  2. You have to delete any sound mods you have installed.
  3. Roads tend to allow two vehicles side by side. In addition to giving a 5 sec pause for the following vehicle, try putting one on the RHS of the road and the 2nd on the LHS, and stagger any additional vehicles that are following. Of course the issue is that additional pauses are not every 5 seconds but increase exponentially to 45 seconds. So, in addition to increased PAUSES, the other technique I use is to have following vehicles drive at a slower speed at least until the first waypoint. So, if the first Vehicle moves FAST, later vehicles could move QUICK, then HUNT etc.

  5. Interesting video. Can't help feeling that they are looking at the situation purely from a conventional thinking military perspective. As we are seeing in Ukraine that is not a good predictor. It would be like trying to fight WW2 using WW1 tactics and strategies. What about Cyberwar, taking out US carriers, disabling communications or the ability of aircraft (or any unit to properly function), destroying the civilian infrastructure etc etc. It is unclear if those concepts are in the wargame. Since the motivation of all defense industries is to demonstrate how great their products are (that they have sold or want to sell), one doubts that any "disruptive" technologies would be represented.

  7. That is very sad. He has done a great deal to improve the game. However, it is predictable as so many of our best end up disappearing. Can only hope after a suitable time away he rekindles his enthusiasm. Some do return.
  8. Is this very recent? When I played CMSF2 with TOW Humvees, the bug was that once dismounted, the TOW team could not move nor re-embark. Tow teams that arrive on a transport could disembark and move and deploy.

