  1. Actually, my interest in the Eastern Front is the ONLY thing making me think about getting the game. I'd love to play in that sector. I wish there had been an Eastern Front add-on for BO but alas, didn't happen. By the way, speaking of depressing, I just started reading a book called "Siege" about some of the truly desperate battles on the Eastern Front. Very sombering so far.
  2. I don't have the game yet, but those pics are tipping the scales! Some bad-arsed looking weapon systems there.
  3. Thanks all. After reading the responses in this and the BO forum, I am firmly entrenched on the fence. Argh.
  4. Thanks for all the inputs. About what I expected I think. I guess that's good? I dunno, still leaves me undecided though I'll probably get it just to see. That and I'm having a heck of a time getting CM:BO games.
  5. No flame from me Pud. That's exactly the kind of input I set out to find by posting in the CM:BO forum.
  6. The one I was referring to is actually titled Rommel and his Art of War. I can't find Infantry Tactics anywhere. Been looking for awhile.
  7. Thanks D. What you just described is pretty much why I never bought CM:BB when it first came out. With one notable exception, the thought of the Eastern Front does interest me greatly. But, at the time, I had reached burnout and it just didn't seem to be the same leap that going from say Steel Panthers to CM was. But, the forced layoff has rekindled a bit of interest, hence my question. I'm reall hoping for lots of opinions from folks that have both and really want to hear from those that choose to play CM:BO despite owning BB. I'd be really intereted to hear why the choice.
  8. Oddly enough, he IS the email partner I mentioned. But as for kicking butt, I think you have the kicker and kickee confused. Greywolf is using me right now! Thanks for the words everyone. More opinions welcome! Oh, I meant to ask, what is the AFV death clock??? I tend to apply my own death clock (if I own an AFV, it's only a matter of time before it's death) but somehow I imagine you are speaking of something else. 9. Wow, I clicked this thread by accident but glad I did. Very entertaining. p.s. I have an inate power to reduce ANY tank to a smoldering ruin... as long as it's one of mine.
  10. Sounds like "Through Hell for Hitler." I saw that book recommended on many a site and went out and bought it. All it did was talk about the gentleman's romps through the countryside with an occasional mention of the battles around him. Bleh. Has anyone read Rommel's book? I just ordered it yesterday. Is it any good on tactics? May be something along the line of what this gentleman is looking for.
  11. I realize this is the BO forum but I wanted to get everyone's opinion on this that I could, including those that may not play BB for various reasons. I had CM burn out and never purchased CM:BB. Since my return from my latest deployment, I have started playing some CM:BO again. Actually that's not true. I started a few PBEM games while deployed (sanity check and all that). I've seen some comments here and there about how folks though CM:BO was more fun. I realize that may be a vocal minority though. I'm thinking about buying the game, but am wondering if I should. First off, is it more or less fun than CM:BO? Or is it just "different" fun? Is it to late in the game to get my money's worth since another CM is being developed? Or will I still be able to get enough PBEM games for it to be worth it? Or should I just wait for the next iteration? I'd appreciate all honest responses I can get on this. If you are worried about posting a negative opinion on this site, feel free to email me. I don't want anyone to ruffle any feathers. Here's my addy: loketar@comcast.net Thanks in advance... p.s. Yes this will appear in the CM:BO forum too just so I hit up everyone...

  13. What he said. If you do end up with an older version, the 1.12 patch is all you need and is available on the Battlefront site, download section.
  14. Thanx jwxspoon, but it was the card itself. I should have suspected when certain games that had worked, CM being a prime example, failed to work a few weeks ago. I plugged a Voodoo3 in and it ran fine. So, I used this as an excuse to get a new Radeon 9500 Pro and everything is peachy. Oh, and I had my son plug the old card in to his computer. Wouldn't run there either. It just went bad after excessive use I guess.
