven't been able to figure out how yet. CMBB tried to start in 640x480 software mode, but then immediately exits w/o an error message. I vaguely recall that we had to manually install DirectX separately back then, so I'm going to search and see if I can find an old DX5 installer or something like that and see if that can help. Maybe between DX and more VRAM I can get it running? <fingers crossed>
  4. I'm going digging in the basement this weekend. See if i can find one of my old disks. <fingers crossed> I'll report back once I've given it a try.
  5. Rats. Oh well, the one saving grace is that Steve says the next major project they are working on is a WWII version of CMx2 ... I'm awaiting for it. <sigh>
  6. You're lucky. With Vista & ATI I got a hard system lock up. Had to hit the power button and hold it for five seconds to reboot. Just thought about Virtual PC this morning ... you're saying that doesn't work either? Crap.
  7. Great news about a WWII variant of CMx2. I've just had to replace my dying 5+yo PC with a new Vista (yes, I am a masochist, thank you for asking ) based one and was devastated to discover that CMx1 games + Vista = hard crash & PC lock up. hmmm ... sure hope PBEM is still supported!? <breath held & fingers crossed> I can't wait for the chance to place my order.
  8. Brand new system build. Vista Ultimate 64. ATI HD3870. CMBB actually crashed the system so hard, I had to hit the power button for 5 seconds to force a hard reboot and the machine took nearly 30 minutes to reboot and recover. Depressing. I've enjoyed these games (BO, BB, AK) for so long, I'd happily pay full price for an updated version that runs under Vista. There just aren't any other good PBEM games of this genre ... at least not that I nor my friends have been able to find.
  9. My 5+yo P4 is dying (and not very quietly). I've just bought the parts for a new system. I went with an ATI HD3870 based video card based on my happiness with my old X800GTO. Have been planning to install Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Now I read in many threads here that I should not expect to be able to run CMBO, CMBB nor CMAK on that setup. I know Vista runs DX10 and XP runs DX9. I'd like to go with a 64-bit OS to take advantage of more memory. Has anyone been successful getting any of the CMx1 games running under any OS (32-bit XP or Vista or 64-bit XP or Vista) on one of these new ATI HD 38x0 cards? Thank you,
  10. Thanks to Matt's patience, the problem is resolved. When I mentioned that the text is fine in CMBO & CMBB and only a problem in CMAK, he suggested a reinstall. So I uninstalled, reinstalled and added Patch 1.03 ... and the text is visible once again. Thanks to Battlefront for such quick and responsive support!!
  11. Good morning, I've reviewed the CMAK Troubleshooting FAQ. I've searched the Forum. I've searched Google. I've updated my video drivers (from ATI Catalyst 6.8 to 6.11). My video card is a new ATI X800GTO. I've tried the replacement files in Radeon_text_fix.zip. I am unable to see the text during the video resolution selection process (just black rectangles where the text should be in the white pop-up). I assume the resolution test order is the same as CMBB, so when I select the 1st option, I believe I'm running in 1600x1200. I am unable to see the in-game text. All I see are white, pale yellow or light cyan rectangles. Note that I CAN see the text in the scenario selection area. I have no problems with any text in CMBO or CMBB. Any thoughts or recommendations? Thanks,
  12. My friend & I finished earlier in the week. I'm not sure how, but I fought him to a Draw (ge was Allies, I was Germans). He had 700 casualties, I had ~650. I lost all of my bunkers, 90% of my AFVs (60-ish?) and all but 2 guns. He lost 80 AFVs. Lots of fires burning when all was said and done. A fantastic battle CDIC! Thank you for sharing it with us,
  13. CDIC, I also have to commend you on this scenario. I'm in the middle of a PBEM with it right now. I'm playing the German side and feel like I'm getting my butt kicked, but it's fascinating and I'm still having a lot of fun! Oh yeah, my friend also claims to be having fun too. Now whether that's due to his liking the battle or liking the fact that he's been pushing right over my forces on almost every front ... I don't know. Thank for putting this together!
  14. Serious flashbacks here folks. Beautiful work Mr Dorosh! Just beautiful!