  11. Greg: The "horrible" reality of the game is that the only way to efficiently spot mines is to send "Expendable" units ahead to trigger a mine. (And even then the first unit could be lucky and run over mines without triggering anything.) I consider engineers valuable so would send them to a triggered minefield in order to mark them (If it is absolutely necessary to cross that location) which makes the minefield a little safer to cross on SLOW. But even when traversing a marked minefield moving SLOW a unit can still trigger a mine and get blown up. Theoretically you would think that the first unit should be a mine-clearing vehicle. If one is concerned about AT weapons and has the arty, try blowing up any potential hiding spot within a 100 meters... or... use SMOKE to hide the vehicle so it can clear the mines with no enemy having LOS.
  12. For an example of the "other way of doing things" look at "Star Citizen". Raised $104 million in 2023, total of $644 million in crowdfunding, and still it isn't complete... and has changed its focus away from what early adopters wanted. "The launch of the game was originally anticipated for 2014, but has been repeatedly delayed."
  13. Yes, ditto. While folks clamor for early release, they swiftly turn into complaining harpies if there are bugs. So, BF's policy of only releasing "when it's done" is wise and good.
  14. Can anyone point me to any posts on these forums or anywhere that defines what Ukraine "winning" actually means or looks like? Folks seem to assume that "winning" means Ukraine gets back its eastern territories. However, despite many requests, I can't recall any sensible posts on how Ukraine is actually going to do that. The only strategy seems to be a forlorn hope that Putin will disappear and Russia will disintegrate. This despite the regular articles in papers like, WSJ that show in charts and stats that Russia doing just fine thank you with new markets in China, Iran and all the other nations in the ME, Africa and S America that quietly support Russia and China. It seems to be forgotten that approx 50% of the eastern parts of Ukraine are occupied by Russian sympathizers who were happy for Russia to annex the territories. If Ukraine ever did reoccupy its eastern provinces, Ukraine could face an potentially endless "Vietnam-like" unconventional/guerilla civil war. In addition... there is the potential crisis in Transnistria. On Wednesday separatist officials there claimed they’re enduring “socio-economic strangulation” as Moldova “unleashed an economic war against our people.” They appealed to the Russian Federation Council and Russian State Duma to “implement diplomatic measures to protect/defend Transnistria.” After Mr. Putin launched his full invasion of Ukraine in 2022, all of Transnistria’s trade has passed through customs and border points under the authority of the Moldovan capital of Chișinău. Moldova wants to reintegrate Transnistria, and this year it introduced regulations requiring companies in the breakaway region to pay import and export duties that will go toward Moldova’s national budget. From 2001 until this year the duties paid by Transnistrian companies have been a revenue stream for the separatists. Russia’s proxies are now citing Moldova’s recent policy change as a pretext for Wednesday’s appeal to Moscow. But the real issue is that Moldova has been moving closer to the West, and under President Maia Sandu it has become a candidate to join the European Union. Transnistria claimed Wednesday it is “committed to peaceful political-diplomatic methods of solving disagreements.” But it added that it would “fight tenaciously for its own identity and the rights and interests of Transnistrian people and will not shy back from protecting/defending them.” The Institute for the Study of War notes that “Transnistrian officials specifically used ‘zashchita,’ a word that means both ‘defense’ and ‘protection’ in their request, likely to set conditions for the Kremlin to interpret ‘defense’ in a military sense if it so chooses.” This is the familiar Russian playbook for justifying intervention in a nearby country: Encourage separatists to claim discrimination and ask for Russian help. Moldova’s only protection is Ukraine, which has stopped the Russians from advancing west of Kherson and has driven the Russian navy back in the Black Sea. This has shielded Moldova from the imminent threat of a Russian military intervention.
  15. From my experience of major updates, the old campaign saves, may or may not work from the start of a mission. Unlikely to work from a save from the middle of a mission.
  16. Thanks guys... What I conclude is that it probably isn't that useful to provide the player with one offmap 120mm mortar unit when the scenario is built-up/urban. 2+ 81mm would be better for KOing ATGM's on roofs and generally keeping heads down.
  17. FWIW I have been playing Matrix's DC Ardennes and that might be a very good for providing an operational level "scenario set-up" for CM. Unlike the earlier DC games which were Regiment-Division, Ardennes is at the Battalion level.
  18. The game does simulate that. But am curious. If the 120mm has more HE why has it less explosive power? That makes sense. Unfortunately, in the CMSF game I have found the 120mm to be very inaccurate (and ineffective in destroying buildings). A POINT target will result in shells landing all around an approx 50m+ diameter. In the game, the 155mm however, are very accurate (other than maybe the spotting rounds). My original question was how do players use their 120mm mortars in built-up maps given these game results?
  19. Been playing the latest DC game: Ardennes. The scale has come down a lot from the three earlier releases. Now the units are mostly Battalions. Could be useful for creating CM scenarios.
  20. Right... so what you are saying is that one cannot use the 120mm in the game as one could in RL as it doesn't have the same destructive properties you are saying it has in RL. In CMSF the 120mm definitely has much less destructive power than the 155mm (as well as much less accuracy). In addition it is slower to call in than the 155mm unless one has an FO. In CMSF almost any unit can call in the 155mm with about the same time as an FO. CMSF really needs some major updates.
  21. I am talking about the game. In the CMSF game, the 155mm has a much larger destructive effect than the 120mm mortars. The call time for the 120mm is exactly the same as for the 155mm, when using an FO. When using a regular unit, it takes significantly longer to call to the 120mm. It all seems counter-intuitive to me. That's why I wondered if thie above reflects RL or is an inaccuracy of the game.
  22. It's unfortunately very common for our most prolific and talented modders and designers to get burned out (for several reasons) on a regular basis. Hopefully, Koh will be one of the ones who eventually recover enthusiasm for CM and return.
  23. Maybe they are being provided in an ahistoric way in CMSF, but in the German campaign, one is often given several 155mm and only ever one 120mm. As mentioned, the 155mm is accurate and terrific for destroying large building complexes. However, it takes just as long to call the 120mm mortars and they are rather inaccurate. Are starting to think the 120mm is good for area fire over a bunch of roofs to clear them of Syrian ATGM's and RCL's etc. I used to use 81mm and 60mm for that, but these are never provided (in the German campaign). I just wondered what the RL use of the 120mm would be. Perhaps the 120mm can be called in faster than the 155mm in RL?
