    Update on Engine 4 patches

Another view is to flip this around and ask why wouldn't they have been working on the patch this whole time? It's been 2 years and 3 months now since they broke some pretty fundamental parts of their own game -- broken to the point that many people can barely enjoy the typical stock scenario. And not just one title broken, but all of them. When the issues with v4 were first brought to light, I would have never believed that it'd still be almost literally years before we saw them fixed. Perhaps Battlefront needs to start actually paying more testers and content creators, in order to get things moving along, instead of relying on the generosity of so many volunteers? I've defended Battlefront and heaped praise on the game many times over the past 4 to 5 years, but at some point a customer's patience and good will just gets used up. "Niche market" is no excuse for a fix to the underlying game engine to have taken this long.

When a patch is 2 years in the making I start to question their ability to deliver, regardless of how long they take.

MINUTE 16 This turn was exciting. To avoid losing my halftrack, I have ordered it to advance a little while I am sending my tank into a search and destroy mission against this armored car. The armored car is indeed trying to destroy some of my men near the halftrack. But, the cavalry arrives... And the unthinkable happens. The Stug III is spotted surely also looking after the halftrack. Meanwhile, one of my squad in the woods on my right wing is firing with a bazooka against the armored car. I think that is what we call a near miss. 😕 Luckily for me, my Sherman has seen the Stug III and is aiming at it. Too late, the Stug III is firing... 😨 But, a micro second later, my Sherman also fires. The two shells are under the green arrow. Boom!!! Boom!!! Stalemate... The Stug III is out of order as well as my lonely Sherman... Exciting indeed 😅

Okay, I think I figured why it was changing AKM's. You need to delete ak-74.bmp. This is actually the texture for the AKM.... The only issue left now is that the M16 swap messes up the tubular stock of the other AK's but that's a minor issue, barely noticeable. There are perhaps other small fixes needed but this is going to help a lot. I wasn't even going to do any weapon swapping if I had to do this alone. But this looks much better. Maybe I'll do an early and a late ANA version. The early one with only woodland camo and AK's. And the late version with M16's and a mix of woodland and spec4ce forest.

What the hell is 'snak'? I understand that English is a living language which means that it continues to evolve, but I am far from convinced that its evolution should be in the hands of idiots. Not that I mean to say that BG is an idiot; in most things he has been reasonably sensible. But whoever was responsible for this particular barbarism should be locked up without access to the internet and fed only bread and water until he or she has come face to face with the error of his or her ways. Arty I could live without but in the game I was playing troops jumped out of a trench when being fired on by machine guns - and they were not broken or panicking. Machine guns in general is something that is hard to play a CM game without.

    Update on Engine 4 patches

When they are ready, they will be out is the usual way to look at things. I hate waiting as much or more than the next guy. It has gotten easier as I have grown older but I still hate it. I drive way too many extra kms on backroads and through small towns to avoid waiting in traffic jams. I'll waste an afternoon driving to pick up something myself rather than wait the three or four days it would take the store to ship it to me. I would rather do almost anything than have to wait. So instead of waiting for the patch to come out and not play the game, I play the game. Find an opponent who will agree to play with rules limiting the amount of off map arty and play a pbem match with them. For that matter, play a pbem match and both of you take large quantities of off map arty and blast each other to pieces. The game will treat your troops and his the same. Unless of course you decide to make a DAR and then you can count on the game intentionally screwing with just your side. Right @RockinHarry? 😁 At this point, I would challenge anyone who is impatiently waiting like me to make a 1.5 km x 1.5 km quick battle map based on the area surrounding your house. Use whichever game family you like to play the most. Put your house right in the center of the map and try as hard as you can to get it to look as close to your neighborhood as possible. Make it an attack battle with the player as the attacking force. Pick units for both sides that seem appropriate for what your map looks like. If the using the AI editor is easy for you, setup an active defense and multiple AI plans. If not, take your time and setup the defenders as if you were playing a multiplayer game. Pick your victory conditions, assign the points, write up a quick briefing and your done. A simple scenario, ready to play. If everyone who can't wait for the patch makes a simple scenario like this, think of all the new content available to play on once the patch finally does comes out!

maybe a good time for revival with the ani mods currently beeing tested in H2H. Final evaluations are to follow in next weeks coming I think. To something different: another animation sequence I personally find somewhat...errm....too sportingly.. is the "jump" (fences, walls, trenches) animation sequence. Considering usual combat loads and such I could imagine something more appropiate maybe. I´m just about testing the "hunt level short" sequence as substitute for "jump" and while also not that perfect I find it somewhat more convincing. What do you think? Before I upload anything you can try yourselves. Unbrz "Normandy V100a" then in "a/animations/kar98" take "kar98k-hunt-level-short.ani" and put it into "data/z". Rename this to "kar98k-jump.ani". Done.

