Special Upgrade 4 Tech Tips   12/27/2016

Hi all! Now that Upgrade 4 is out and about in large quantities we have now discovered a few SNAFUs that happen out in the scary, real world that is home computing.  Fortunately the rate of problems is extremely small and so far most are easily worked around.  We've identified a few issues that have similar causes which we have clear instructions for work arounds here they are: 1.  CMRT Windows customers need to re-license their original key.  This is a result of improvements to the licensing system which CMBN, CMBS, and CMFB are already using.  To do this launch CMRT with the Upgrade and the first time enter your Engine 4 key.  Exit and then use the "Activate New Products" shortcut in your CMRT folder, then enter your Engine 3 license key.  That should do the trick. 2.  CMRT and CMBN MacOS customers have a similar situation as #2, however the "Activate New Products" is inside the Documents folder in their respective CM folders.  For CMBN you have to go through the process described above for each of your license keys.  There is no special order to follow. 3.  For CMBS and CMFB customers, you need to use the Activate New Products shortcut and enter your Upgrade 4 key.  If you launch the game and see a screen that says "LICENSE FAILURE: Base Game 4.0 is required." that is an indication you haven't yet gone through that procedure.  Provided you had a properly functioning copy before installing the Upgrade, that should be all you need to do.  If in the future you have to install from scratch on a new system you'll need to do the same procedure for both your original license key and your Upgrade 4.0 key. 4.  There's always a weird one and here it is.  A few Windows users are not getting "Activate New Products" shortcuts created during installation.  Apparently anti-virus software is preventing the installer from doing its job.  This might not be a problem right now, but it will prove to be an issue at some point in the future.  The solution is to create your own shortcut using the following steps: Disable your anti-virus software before you do anything. Go to your Desktop, right click on the Desktop itself, select NEW->SHORTCUT, use BROWSE to locate the CM EXE that you are trying to fix. The location is then written out. After it type in a single space and then paste this:

      -showui

Click NEXT and give your new Shortcut a name (doesn't matter what). Confirm that and you're done. Double click on the new Shortcut and you should be prompted to license whatever it is you need to license. At this time we have not identified any issues that have not been worked around.  Let's hope it stays that way Steve

      Forum Reorganization   10/12/2017

We've reorganized our Combat Mission Forums to reflect the fact that most of you are now running Engine 4 and that means you're all using the same basic code.  Because of that, there's no good reason to have the discussion about Combat Mission spread out over 5 separate sets of Forums.  There is now one General Discussion area with Tech Support and Scenario/Mod Tips sub forums.  The Family specific Tech Support Forums have been moved to a new CM2 Archives area and frozen in place. You might also notice we dropped the "x" from distinguishing between the first generation of CM games and the second.  The "x" was reluctantly adopted back in 2005 or so because at the time we had the original three CM games on European store shelves entitled CM1, CM2, and CM3 (CMBO, CMBB, and CMAK).  We didn't want to cause confusion so we added the "x".  Time has moved on and we have to, so the "x" is now gone from our public vocabulary as it has been from our private vocabulary for quite a while already.  Side note, Charles *NEVER* used the "x" so now we're all speaking the same language as him.  Which is important since he is the one programming them

  1. UK Ordinance Survey App

Thought people might be interested but on the App Store you can now download a free App from the UK ordinance survey that gives you free detailed contour maps of the U.K. Including detailed building outlines. Not sure how to import them into CM but I am sure you can work that out. here's the link; https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/shop/os-maps-mobile.html Peter.
  2. Inside the Russan Army.

Forgot to add the link; https://russiandefpolicy.blog/2017/08/06/an-ordinary-conflict/
  3. Inside the Russan Army.

Found this site and thought this was an article that would interest people. tends to reinforce the view of those, like me, who think that behind the arrival of things like the T-14/15 there is more wrong than right. worth reading through other articles to. You might not agree with them but they do represent an alternative source of information. Peter.
  4. Norway ditching Javelin...

CsK, "Artillery and air delivered anti-tank mines...by the bucket load." Sort of; the MRLS round has roughly the same dimensions as a Hellfire, so I'd try putting the UK Brimstone front end on an extended range MRLS round and target with MALE UAV's or the JSTARS replacement. All you need to do is avoid the longer range Russian Artillery! Peter.
  5. Russian army under equipped?

Found this when looking around and thought people would be interested. http://carnegieendowment.org/2017/05/03/assessing-russia-s-reorganized-and-rearmed-military-pub-69853 lots of interesting stuff and it does raise the possibility of three scenarios that could be the basis for an updated Black Sea around Belorussia and Poland. Peter.
  6. T-72B3M shown on vicktory day parade

Armourgunner, Thanks, nice clear close up pictures. peter
  7. Combat Mission Shanghai Pact: Ring of Fire 2021

For me the best base Scenario for this would be the internal collapse of the North as a result of a political crisis like the cultural revolution or just famine. In this scenario, as the North Imploded, all of it's neighbours would either be drawn in or face attack. Therefore it's not US v China or China v Russia, but as series of Campaigns; South; US/SK & Japanese forces in the South are attacked by NK units or need to cross the border to create a buffer zone or sieze nuclear weapons. North; Chinese and Russian forces both cross into the North to neutralise the threat to themselves and gain control of parts of the North. The Campaigns or Battles wouldn't have East v West but all the stuff would be there to create your own. Peter.
  8. Russian army under equipped?

Here's link to today's Moscow Victory Day Parade! Not much new. I don't think I've seen the Tigra with a remote turret before, it's not in BlackSea. Most seem to have a Grenade Launcher MmG combo (not sure which MMG it is) where as in game it's one or the other. about 6min in their is what I think is a command version of a BMD. Sure it's old but I can't remember seeing one and it's not in the game. The Artic Articulated is a beast, I've seen it before but not an Airdefence version. Even in a Uktainian Winter I am not sure it would make an update. you can pretty much stop after 9min unless you want to se the Russian entry for Eurovision!!!! Peter.
  9. T-72av-shafrah

Found this on the Tank Encyclopedia page and thought people would be interested. http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/modern/syria/t-72av-shafrah Peter.
  10. Spanish weapons haul!!!!

Here the video version with close up's! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/39272611 Peter.
  11. Spanish weapons haul!!!!

A bit off topic guys (and girls) but how much of this stuff can people identify? BBC report on Interpol weapons seizure Peter
  12. Never seen these beforehand!

Lethaface, Is this the TOS-1A, if so they are using it again. Part way down the article there's a Pic. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-39061811 Peter.
  13. Never seen these beforehand!

Oh Oh can we have these as well!!!!!  Mad max's Humvee!
  14. Just looking at the BBC News on the Assalt on West Mosel and saw this! Thought it was posting.Humvee Firing Rockets.
  15. Armata soon to be in service.

We already have some robo versions of Quadbikes, years back I saw a video of a university in Wales that was developing one as a robo sheep dog. We also now have robotic tractors in the works. it won't be long till we start to see driverless or optionally driven logistics vehicles doing resupply especially for things like artillery. i think a quad bike with a central mount that can be quickly changed for recon, support or antitank would be a useful and viable drone in the near term. Great for recon as small cheap and expendable. Maybe a future US squad will be a Bradley replacement with a four man team in the back each controlling one of the four armed quads that follow behind as it's swarm! Peter.
