I played Passage At Wilcox a second time around and bossed it (prior knowledge of enemy positions helped!).  Breaking the Bank is so much harder but I'm persevering!

gunnersman reacted to Vinnart in The CMBN Theater is open! Post cinematic CMBN vids here.
Welcome to the grand opening of the New CMBN Theater!

I thought it would be good to start a thread similar to a screen shot thread dedicated to cinematic or just crazy cool CMBM vids now that the forum has video imbed feature. I started similar threads  at CMFI, and CMRT like each game has its own screen shot threads, so check out, and post movies in those CM theaters too.

I enjoyed this awesome vid created by JorgeMC, and thought it would be a good idea to open the CMBN Theater thread as a collection point for those to show off their video editing / directing talent, and to make everyone's movies easily found and seen. Although I do not have any video editing programs personally I can enjoy watching what others have made. Cinematic style using video editors, OR just unusual/ interesting things that happen in the game movies of any length will be the focus. Jorge's vid is a good example of what the CMBN Theater would like to show as opposed to AAR type vids with voice over commentary by the player. You don't need to be a Spielberg, if you just want to share something interesting or crazy that happened in the game as a video. So, if you have a good CMBN vids, or know of any good ones such as this one please post it for us to enjoy and find it easily, and to build our CMBN Theater collection. Please remember to give credit to the movie maker if you did not make it yourself.

Get the pop corn popping, the beer head foaming, and enjoy the shows!

Nestled deep in the bowels of the CMBN chat group is a Bulge title bone from the end of March(!), though the posters went a little crazy and got the topic locked. I think we're a bit past due for a new bone, myself and I've been dropping hints in that regard. Heck, somewhere in the schedule a whole new product site and discussion board should be popping up!

Avenger: c'mon, does ANYONE really think this is just a morale-boost jeep? Hell, they could put a loudspeaker on it pumping music, staff it with USO girls ( ), and give away free donuts and it'd probably have a better battlefield effect.

I'd rather see a Duster  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M42_Duster . In real life AND in the game.

That looks a whole lot like just the end result of driving a tank fairly fast on dirt to me.  Tanks leave some epic roostertails (and it's why you want to be the first tank in formation on drives on dirt roads, and god forbid you're doing it in the mud).

I hope that T-90 will never be able to prove itself in a real tank to tank combat, because that will mean a war against a country operating that tank.

gunnersman reacted to panzersaurkrautwerfer in XM25 CDTE supposed to be fielded late 2015
Weight.  It's the same reason the Rangers did not like the base model, and why MGL type launchers haven't got much traction.  If you've thrown body armor, rifle, 300ish rounds, water, NVGs, optics and batteries on a guy, he's already pretty weighed down.  Adding an entirely different weapon system and ammunition might make the guy simply fall over.  The weight of an M320 and rounds is not insignificant but there's a lot less than an XM25 or a larger system.

    Re: Rangerjection

The Rangers work in a way that could best be described as raid-centric.  Basically they're going to be whatever transport is mission proper (often helicopters, but in Iraq they borrowed Strykers pretty often because of how quiet and fast they could be), get booted out, and then do whatever they're there to  do  (generally seize HVTs, although hostage rescue, or high risk cache/insurgent node seizure pops up sometimes).

To that end most of the fighting they do is with the initiative, and rapid movement onto and through the objective is of the paramount.  They also tend to have priority on support assets to a rather insane degree*

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, being suddenly under fire from a covered position while on patrol is a reality.  This makes the weight trade off more attractive because while the Rangers use the grenade launcher a fair bit, they're often using it as a launcher for other things (flares, LTL, etc), and often they're attacking the enemy in his hole where he is less likely to be behind hard cover.  Some 10th Mountain platoon however is much more likely to be checking out the local villages to see if they're still living in the 13th century, and as part of that wander into an ambush from the sort of positions the XM25 smites well.

