  1. I have played CMBO and CMBB both by PBEM and over TCP/IP. Combat Mission is not an RTS or a "click fest." You are still doing the exact same thing you do when you PBEM, only you have a little less time to analyze the battlefield. That can be very challenging and exciting, but it is certainly NOT a click fest. I get the feeling a lot of folks who claim to not like the "click fest" may have not ever tried it. Give it a shot if you haven't. PBEMs are great because you can take your turn when you need to and you don't have to set a side a time that is convenient for your opponent. TCP/IP is intense and very exciting especially when it is against a friend. Anyway, to each his own. [ September 16, 2003, 08:18 AM: Message edited by: rucrazee ]
  2. Badgerdog/Vadr, You both sound like reasonable men and I see the points both of you have made. I used to play chess competively in high school and after a tournament game, I would be totally exhausted. You see I had invested a great deal of myself into the game, but the outcome and the way things should have gone was not what it should have been. I felt at times it was wasted effort and time. You guys played a long and intense game and invested a great deal of yourselves into the game and it didn't turn out the way either one of you wanted simply because you both had different expectations and attitudes about the game before you even started. If you wanted the game to be played a certain way, you needed to lay out those guidelines before you even started. If you choose to play grog style, you are ALWAYS going to have someone questioning whether something might be just a bit gamey, simply because this is still a game and it is impossible for a game to totally simulate war. Now there are folks like Fionn and others who have come up with rules to try to make things more realistic and less gamey, but there are still arguments even playing with these confines. I used to play with other folks but got tired of the fussing and have pretty much confined myself to mostly historical/semi-historical scenarios against a beefed up AI. If I ever get back into PBEM or IP play again, it will be with people who are willing to play scenarios and/or play computer generated forces and who don't argue about gamey tactics. I would rather lose a game to a gentleman, than win a game against a complainer. I hope you fellas can come to an agreement because it sounds to me like you both are missing out on a lot of fun over a simple disagreement.
  3. I guess everyone has forgotten about the code that turns your soldiers into hamsters. I am not even going to talk about the sheep thing though....
  4. You are missing the point here. The driver of the truck, Pvt Greazmunkee, was the first person in the motor pool to ever win the Medal of Honor. After racing behind enemy lines under heavy fire, he single-handedly snuck into the back of the German pillbox and took out the whole enemy crew with a tire iron.
  5. (Pardon me if I repeat myself) Gamey - 1. One who is victorous in a two player Combat Mission game. Groggy - 1. One who is woozy from one who is gamey. 2. One who should stick to history books.

  7. I have had the same problem. Combat Mission is not for everyone. I think guys who enjoy history, particularly, military history will natural gravitate towards it. Guys who like games that mentally challenge them should find it irresistable. If your friends enjoy history and mental challenges, you should have a winner. Now those that need the continuous adrenaline rush of a FPS or fast-paced RTS may not find the pace fast enough for them and/or they may not want to think that much. Since you friends enjoy Civ III which doesn't exactly break the sound barrier, I am sure they won't find this game too slow for them. No offence to BTS, but the demo may not leave them wanting more. I would sit them down at your house and hotseat with them. Explain why you are doing what you are doing and how things work perhaps with a scenario that has a little of everything in it. I am assuming you may have some military background based on your forum alias, so let them see for themselves that this is a game that involves actual military strategy. Hopefully this will help you in their conversion.
  8. Hmmm....Two armies slugging it out. Guns blazing, soldiers running for cover, tank and artillery shells are falling all around. That is what makes the heart pump. Give me chaos and confusion. Let me adapt and overcome. Let me rally my soldiers to victory or inflict great harm to the enemy when victory is just a pipedream. I wanted a tactical combat simulation and that is what I got in CM. Thank you very much BTS. I don't care for a sterile evironment where my robotic forces do exactly as they are told. That would never do as a realistic combat simulation. As far as luck goes, it is a two way street...dare I say it is probably just as likely that the player you are facing could have a run of bad luck as well. Of course egos are never a factor in ladder games. We all know that the ladder player who wins the game by luck will always do the right thing and replay the game due to the misfortune suffered by his opponent. Great game, don't go changing it
  9. I am quite sure that my ruskies were drunk during the Yelnia Stare engagement...or perhaps I was drunk...Geez, someone was drunk! Worst A.I. whooping I ever took. I can hardly wait for my full-version to arrive . Now, that will be a cause for drinking!
  10. So I guess those sky miles are out of the question
  11. There aren't many Hollywood films that are totally historically accurate. If you want history, read the book, buy documentaries (lots of them at Sam's in multi-video packs) or watch the History Channel. If you want a great semi-historical war movie, check this one out. I think it was a fantastic flick with some of the best looking combat scenes I have seen. Two thumbs up! Lighten up a little, geez.
  12. And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow; a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more: it is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing. Shakespeare
  13. Actually, that's for Combat Mission II . Have a feeling are going to be a couple years off.