  15. Disregard. Nothing will run. Apparently some aspect of my computer has sh*t the bed.
  16. I am trying to revive CM:BO on my computer. I have been playing a bud while deployed using my laptop. Now that I am home, my desktop can't seem to run CM:BO anymore. What basically happens is, as the movie ends, or if I hit a button to skip it, instead of getting the menu screen I get a lock up. A hard lock up. One that requires a reset. I'm running a 1.1 Athlon, 64Mb Radeon DDR VIVO card, 512 on the memory. The changes I have made, which I suspect are causing the problem, is XP and DX9.0a. Anyone else have this specific problem? I'm not going back to Win98, to much money spent. Maybe I should try going back to DX8.1? [ May 06, 2003, 10:33 PM: Message edited by: GenSplatton ]
  17. Hi mom! Anyone got a key for the lock?
  18. ASL, just wanted to say great comments. Very well thought out, very well presented, and not a touch of sarcasm. We may have hijacked the thread for a moment, but it was a civil hijacking.
  19. Interesting question. The answer for me is simple. I like to win or lose based on my use of tactics. In scenarios, the half dozen or so I have played, I found that tactics weren't necessarily what won. In fact, I lost a few despite good tactics. I found that scenarios force me to think about what the designer expects me to do rather than what do I want to do. Several times I went the non-obvious route and had success initially only to have replacements pop out righ ton top of my now woefully exposed force. Nothing to me is worse than carefully plotting and moving, haveing a succesful infantry attack against all odds, only to suddenly have two Panthers and a JadgPanther "reinforce" right on top of them. Needless to say, they are quickly wiped out and the scenario lost, not because I was outplayed, but because the designer decided thats where the reinforcements should go. To me, scenarios are a puzzle. Where does the designer expect me to go? What if I don't go there, will I pay? Will MY reinforcements pop out on the other side of the map because I didn't go where he wanted me to? I realize I am a minority, at least among senior players. But I definitely prefer QBs any day of the week over a scenario. And I do not believe that those that play scenarios are any better tacticians because of it. I find that most folks that play scenarios do so for one reason, they grew tired of MEs. Personally, I came in to the game late and have well less than 100 games, so I haven't reached that point, nor will I before CM:BB comes out. But I don't find to many people that play scenarios because they felt that the tactics required were any different/tougher. Of course, some of these may have played ladders where the top dogs only played one setting with one force all the time. I know a few of them are cropping up at another site I used to play at. I suppose that would drive some away from QBs. But personally, it would only drive me away from those individuals, not the game type.
  20. Ok, never mind. I thought this thread had a chance at some interesting points being made, but now even the thread's originator has gone in to "beat chest, prove manliness" mode. Time to move on I reckon. No need to feed the trolls.
  21. Kristian, I'd say yes. This is because I believe that TCPers probably do email games too. They just prefer TCP games. I doubt they do TCP excluseivly. So, they have PBEM games AND can complete a game totally in a few hours here and there. p.s. Plays at work? Nice to know the boss is getting his money's worth. p.s.s. Bruce, what is the chest thumping challenge supposed to prove? The question was about TCP/PBEM players in general, not just one player. Wondering what you think winning would prove. It sure won't invalidate any of the points made here in the thread.
  22. I have to ask, why would you assume someone that plays QBs all the time uses the same force mix? I despise scenarios and really like QBs. Yet I bet I have never bought the same unit mix twice. I just don't see where you extracted this conclussion/assumption from.
  23. I'm hardly "serious" about CM. I just don't like someone coming in here and telling me what my opinion should be. It's my opinion, I'll think and feel what I please. I'm not looking for anyone's approval. I didn't ask for anyone's opinion. My opinion is mine and it will be what I please. If I think it's gamey, then to me it is and that's all that matters. So, if someone does it and I think it's wrong, I won't play them again. If he has a problem with that, well, then like I said, it's his problem, not mine.
  24. Exactly Marc. And as for the comment, no need to get over anything. I think it is gamey in a QB to do it. Therefore, if someone does, I won't play them again, period. Afraid it's you that will have to get over it. And maybe, just maybe, you should take time to realize that your opinion isn't the only, and right, one. Perhaps this thread hits a nerve?
