  1. If we do get PBEM (and I'm presuming we will), would there be any improvements over the current system? I was recently introduced to PBEM Helper Fast& Trusted mode and it blows away the regular method. PBEM games are 3xtimes as fast and have almost a TCP/IP feel, while retaining the advantages of PBEM. It would be nice if something similar was built into CMx2.
  2. Sgt. Jesse E. Leach of the Marines assisted Lance Cpl. Juan Valdez-Castillo, who was shot by a sniper in the town of Karma. He survived. from: Sniper adding to peril for US troops
  3. Lighten up Severin, it has'nt been beaten to death anywhere near as much as the PBEM topic.
  4. I was tempted to post this in the General Forum, but since it provides the basis of a good backstory for CMSF, here it is: White House gives helping hand to Battlefront If Syria/Iran staged a coup to setup a puppet state in Lebanon, that might justify a NATO/UN military action in Lebanon/Syria to restore the Lebanese government and/or punish Syria/Iran, maybe not in real life given the current situation, but it is certainly a plausible scenario for a game.
  5. The perfect thing to go with my "MikeyD N.A. Brit Shermans" Why does it say "Singapore" on the side of the north africa halftrack? Did the driver take a wrong turn somewhere.
  6. My first thought was that the icons replaced the bases, which I liked, but if you look at the sixth shot with the 2 US soldiers, it looks like they still have a yellow base and the soldiers in the 4th have a green bases. [ October 26, 2006, 09:15 AM: Message edited by: Sgt.Joch ]
  7. very nice, what is the purpose of the little icons over the troops? I have not seen those discussed before.
  8. My previous musings about the U.S. backing a coup were more or less in jest, but it turns out I am not the only one thinking the same thing: from Time Magazine: Washington's worst kept secret: changes are coming to Iraq policy
  9. A superb job as usual, MikeyD, Panthers can wait, allied halftracks have been sorely in need of your loving touch. Now between these and your Shermans, the allied forces finally look up to snuff.
  10. Thank you, but I have to be honest the map is not as accurate as I'd like it to be. This was pointed out to me by Perry Rowe ( a.k.a "ropey" of these boards) who visited Italy in 2004 to retrace the route his Grandfather, a soldier in the 2nd New Zealand Division, took during WW2. Perry took several excellent photos of the area around San Michelle for After the battle magazine, and he was kind enough to share them with me. For one thing, the location of La Fattoria is much closer to the village than what I have in my scenario. The village was also much smaller back in '44. I am currently working on an improved version of the scenario. In the meantime, may I recommend The Villas of Tuscany or Strada in Chianti. Note that although the posts say the scenarios are available at the Proving Grounds they've actually been moved already to the Scenario Depot II. Enjoy. </font>
  11. Take a look at "San Michelle" by Kingfish, available at TPG. I'm playing it PBEM now and it's very well done.
  12. Fascinating discussion. I do have some questions/observations: 1. I'm surprised that the basic USAF loadout consists of only MK-82 500 lbs. & MK-84 2000 lbs. bombs, although I can see the logistics advantage in using only 2 types of bombs. What about cluster bombs (i.e. CBU-87 or CBU-97), would'nt they be more effective against enemy infantry/soft targets? 2. The first article Wildman linked shows the JDAM's missing by, respectively, 150 and 200 feet, which is not only ineffective, but could put friendly forces at risk. Is that a typical occurrence in a combat situation? web page
  13. Wildman, what is your job in the USAF? you seem to know alot about this stuff.
  14. Under IP law, if you don't enforce a claim, you may be held to have abandoned or waived your right. I would guess the real reason they enforce their rights against model makers is to prevent a legal precedent from being established which could be used against them in a case where real money is involved. It's a standard legal strategy.
  15. Even with my limited knowledge of IP law, I can tell you that Lockheed Martin is stretching the enveloppe and it's doubtful that a court would uphold all of their claims. AKD brings up an important point however, these companies have the means to aggressively enforce their claims in court. A small company can't afford to contest those lawsuits, even if they win, it will cost them a small fortune in legal fees.
  16. It's an interesting question. I'm an attorney in real life (though you may not have guessed it based on my posts here ), although not in the IP field. Speaking generally, it's not clear that GD would have copyright in the image of the Stryker and therefore that BFC would have to obtain their consent to include the Stryker in CMSF. Otherwise, for example, any television or film producer would have to obtain the consent of car manufacturers for every car which appears in their program or film.(gratuitous car analogy ) Even if there was copyright, BFC may still be able to use the image without consent, based on the "fair use" doctrine, which allows the use of the copyrighted work if, generally, it has no negative impact on the owner of the copyright, which it clearly would not (unless GD thinks the Stryker blows up too easily in CMSF, which may scare off potential customers ). The safest course of action, of course, would be to get GD's consent, but following that logic, you would have to get the consent of the manufacturers of every piece of equipment used in the game, blue or red. p.s.: what is up with the CHAT?, it's been down for a week.
  17. It's not a question of being a "forum suck-up", but of revisiting previously fought forum battles. If you look back last year, you will see there was a big row over the same issue and BFC's answer was exactly the same as now, i.e. that PBEM will be in, unless there is a technical problem. I fully expect PBEM to be in. If it's not, then the game will have to stand and fall on it's remaining merits, although personally I would not still be playing CMBB/CMAK after 4 years if PBEM was not available. If you want to continue posting on an issue which is a proverbial dead horse, knock yourself out, but don't attack other forum dwellers who are not interested in mounting another fruitless charge on this issue. 18. I don't see the "twitch" crowd having an advantage in real-time play since the key to CMSF will still be the proper application of tactics. You will also have the tactical AI helping you in picking out and firing at targets. You will probably see a stretching out of game length though. A scenario that might last 15-20 turns in PBEM might take 2-3 times that long in real-time.
  19. I don't remember if this was discussed, but is WEGO still one minute turns?
  20. Canada wanted to acquire the Stryker (MGS) to replace the Leopard C2 tanks  , but none have been delivered so far, which is why the tanks are being dusted off and sent to Afghanistan. The current main IFV is the LAV III. AFAIK, Canada is not planning to acquire other Stryker variants. Any chance, we may get an OPFOR module with Iranian troops? or would that be too difficult.