There is an interesting paper I read a long time ago called Increasing Small Arms Lethality in Afghanistan: Taking Back the Infantry Half-Kilometer, by US Army Maj. Thomas Ehrhart. https://apps.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a512331.pdf You might find it interesting since it goes into a lot of detail about modern infantry doctrine and weapons. It argued that U.S. infantry have been very under-powered for the type of fighting they were doing in Afghanistan. Back in the early 20th century, the U.S. went into WW1 with a professional army and a doctrine emphasizing marksmanship and accurate volleys of long-distance rifle fire. They used bigger rifles and bullets that could hit things pretty effectively out to 500m, and be very lethal even at 1000m. Going into WW2, Korea and then Vietnam, the U.S. had gotten used to dealing with large conscript armies on a very different type of battlefield, and doctrine shifted away from marksmanship and moved toward fire and maneuver tactics, with the emphasis on putting out a high volume of suppressive fire at shorter distances. Current U.S. equipment, training, and doctrine are optimized for fighting on level terrain at ranges less than 300m. According to that paper, "Not only is the current U.S. infantryman less equipped to kill his enemy than his World War I predecessor, he is carrying far more weight than him." The 5.56 ammo used these days is less lethal and less effective at long range. In Afghanistan, the Taliban liked to park themselves up on mountaintops and just plink away at distant U.S. infantry using heavy machine guns (like the DShK with those giant 12.7x108mm bullets) and mortars, and the U.S. infantry down in the valleys would not be able to put down effective return fire. The heavily-laden U.S. infantry could not effectively maneuver in the rugged terrain and high altitudes, and would often have to sit there helplessly until they either pulled out or called in big guns and air support. CM seems to simulate this kind of thing pretty well. Weapon ballistics are what these games do best IMO. Sometimes I'm surprised at how under-powered my infantry is and I find myself relying very heavily on my vehicles and big guns in order to do anything. I remember playing many Shock Force scenarios where my U.S. infantry are getting sniped away or getting hit by DShK fire at long range and my infantry are helpless to do anything about it. Or maybe I'll pour thousands of rounds of 5.56 ammo into a building only to realize that it had little effect. I don't know much at all about British or the other NATO forces though, but they seem to be pretty similar to the U.S. I haven't played with the other Western forces very much. At least with the U.S, their vehicles and artillery and air support is their biggest asset. The infantry is there to be bodyguards and scouts for their vehicles. Once the infantry spots something, the vehicles roll up and destroy it. With the Syrians, it seems their best tactics are to either ambush the enemy at close range, or snipe and harass them at long range and then relocate before they can call in those big guns. Getting into an extended firefight at medium range is what Western forces are best at. They carry loads of ammo and their good morale and high volume of fire means they will always get fire superiority eventually and win. With the Syrians (especially the uncons/insurgents), running out of ammo can be a big concern, so you want to either harass and ambush or hit the enemy as hard as you can as quickly as possible with everything you have, to try and overrun their positions.

    Update on Engine 4 patches

I be pretty concerned if they had been working on the patch all that time, over 2 years and you really think they been working on it all that time. They been working on things and you know what they are, They gave us CMSF2, with said patch (Why , because that is where they decided to put their focus, why. Because another group of people have been asking for that for many years now also. ) Someone wins, someone loses. So if you play that, you see what will be coming when they get it finished. Steve said, the updating of the campaigns for CMSF2 and the patches were their next priority. So I would suspect the next thing we see will likely be them. (Just a little longer folks)

MINUTE 15 The halftrack starts an area fire on the suspected enemy position. 🤗 It reveals that some people are fleeing. 🎅 The German on my right wing are too far away to provide any kind of support. The 10,5cm round of the turn... No casualty this time. I really think this is one harass mission. And a little surprise, a recon armored car is showing up. And it looks like it is after my halftrack... 😨 Strangely enough, I am observing more suppressive fire than expected and I realize my tank is also after something. Ouch! One of my men was a little too exposed and is hit. Ah and a smoke potting round, my assault is near.

    Minefield Mayhem....

I’m not an explosives expert so if someone is more knowledgeable behind the physics wants to chime in please do, but my understanding is because the mines are placed on the pavement, the explosion just scatters them around and clutters the area with debris making the mines harder to spot. The resulting state of the road is less of a tactical issue 😄

If I could make a small amendment to (my bold) this excellent suggestion ... "At this point, I would challenge anyone who is impatiently waiting like me to make a 1.5 km x 1.5 km quick battle map based on the area surrounding your mother-in-law's house, take large quantities of off map arty and blast it to pieces."

