  1. Hi Moon

I am on Windows 8 and have tried with Firefox and Chrome, each time it bombs out.

    Again trying with Firefox.

As I said, the problem is most likely on the client side, judging from past experience with support so far. Keep in mind that these are pretty downloads, so without a fast and reliable connection, all sorts of things can go wrong that are entirely unrelated to the host, and that we really can't do anything about.

I would suggest NOT using any download managers but going for straight browser downloads if you have a good connection. I saw some issues related to some Chrome download manager/plugin the other day.

  2. hello chaps

i am getting two digital copies of the game but need different keys. Is there a way of doing this during the ordering process? I have sent a help ticket off but the techies are offline at the moment.

    cheers

You did the right thing by contacting helpdesk. We'll get you a second key (and the one you have will have the activation count reduced).

  3. Hi daisy,

on the Mac, just use plain Safari. I've found that to be the most reliable. On the PC, I just use the regular Firefox browser without plugins, and never had any issues.

The recommendation to use download managers is actually more of a legacy thing for older game downloads. We will remove that recommendation entirely in the near future, as simple browser downloads work best.

For the record, our new partner is hosting the downloads on a major Amazon cloud backbone. There are the occasional glitches associated with that, but overall it's very stable, and most problems I've seen so far were related to the client side (e.g. Norton 360 blocking download, connectivity issues downstream, and so forth).

  4. Chris has taken over the main manual writing duties from me a while ago and has been improving on the result steadily, and all around, but especially for new player tutorials and some of the more fuzzy areas like C2. Kudos indeed. You can't in fact even imagine what a tough job putting together a good relevant manual is for a game that's changing up to the very last minute before release... and after.

  5. Thank you for posting the Manual. However, the 2 pages per viewing page is extremely hard to read on a tablet or small laptop computer. Will you please consider reformatting the Manual so that it is 1 to 1? Thank you.

The game itself includes a different PDF version of the manual which will allow printing, and also allows 1 to 1 page view. And then of course there is the printed spiral-bound manual :) All preorders will get two of these plus as many other folks as stock will last (which probably isn't very long after preorders end I would guess).

  6. Strategic Command World War Two Global Conflict GOLD BUNDLE contains both the brand new expansion as well as the original SC WWII Global Conflict game of grand strategy and global world dominance in the 1940's in one attractive money-saving package!

In other words, it contains the base game, and the GOLD expansion.

  7. Hi schascha,

the number of activations has nothing to do with the delivery method. It's the same whether you purchase a download, mail delivery, or download&mail. Each key gives you 4 activations out of the box, in line with our End User License Agreement, which allows you to have 2 concurrent activations per PC, and it gives you 2 additional ones if you need to transfers PCs etc. After that, you are eligible for 1 additional activation per year per key. You get those by contacting us at www.battlefront.com/helpdesk. In reality, we grant additional activations way more often than that if needed, e.g. if you have a PC meltdown and what not. In short, you will never run out of activations (and incidentally, downloads are unlimited now, too).

You do not need the Gold expansion to play AoD. You only need the base game.

  8. We don't do sales often, in general, not just Christmas. I remember less than a handful of sales in the past 6-7 years. If we do them, it's usually for a very specific business purpose.

In my personal opinion (which does not necessarily reflect that of Battlefront as a whole), sales are good short term boosts for retailers with an unlimited supply of products but they are not good in the long run for the developer. As such, they are, in the long run, not good for the customer either, and if you look around and wonder where all the great wargames and wargaming companies are these days (heck, make that "gaming"), sales may be why. No, make that SALES!!!!!

    Way over-hyped.

That isn't to say that over-priced is the way to go, either, and if we were, we'd be making lots of SALES!!!!, too ;)

  9. As someone going through the clean install process right now: I'm realising how much I've become accustomed to one-click installers. Given that Battlefront's orientated itself entirely around a modular sales strategy I'll be very disappointed if the next wave of games hasn't had some work put into making this end of things more user friendly.

