  1. I have mostly been playing as the Americans, I just switched to the Germans to give my opponents a break, and during selection of my units I do not find a 37mm antitank gun in the support units? Seems odd. Wasn't that the most common antitank gun for all armies at the beginning of WWII? Wouldn't there still be some around? (Also, why no AT Rifles? These were used a lot on the Eastern Front by the Russians, so were they not included becuase they were not used that much on the Western Front in the late war period?) Happy New Year everyone. ------------------ "You, you, and you, panic... the rest, come with me!"
  2. >>BTW, if I had only a bolt lock rifle and I was in a building with enemies, I'd just surrender. << Hmm, wasn't it Sgt York in a trench in WW1 who shot and killed something like 7 enemy soldiers with one-shot kills of his .45 cal semi-automatic pistol? I wonder if I had a .45 and all the other 4 had were two bazookas, I wonder if I could drop all 4 of them first!?! Glad I don't have to find out!
  3. I would think that a Heavy Weapons team member would carry at least a side arm, like the tank crews. In that same event, I had another sharpshooter run up to the same house while the 3 units were inside, and one of the Panzerschercks did fire at him, causing him to panic and run away. It was from only about 22meters, so I assume that the projectile arms itself in that range. It just seems silly to me that there we had 3 units laying next to each other ingoring each other but shoot at more distance targets in opposite directions. I imagine that each of the units would have heard the other unit firing in the house! Anyway, my other two pet pieves are 1) Bazookas/Panzerschercks that fire at vehicles but have no apparent effect against them (not tanks just vehicles) and 2) the choice of targets to fire on when multiple choices are available. 1) As far as I can tell, Bazookas/Panzerschercks have no effect on vehicles. I bet you if I shot my car with a bazooka, it would screw it up! 2) Too many times I have seen my tanks lined up head on with an enemy tank dueling to the death only to retarget some crew or kuebbelwaggon driving across their plane of view, yet of no real threat. I can tell you, if I had to choose to shoot back at a Tiger tank at 700m or a kubbelwaggon at 400m, I would choose the Tiger every single time, with no exceptions. What happens is this fault leads to gamey tactics, like driving your cheap vehicles and running crews around in front of enemy tanks to distract them. I would like to see the weighing of target choices cleaned up a little. But perhaps this is best presented in another string. OK, that is all my complaining for now. Otherwise it is a great game!
  4. I agree about the the desire to shoot from a distance and the self preservation aspect, however if I had a bolt action rifle and I ran into a house and found myself laying down 2 meters away from an enemy with a bazooka, I would hope that (a) I would see him, ( I could get off the first shot and © that I would get a better than a 11% chance of hitting him! I do some hunting and I have never missed anything 2 yards away (however they were not shooting back at me), not that I can think of a time I ever actually got that close! However, I would also think that many of the soldiers who carried heavy weapons (bazookas, HMG, mortars, flame throwers, etc.) may not have been able to carry a long arm (rife, SMG), but certainly they probably carried a side arm (pistol?). Perhaps combat at that range should be modeled using pistols? Regarding the ammo, my understanding is that those are ammo points and not actual bullets, and that they do go to LOW after exceeding the 10 ammo points.
  5. I read both articles awhile back. Personally, IMHO I read PC Gamer and I think Trotter is a good reviewer and a friend to war gamers. He has pointed me towards some good games and saved me some money by advising me not to buy some bad ones. And he gives good tips on web sites that have interesting hiistory, war and war gaming related topics. He feels that he offended the Veteran who was there in the first article, so he apologized in the second article. I respect the Vet's opinion, he was there participating in the actual battle and apparently had a bird's eye view of the action. However, I respect Trotter for apologizing. The point that the Veteran was trying to make was that they tried to take out the Japanese tanks, he said he watched 1 American and 2 Fillipino Scouts climb on top of the tanks and try to take them out with hand grenades, but they were all killed and the hand gernades were not powerful enough to stop the tanks. The Vet said they tried to take out the tanks but could not, so he thought Trotter's opinion that if the Americans had stopped the Japanese tanks on the beach then they could have stopped the Japanese troops on the beach was off the mark. I hope I remember it all correctly, I suggest reading both articles, they make sense together.
  6. I just fought a QB with a friend hotseat. He has a nasty habit of putting a dozen panzerschrecks in kuebbelwaggons and driving them up close and offloading them near the front and taking out my tanks. SO this time I did the same to him, accept I used sharp shooters and ran them up in front of my tanks. THe strategy worked OK accept the sharpshooters failed to shoot at the panzerschercks? In one case I had a sharpshooter run into a house and lay down RIGHT BETWEEN 2 PANZERSCHERCKS, on the same floor, not 2 meters away from either of them. They lay next to each other for several turns hiding. Then when I noticed nothing was going on, I targeted one of them, to only get an 11% chance of a hit? And then he still would not fire! I never could get him to shoot at either of them and then they both ran off? Has anyone else noticed this? BTW, thanks for all of the patches, modes, etc., this is a great game, Merry Xmas and Happy New Year! ------------------ "You, you, and you, panic... the rest, come with me!"
  7. I am a newbie, sorry to ask such basic questions. I checked out the search like you suggested, it works very well, I will use the search in the future. You are correct about the VT standing for Variable Time fused shells, there was a good description in the seconds heading I read. I also looked up HVSS, used after some of the Shermans' names, which had me curious as well, something to do with their suspension causing them not to bog so much. The W stands for Wet stored ammo, which prevented Shermans from brewing up so easily. Lots of good info, thanks again all! ------------------ "You, you, and you, panic... the rest, come with me!"
  8. Thanks coralsaw, the unit stat Db is great, it is a big help, though it would still be nice if the stats were available in the game. My conclusion re artillery is that if you can afford it the the American 4.2 inch mortars and then the 105's are the best buy. What does the VT stand for after the 105 and 155, anyone know? ------------------ "You, you, and you, panic... the rest, come with me!"
  9. Hey coralsaw, thanks! John, I agree, it was the artillery that I spent hours agonizing over. I am desiging a 5000 point, large map, email battle to play with a friend and wanted to get the best artillery possible. ------------------ "You, you, and you, panic... the rest, come with me!"
  10. I have been playing CM for the last couple months, what a great game, thanks! However, when I am designing a Quick Battle, it would be great if you all could add a feature so that a user could click on the chosen units on the right hand list and see that unit's black stats page (or right click on them in the left list). That way the gamer can choose the optimum units for the points available. I spend a lot of time making dummy battles, just so I can select and hit the Enter key over each unit and try to remember what the dang stats are when I am back making the Quick Battle. If you add this new feature (if it is not already there and I have not found it yet) in a future patch, I would really love it. If some one knows how to do this, please let me know. Also, I cannot find a list of unit stats on the web, in the manual, or in the game, does anyone have a complete list? Also, it would be nice if you could add an overview OOB table screen. Thanks again for a great game. ------------------ "You, you, and you, panic... the rest, come with me!"