    Update on Engine 4 patches

This is a bit ironic since we're waiting for a patch to fix problems introduced in a patch... There's a middle ground between not testing things at all and then on the other hand testing things for more than two years. Also, nobody is demanding they release a flawed patch. But maybe releasing the patch that's has been done for a while and already is in CMSF2 would be nice.

On rare occasions, tankers have seen a main gun projectile coming right at their tank, in the form of a rapidly growing dot. Fairly sure it was in Crisp's Brazen Chariots, and I believe I've seen at least one other such mention. Have a friend who did two tours in the Marines in Iraq and was manning a guard tower. Said he saw a mortar round come right through the camouflage net and past his face, with the munition apparently landing in a ravine or something so that he wasn't hit directly or indirectly when it blew up. Altogether too exciting for my tastes, but much better than what could easily have happened! Regards, John Kettler

MINUTE 14 Crossing the road again to reach the house on the left of the screen. This time I am using a Fast command. And, suddenly, one 10,5cm shell drops. Three casualties but the one in the red circle is a little hard to believe. I have replayed the sequence but this is indeed the shrapnel. 😕 In the wood on my left wing, my men are watching while my halftrack is arriving. Hope it will surprise a little the Germans next turn.

Turn 6 Execution 1 Coy (A) Beeing under heavy fire from enemy mortars and AC´s, parts of 1st squad figured the outside position at Sextons House untenable and thus run. WIA Staff Sergeant Kunick got to surrender to his fate... (A) 3rd squad fared no better. Seeking cover behind that raised road, just one man made it back. 1. Plt is now almost wiped out. A handful of men still try to hold at Sextons House. (between A and B) 1. Plt leader 251/17 discovered enemy AC´s moving from (CR) and quickly switched to reverse. But too late. Just one second before the turns end it caught an enemy shell. This time not that lucky, but.... (to be continued) (B) 2. Plt successfully extracted from (B) and now ready for a new task. (B) 1st squad of 3. Plt succeeded in its recon mission. This route is not safe! Despite moving in the shadows, the enemy (near CR) took notice and an AC´s shell wiped half the squads men out. I could have split off a recon team first, but anyway it´s a stupid move. Oh well... Between (A) and (B): "Panzerschreck nach Vorne!" (Panzerschreck forward!). Let´s see if those guys get an aim on that nasty enemy AC´s. 2 Coy (C) Finally something to shoot at in Coy sector. From a forward position just reached, a 3. Plt´s team takes invisible enemies under fire. The picture becomes clearer... ...while more of 3. Plt´s men about to secure buildings near the crest. (C) (crest near C) The Bn HQ´s group sniper team got spotted and the enemy let them know. That was close. Just some scratches from shrapnel. High time to change position... A recon team of 1. Plt on the way towards (E). Still no sight of the enemy.... East of the Laundry: "Maj. Berger here. Request mortar fire support mission at coordinates...." Turn 6 progress

BletchleyGeek, Great vid, and it illustrates some of the points I made in another post regarding projectiles deflecting, prematurely detonating, etc. SlowMotion (but really for those who've only ever known CMx2), BTS had tanks continuing to move after killed but not K-Killed way back in CMBO. It was one of those things which sold me on the game when it was only in Beta Demo. My StuG III acquired, tracked, fired upon (gun recoiled) and nailed a crossing Sherman. It rolled I forget how many tank lengths before stopping. All this was on a screen model smaller than Micro Armour™! Regards, John Kettler

    Minefield Mayhem....

Well somebody is a real pleasant fellow. Yes is is true that I might have missed the point a bit since yes english is indeed not my native language and also because every time there is a talk on the forum about infantry engineers breaching minefields, wich you definitely can not do in CM games, since marking is not breaching in sense of clearing a mineless lane through the damn thing, there is immediately somebody popping up with the "Its not in scope of CM something something.." like literally every freaking time. Whole discussion on whether it might be reasonable to add the ability for engineers to breach minefields is just brushed aside without any consideration if the popular perception about the issue might actually be wrong. So yeah, I might be tad bit frustrated about the whole thing. But there is still no excuse to accept such immature and completely insulting behaviour as your reply. Is this the sort of thing we want to see here on this forum? Last word on the mine issue: I am actually quite optimistic that we will eventually get at least mine clearing vehicles to both modern CM titles. And that is enough for me. -H1nd