Actually, the newer games (CMBN and CMFI) use a slightly different - and easier - strategy as of 2.10 that simplifies the process, because it is not necessary to activate the modules step by step, but rather you can install everything and then activate as the last step and in any order by bringing up the activation interface. CMSF is still using the older eLicense system that we do not use anymore for the newer titles.

We have also already provided a combined installer for the Mac for CMSF, and we are working on updating the full version installer for CMSF PC (as well as CMBN and CMFI) to the latest version, as well. Believe it or not, it is a surprisingly large amount of work to do this, and there is always a shortage on resources. Especially, since as long as the game is still in flux with more patches planned, it is quickly superseded by newer patches, which then means all the work has to be done again. This isn't the case for CMSF any more, though, so we should have updated installers in the near future. And, we will also simplify CMBN and CMFI tremendously (everyone who purchased or purchases now will benefit from the new installers).

Also, we are working on a special tool that will make reinstalling, patching etc. a LOT easier. But shshs, it's a secret still.

Keep in mind though that since we are selling modules separately, there will always be some additional "work" in installing. It's inherent in the modules concept. The tool I mentioned above that doesn't exist and I will deny every mention of it and people in black helicopters will come to your house if you do should take the sting out of that as well, though.

  10. Knowledgebase to the rescue!

    CMSF reinstallation

If you have a CMSF module, then you do not need your base game license key (ever again). That's because when you activate a module with a module license key, the base game is activated automatically as well. There is no need to license the base game separately if you intend to install a module with it. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users we recommend running the installers by right-clicking and selecting "Run as administrator" from the popup menu. The default directory for Battlefront versions is usually '\Program Files\Battlefront\Combat Mission Shock Force' for 32-bit versions of Windows and '\Program Files (x86)\Battlefront\Combat Mission Shock Force' for 64-bit versions of Windows. Please double-check where you install the game and ensure that modules and patches install to the appropriate directory. A new folder/directory in the game's actual directory would be an incorrect location to install a patch to. Most patches will replace the main game executable and you should get confirmation that the patch installed properly by looking for this version number at the bottom, middle of the main menu screen.

Here is the correct way to reinstall CMSF and its modules (as of patch v. 1.32):

    • Install CMSF, do NOT license it if it is a Battlefront version.
    • Install the v. 1.10 patch for your distribution (Battlefront or Paradox). This step is sometimes not needed if you have the Marines module, but bundles that include the Marines module may not have all of the necessary files that are part of the v. 1.10 patch.
    • If you have the Marines module, install it now.
    • If you have the Marines module, launch CMSF and use the Marines license key to activate (this activates both CMSF and the Marines module).
    • If you have the British Forces module, install it now.
    • If you have the British Forces module, launch CMSF and use the British Forces license key to activate it now.
    • Install the v. 1.21 patch. Make sure to make the correct selections for the modules you have. Making an incorrect selection will result in modules disappearing or license key requests for modules you do not have. If you run into this problem reinstall the v. 1.21 patch again and make the correct selections. You must install the v. 1.21 patch BEFORE installing the NATO module.
    • If you have the NATO module, install it now.
    • If you have the NATO module, launch CMSF and use the NATO license key to activate it now.
    • Install the v. 1.31 patch. Make sure to make the correct selections for the modules you have. Making an incorrect selection will result in modules disappearing or license key requests for modules you do not have. If you run into this problem reinstall the v. 1.31 patch again and make the correct selections.
    • Install the v. 1.32 patch. Make sure to make the correct selections for the modules you have. Making an incorrect selection will result in modules disappearing or license key requests for modules you do not have. If you run into this problem reinstall the v. 1.32 patch again and make the correct selections.

  11. Yeah when's the christmas sale start here? Matrixgames has already started theirs and Slitherine too.

    Heh, that's the same company.

We don't do sales often. The last christmas sale we had is, uh, so far back I can't really remember when we had one. I don't think we're planning one this year either. Our games are great values at the price they are ;)

If you are planning to purchase multiple copies, drop us a line at www.battlefront.com/helpdesk and we can get you a little volume discount. And of course you'll already save a lot on shipping if you order more than one item for "mail" or "mail&download" delivery.