*In what I view as a giant mistake, the course you take prior to being eligible for command or senior staff positions as a Captain is shared between Armor, Infantry, and Special Forces types.  My class tragically was a mix of one former scout (me), one tanker, two international students (one from Ghana, the other from Croatia), one lost aviator (they could take our course too) seven light infantry type guys, and then a whopping seven special forces bound dudes.  One of the SOF dudes had been in the Rangers from 2LT until he showed up to the course.  And I kid you not, every scenario revolved around "well we can just use our air support for that" for him.  It's like his brain just couldn't comprehend that not everyone was followed by a platoon of Apaches, an AC-130, and an element of F-16s just waiting for the word to do something.  I was about ready to kill him when he said "well in a real war, the air force would handle this!" during our heavy mechanized defense scenario which involved holding off a enemy mechanized battalion with our assigned mech infantry team.

I think those two are suitable for a quiet Estonian night, whereas Bradleys could be heard in the Kremlin. Only slightly more acoustically stealthy than a nuclear strike. Speaking of Bradleys, here's a niftly little toy.

It's debatable, like the .45 vs 9mm debate!

The M27 IAR is a fantastic weapon system and in the offense, is more lethal and lays down more accurate suppressive fire. It tires the gunner far less in the assault and is much more ergonomic to handle and reload. In range tests, IAR gunners outlasted SAW gunners while shooting more 4-6 round bursts on target to provide suppression for their fireteams while in the assault.

It was also tested in Afghanistan with very positive reviews from the troops and commanders.

But with that said, shortcomings were recognized. It simply cannot provide sustained MG-like suppression like the M249 SAW can. This is fully acknowledged and is the reason why every company still has 9 M249s as T/E equipment to be employed as the company commander sees fit. That has essentially evolved to 3 M27 IARs and one M249 SAW per squad.

It may also be a secret plot by the Corps to quietly move away from the M16/M4 to a rifle that is basically a souped up HK416. If I was Commandant for a day, I'd do this immediately!

gunnersman reacted to womble in Best use of combat engineers
Engineers can spot minefields faster than ordinary troops if they're left immediately adjacent to them for a little while; they won't see a minefield they've entered any quicker than the mines will "see" them...

Best use for engineers is changing the battlefield. Blowing tunnels through buildings, knocking down walls to allow you to bypass buildings, or generate firing opportunities. They're a bit like a reverse smoke screen... If you have plenty of demo charges, they make clearing enemy out of buildings a lot easier. Any blank wall, including party walls is a huge vulnerability for the defenders.

Smoke screens. BMP mounted smokes were designed for offensive use giving you 50-80m of breathing space with 3D6M/3D17 smoke grenades protecting form thermal and visual detection.

Yep.  Depends on the unit but I made my guys do one if they were stopped for more than a few minutes.  Longer you're in place, the more complex the range cards get (and transform into platoon fire plans)

gunnersman reacted to panzersaurkrautwerfer in pnzrldr, request your professional opinion, please. Is a 4 second kill doable?
Panzer Crewman is pretty awesome too.  In terms of the A1 vs A2, depends on your model, but the decrease in engagement times results from the fact you've basically got two sets of GPS (Gunner's Primary Sights) in action with the CITV running.  Extra bonus at least in gunnery is the driver's thermal optics mean he can spot at least the obvious frontal targets (although if your driver is a lowspeed it's not much help).

I snagged the penetrator because some of my Platoon Sergeants were going to go dunnage hunting on range maintenance day, and they asked if they could borrow the grill off of my HMMWV's fan to use as a sift.  I told them they could, but jokingly "to bring me back something pretty"

So yeah they brought back a full set of sabot petals, the penetrator, the "cup" from a canister round and about a half dozen pellets.  Good guys.

    Re: Battlesight

Battlesight for sabot is 1200 meters.  Think HEAT is 850?  Basically it's the max range at which no range input is required for the round to strike the target.  Lead is also pretty minimal at that range.  The 600 meters or so is, as someone pointed out a knife fight in a telephone booth.

    Re: Fire command

This too.  Technically you're always supposed to get an "up" from the loader, which lets you know he's clear of the gun and all safeties are off.  Conversely if it's the first round of the engagement and you're leaving cover, it's likely the loader is clear anyway.
